When eggs hatch asynchronously, offspring arising from last-hatched eggs often exhibit a competitive disadvantage compared
with their older, larger nestmates. Strong sibling competition might result in a pattern of resource allocation favoring larger
nestlings, but active food allocation towards smaller offspring may compensate for the negative effects of asynchronous hatching.
We examined patterns of resource allocation by green-rumped parrotlet parents to small and large broods under control and
food-supplemented conditions. There was no difference between parents and among brood sizes in visit rate or number of feeds
delivered, although females spent marginally more time in the nest than males. Both male and female parents preferentially
fed offspring that had a higher begging effort than the remainder of the brood. Mean begging levels did not differ between
small and large broods, but smaller offspring begged more than their older nestmates in large broods. Male parents fed small
offspring less often in both brood sizes. Female parents fed offspring evenly in small broods, while in large broods they
fed smaller offspring more frequently, with the exception of the very last hatched individual. These data suggest male parrotlets
exhibit a feeding preference for larger offspring—possibly arising from the outcome of sibling competition—but that females
practice active food allocation, particularly in larger brood sizes. These differential patterns of resource allocation between
the sexes are consistent with other studies of parrots and may reflect some level of female compensation for the limitations
imposed on smaller offspring by hatching asynchrony. 相似文献

This paper addresses the fluctuations in real metal prices: are they simply random variations or do they display some degree of cyclicality? This study identifies peaks and troughs in the inflation adjusted prices for 14 metals, using monthly average data from January 1947 through December 2007. Duration dependence testing, which is performed on the expansions, contractions, and full cycles, finds many cases in which the duration of these phases are not purely random and have some degree of cyclicality. Additional characterization show that contractions generally persist longer than expansions (in contrast to macroeconomic cycles) that long-term real prices have been trendless, and that the amplitude of price changes over the phases has little regularity. Fire is widely used in conservation management of native grasslands. Burning is often carried out under conditions that are
marginal for sustained fire spread, and therefore it would be useful to be able to predict fire sustainability. There is currently
no model allowing such prediction in temperate grasslands. This study aims to identify the environmental variables that determine
whether fires will sustain in native grasslands in Tasmania, Australia, and develop a model for predicting fire sustainability
in this vegetation. Fuel characteristics and weather conditions were recorded for 111 test fires. Logistic regression modeling
identified dead fuel moisture content, fuel load, and percentage dead fuel as predictors of fire sustainability. Classification
tree modeling identified dead fuel moisture and fuel load threshold values for sustaining fires. There was also evidence indicating
a percentage dead fuel threshold. The logistic regression model and a model combining the results of the classification tree
and the percentage dead fuel threshold accurately predicted the outcomes of a small set of experimental fires. These models
are likely to have utility in predicting fire sustainability in Tasmanian grasslands and are also likely to be applicable

Societal constraints often limit full process restoration in large river systems, making local rehabilitation activities valuable
for regeneration of riparian vegetation. A target of much mitigation and restoration is the federally threatened Valley elderberry
longhorn beetle and its sole host plant, blue elderberry, in upper riparian floodplain environments. However, blue elderberry
ecology is not well understood and restoration attempts typically have low success rates. We determined broad-scale habitat
characteristics of elderberry in altered systems and examined associated plant species composition in remnant habitat. We
quantified vegetation community composition in 139 remnant riparian forest patches along the Sacramento River and elderberry
stem diameters along this and four adjacent rivers. The greatest proportion of plots containing elderberry was located on
higher and older floodplain surfaces and in riparian woodlands dominated by black walnut. Blue elderberry saplings and shrubs
with stems <5.0 cm in diameter were rare, suggesting a lack of recruitment. A complex suite of vegetation was associated with
blue elderberry, including several invasive species which are potentially outcompeting seedlings for light, water, or other
resources. Such lack of recruitment places increased importance on horticultural restoration for the survival of an imperiled
species. These findings further indicate a need to ascertain whether intervention is necessary to maintain functional and
diverse riparian woodlands, and a need to monitor vegetative species composition over time, especially in relation to flow

We have developed a certification framework (CF) for certifying the safety and effectiveness of geologic carbon sequestration (GCS) sites. Safety and effectiveness are achieved if CO2 and displaced brine have no significant impact on humans, other living things, resources, or the environment. In the CF, we relate effective trapping to CO2 leakage risk which takes into account both the impact and probability of leakage. We achieve simplicity in the CF by using (1) wells and faults as the potential leakage pathways, (2) compartments to represent environmental resources that may be impacted by leakage, (3) CO2 fluxes and concentrations in the compartments as proxies for impact to vulnerable entities, (4) broad ranges of storage formation properties to generate a catalog of simulated plume movements, and (5) probabilities of intersection of the CO2 plume with the conduits and compartments. We demonstrate the approach on a hypothetical GCS site in a Texas Gulf Coast saline formation. Through its generality and flexibility, the CF can contribute to the assessment of risk of CO2 and brine leakage as part of the certification process for licensing and permitting of GCS sites around the world regardless of the specific regulations in place in any given country. 相似文献

