The paving of gravel roads with an average daily traffic (ADT) over 15 is a least cost method for reducing suspended particulate In the air in Seattle. It is also a good business investment when the ADT exceeds 100. Clean roads, gutters, and parking lots may reduce or eliminate Seattle’s most serious environmental constraint on economic development. In a study done in Seattle’s Duwamish Valley the impact of road dust on air quality was measured by obtaining dust emission factors for vehicles traveling at 10, 20, and 30 mph on gravel as well as dusty paved roads. A University of Washington Mark II Cascade Impactor was mounted on a trailer and towed behind a car to determine the concentration and size distribution of this dust. It was found that each vehicle mile at 20 mph on unpaved roads contributed 7.0 Ib of dust to the air, 1.9 Ib consisting of particles smaller than 10 microns in diameter and 0.24 Ib below 2 microns. Three to eight percent by weight of this respirable dust was free silica, which is potentially toxic. The quantity of dust generated varies as an exponent of the speed. The concentrations of dust found in the air near a dry gravel road with an ADT of 250 reached 584 μg/m3 for an 8 hr work day. A 24 hr suspended particulate reading of 463 μg/m3 total and 3.83 μg/m3 free silica was found beside a dusty paved road with an ADT of 18,000. Nineteen miles of gravel roads and 110 miles of dusty paved roads contributed 2700 tons/year of particulate, of which 700 tons were below 10 microns. Paving or oiling such roads will produce benefits of $3,881,000 yearly in household cleaning, health care, sewer, vehicle operation, and road maintenance costs as well as an increase in property values. Abstract Air quality data collected in the California Regional PM10/PM2.5 Air Quality Study (CRPAQS) are analyzed to qualitatively assess the processes affecting secondary aerosol formation in the San Joaquin Valley (SJV). This region experiences some of the highest fine particulate matter (PM2.5) mass concentrations in California (≤188 μg/m3 24-hr average), and secondary aerosol components (as a group) frequently constitute over half of the fine aerosol mass in winter. The analyses are based on 15 days of high-frequency filter and canister measurements and several months of wintertime continuous gas and aerosol measurements. The phase-partitioning of nitrogen oxide (NOx)-related nitrogen species and carbonaceous species shows that concentrations of gaseous precursor species are far more abundant than measured secondary aerosol nitrate or estimated secondary organic aerosols. Comparisons of ammonia and nitric acid concentrations indicate that ammonium nitrate formation is limited by the availability of nitric acid rather than ammonia. Time-resolved aerosol nitrate data collected at the surface and on a 90-m tower suggest that both the daytime and nighttime nitric acid formation pathways are active, and entrainment of aerosol nitrate formed aloft at night may explain the spatial homogeneity of nitrate in the SJV. NOx and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions plus background O3 levels are expected to determine NOx oxidation and nitric acid production rates, which currently control the ammonium nitrate levels in the SJV. Secondary organic aerosol formation is significant in winter, especially in the Fresno urban area. The cost of fishing and the income earned by fishers using small and large traps, gill nets, beach seines, hand lines, and spearguns were assessed in the multigear fishery of southern Kenya to establish a financial rationale for fishing gear use. Direct observations and key-informant interviews with fish leaders and boat captains were used to gather data on fish catch, cost of fishing gear, boats, and the price of fish. Among the fishing gear used, spearguns had the lowest monthly cost (USD 1 mo(-1)) while big traps had the highest (USD 13 mo(-1)). Income was highest among capital cost beach seine fishers (USD 183 mo(-1)) and lowest among noncapital cost beach seine fishers (USD 20 mo(-1)). There was a direct positive correlation between income earned and profitability of gear. Correlation of the financial measure for each gear to four categories of damage to fish and habitats showed that low cost fishing gear were associated with the highest environmental damage indicating a trade-off between cost of gear and environmental health. 相似文献

In monogamous species, females often choose between males according to the quality of the territories they defend, but the
extent to which females themselves contribute to territory defence is frequently underestimated. Here we test for differences
in male and female roles during paired scent-marking bouts, a key component of territorial defence, in a monogamous antelope.
In two populations (Kenya, Zimbabwe) of klipspringer, Oreotragus oreotragus, both males and females usually scent-marked at the same site, but there were significant differences between sexes in terms
of investment within bouts. Females initiated most bouts, thus dictating the marking strategy of the pair. Males initiated
relatively few bouts, but deposited more scent marks per bout than females and were usually the last to scent-mark before
leaving the site; they marked on the same branches as the female and thus overmarked her scent. Both sexes deposited more
marks during paired than solo visits. Immediately preceding and following scent-marking bouts, males approached females and
females left males more often than expected. Female scent-marking rates were higher when they were receptive than at other
times, and this increase was matched by elevated marking rates of males. Females may increase marking rates when they are
receptive in order to test the quality of their mate or to incite male competition. However, these ideas are unlikely to explain
female scent-marking behaviour outside the mating season, which appears to be related primarily to territorial defence. We
suggest that these differences in investment in scent-marking bouts are consistent with predictions that females may be autonomously
territorial and that overmarking of female scent by males is a form of mate-guarding.

Near-roadway ambient black carbon (BC) and carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations were measured at two schools adjacent to a freeway and at an urban background school 2 km from the freeway to determine the change in concentrations attributable to vehicle emissions after the three-lane expansion of U.S. Highway 95 (US 95) in Las Vegas, Nevada. Between summer 2007 and summer 2008, average weekday small-vehicle volume increased by 40% ± 2% (standard error). Average weekday large-vehicle volume decreased by 17% ± 5%, due to a downturn in the economy and an associated decline in goods movement. Average vehicle speed increased from 58 to 69 mph, a 16% ± 1% increase. The authors compared BC and CO concentrations in summer 2007 with those in summer 2008 to understand what effect the expansion of the freeway may have had on ambient concentrations: BC and CO were measured 17 m north of the freeway sound wall, CO was measured 20 m south of the sound wall, and BC was measured at an urban background site 2 km south of the freeway. Between summer 2007 and summer 2008, median BC decreased at the near-road site by 40% ± 2% and also decreased at the urban background site by 24% ± 4%, suggesting that much of the change was due to decreases in emissions throughout Las Vegas, rather than only on US 95. CO concentrations decreased by 14% ± 2% and 10% ± 3% at the two near-road sites. The decrease in BC concentrations after the expansion is likely due to the decrease in medium- and heavy-duty-vehicle traffic resulting from the economic recession. The decrease in CO concentrations may be a result of improved traffic flow, despite the increase in light-duty-vehicle traffic.
ImplicationsMonitoring of BC and CO at near-road locations in Las Vegas demonstrated the impacts of changes in traffic volume and vehicle speed on near-road concentrations. However, urban-scale declines in concentrations were larger than near-road changes due to the impacts of the economic recession that occurred contemporaneously with the freeway expansion. 相似文献

When a mining company selects a site for development, the company begins a dialogue with the local community about receiving the necessary approvals for the mining permits. The dialogue focuses on how well the company can use science and technology to manage risk to the local environment, and on how much economic benefit will be gained by the local community for accepting the risk. A useful approach to better understand how the debate affects the outcome of the permitting effort is to use the method of “discourse communities and analysis”. This paper analyzes two efforts by Kennecott (Rio Tinto) and one by Exxon to develop base metal mine sites in the Upper Midwest of the USA. As the three case studies show, the local pro- and anti-mining discourse community members will not be changing their basic positions as the permitting of a new mine is debated. Accordingly, both communities are trying to convince undecided stakeholders rather than talking to each other. Both sides are using ever more sophisticated media methods to communicate their message to the undecided residents of the community. Ragwort (Senecio jacobaea and S. aquaticus) causes major losses to agricultural revenue and induces livestock morbidity throughout parts of Europe, North America, and
Australasia. The introduction of legislation in the U.K. and Australia has meant that landowners can be prosecuted if the
plant spreads to adjacent land, which has led to an increase in activities attempting to control these species. Commonly used
interventions include natural enemies, herbicide applications, manual and mechanical removal. Through the use of explicit
systematic methodology involving comprehensive searches and detailed inclusion criteria, data from primary research are collated
for each type of intervention. Meta-analyses show that 2,4-D, Asulam, Clopyralid, and MCPA are effective at reducing ragwort
densities. However, when the datasets were analysed for their effectiveness against individual species, 2,4-D and MCPA were
only effective against S. jacobaea, while Asulam was only effective against S. aquaticus. Natural enemies Longitarsus jacobaeae and a combination of L. jacobaeae and Tyria jacobaeae appear to have the potential to reduce S. jacobaea densities. Only applying T. jacobaeae does not appear to significantly reduce S. jacobaea densities, but does reduce the number of capitula per plant, seeds per capitula, viability of seeds, and dry weight of the
plants. There is insufficient experimental evidence available to assess other interventions such as manual or mechanical removal.
Further research into these types of interventions is recommended, as well as more detailed reporting of site characteristics
and experimental design to allow full investigation of each intervention to explain possible reasons for variations in their