Appropriate assessment of firm sustainability facilitates actor-driven processes towards sustainable development. The methodology in this paper builds further on two proven methodologies for the assessment of sustainability performance: it combines the sustainable value approach with frontier efficiency benchmarks. The sustainable value methodology tries to relate firm performance to the use of different resources. This approach assesses contributions to corporate sustainability by comparing firm resource productivity with the resource productivity of a benchmark, and this for all resources considered. The efficiency is calculated by estimating the production frontier indicating the maximum feasible production possibilities. In this research, the sustainable value approach is combined with efficiency analysis methods to benchmark sustainability assessment. In this way, the production theoretical underpinnings of efficiency analysis enrich the sustainable value approach. The methodology is presented using two different functional forms: the Cobb–Douglas and the translog functional forms. The simplicity of the Cobb–Douglas functional form as benchmark is very attractive but it lacks flexibility. The translog functional form is more flexible but has the disadvantage that it requires a lot of data to avoid estimation problems. Using frontier methods for deriving firm specific benchmarks has the advantage that the particular situation of each company is taken into account when assessing sustainability. It is possible to estimate radon exposure to man retrospectively by the in vivo measurement of the decay product (210)Pb, which accumulates in the bones. For in vivo methods, knowledge of the distribution of (210)Pb in the skeleton is needed to determine the optimal site for measurement, the skull or the knee. In this study the activity of (210)Pb in a variety of bone samples from 3 individuals have been measured in vitro using underground gamma-ray spectrometry. The individuals were unlikely to have had elevated intakes of Rn. These measurements give baseline data on the bone massic activity of (210)Pb. They show that the massic activity is similar for each of these people and there are similar massic activities of (210)Pb in the skull and the knee of the 2 individuals for which the skull was measured. Additionally for 2 of the individuals trabecular and cortical bone were separated and massic activities were found to be strongly correlated indicating that the (210)Pb is associated with the hydroxyapatite. 相似文献

Radionuclides from the U and Th natural series are present in alkaline rocks, which are used as feedstock in Brazil for the
production of raw phosphoric acid, which can be considered as a NORM (naturally occurring radioactive material). As a result
of the purification of raw phosphoric acid to food-grade phosphoric acid, two by-products are generated, i.e., solid and liquid
wastes. Taking this into account, the main aim of this study was to evaluate the fluxes of natural radionuclide in the production
of food-grade phosphoric acids in Brazil, to determine the radiological impact caused by ingestion of food-grade phosphoric
acid, and to evaluate the solid waste environmental hazards caused by its application in crop soils. Radiological characterization
of raw phosphoric acid, food-grade phosphoric acid, solid waste, and liquid waste was performed by alpha and gamma spectrometry.
The 238U, 234U, 226Ra, and 232Th activity concentrations varied depending on the source of raw phosphoric acid. Decreasing radionuclides activity concentrations
in raw phosphoric acids used by the producer of the purified phosphoric acid were observed as follows: Tapira (raw phosphoric
acid D) > Catal?o (raw phosphoric acids B and C) > Cajati (raw phosphoric acid A). The industrial purification process produces
a reduction in radionuclide activity concentrations in food-grade phosphoric acid in relation to raw phosphoric acid produced
in plant D and single raw phosphoric acid used in recent years. The most common use of food-grade phosphoric acid is in cola
soft drinks, with an average consumption in Brazil of 72 l per person per year. Each liter of cola soft drink contains 0.5 ml
of food-grade phosphoric acid, which gives an annual average intake of 36 ml of food-grade phosphoric acid per person. Under
these conditions, radionuclide intake through consumption of food-grade phosphoric acid per year per person via cola soft
drinks is not hazardous to human health in Brazil. Considering these annual additions of 238U, 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, and since these radionuclide should be homogeneously distributed in the upper 10 cm of soils with an assumed apparent density
of 1.5 g/cm3, a maximum increase of 0.19 ± 0.03 Bq kg−1 of soil is expected for 238U and 234U. Thus, the addition of solid waste as phosphate fertilizers to Brazilian agricultural soils does not represent a hazard