Goal, Scope and Background
Some anthropogenic pollutants posses the capacity to disrupt endogenous control of developmental and reproductive processes
in aquatic biota by activating estrogen receptors. Many anthropogenic estrogen receptor agonists (ERAs) are hydrophobic and
will therefore readily partition into the abiotic organic carbon phases present in natural waters. This partitioning process
effectively reduces the proportion of ERAs readily available for bioconcentration by aquatic biota. Results from some studies
have suggested that for many aquatic species, bioconcentration of the freely-dissolved fraction may be the principal route
of uptake for hydrophobic pollutants with logarithm n-octanol/water partition coefficient (log Kow) values less than approximately
6.0, which includes the majority of known anthropogenic ERAs. The detection and identification of freely-dissolved readily
bioconcentratable ERAs is therefore an important aspect of exposure and risk assessment. However, most studies use conventional
techniques to sample total ERA concentrations and in doing so frequently fail to account for bioconcentration of the freely-dissolved
fraction. The aim of the current study was to couple the biomimetic sampling properties of semipermeable membrane devices
(SPMDs) to a bioassay-directed chemical analysis (BDCA) scheme for the detection and identification of readily bioconcentratable
ERAs in surface waters.
Methods
SPMDs were constructed and deployed at a number of sites in Germany and the UK. Following the dialytic recovery of target
compounds and size exclusion chromatographic clean-up, SPMD samples were fractionated using a reverse-phase HPLC method calibrated
to provide an estimation of target analyte log Kow. A portion of each HPLC fraction was then subjected to the yeast estrogen
screen (YES) to determine estrogenic potential. Results were plotted in the form of 'estrograms' which displayed profiles
of estrogenic potential as a function of HPLC retention time (i.e. hydrophobicity) for each of the samples. Where significant
activity was elicited in the YES, the remaining portion of the respective active fraction was subjected to GC-MS analysis
in an attempt to identify the ERAs present.
Results and Discussion
Estrograms from each of the field samples showed that readily bioconcentratable ERAs were present at each of the sampling
sites. Estimated log Kow values for the various active fractions ranged from 1.92 to 8.63. For some samples, estrogenic potential
was associated with a relatively narrow range of log Kow values whilst in others estrogenic potential was more widely distributed
across the respective estrograms. ERAs identified in active fractions included some benzophenones, various nonylphenol isomers,
benzyl butyl phthalate, dehydroabietic acid, sitosterol, 3-(4-methylbenzylidine)camphor (4-MBC) and 6-acetyl-1,1,2,4,4,7-hexamethyltetralin
(AHTN). Other tentatively identified compounds which may have contributed to the observed YES activity included various polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their alkylated derivatives, methylated benzylphenols, various alkylphenols and dialkylphenols.
However, potential ERAs present in some active fractions remain unidentified.
Conclusions and Outlook
Our results show that SPMD-YES-based BDCA can be used to detect and identify readily bioconcentratable ERAs in surface waters.
As such, this biomimetic approach can be employed as an alternative to conventional methodologies to provide investigators
with a more environmentally relevant insight into the distribution and identity of ERAs in surface waters. The use of alternative
bioassays also has the potential to expand SPMD-based BDCA to include a wide range of toxicological endpoints. Improvements
to the analytical methodology used to identify ERAs or other target compounds in active fractions in the current study could
greatly enhance the applicability of the methodology to risk assessment and monitoring programmes. 相似文献

This paper develops quantitative structure activity relationships (QSARs) for the acute aquatic toxicity of the anionic surfactants linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS) and ester sulphonates (ES) to Daphnia magna, the aim being to investigate the modes of action by comparing the QSARs for the two types of surfactant. The generated data for ES have been used to develop a QSAR correlating toxicity with calculated log P values: log(1/EC50)= 0.78 log P+1.37. This equation has an intercept 1.1 log units lower than a QSAR for linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS). The findings suggest that either ES surfactants act by a different mode of action to LAS and other anionic surfactants or the log P calculation method introduces a systematic overestimate when applied to ES. 相似文献
