Analysis of the fluctuations of the repletion index of stomachs over a 24 h period allowed us to establish the main features of the feeding behaviour for the most abundant species of euphausiids inhabiting the equatorial and south tropical Pacific Ocean. Although feeding activity never stops completely, its intensity shows usually a rhythm, revealed by a sinusoid-type curve of the repletion index. This rhythm, in most cases, is not synchronous with the day-night alternation; for several species, an increase of the feeding activity is evident as early as 14.00 hrs, i.e., long before the nocturnal ascent of animals toward the surface, when they are still concentrated in the 300 to 600 m water layer. By integrating the data for 9 species, it is shown that the search for food is, as a whole, most active by night (20.00 to 6.00 hrs) in the subsurface layers, but is also quite intense between 14.00 and 20.00 hrs in intermediate and deep layers (300 to 600 m).  相似文献

Low level liquid radioactive waste discharges from the Sellafield nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in north west England had generated environmental inventories of about 3 × 1016 Bq of137Cs, 6.8 × 1014 Bq of239,240Pu and 8.9 × 1014 Bq of241Am by 1990. Most of the239,240Pu and241Am and about 10% of the137Cs has been retained in a deposit of fine marine sediment close to the discharge point. The quantities of radionuclides discharged annually from Sellafield decreased by two orders of magnitude from the mid-1970s to 1990 but estimated critical group internal and external exposure decreased by less than one order of magnitude over this period. This indicates that during the period of reduced discharges, radionuclides already in the environment from previous releases continued to contribute to the critical group exposure and highlights the need to understand processes controlling the environmental distribution of the radionuclides. Redistribution of the contaminated marine sediment is potentially of major significance in this context, in particular if it results in transport of radionuclides to intertidal areas, where contact with the human population is relatively likely. A review is presented of published work relating to Sellafield waste radionuclides in Irish Sea sediments. Data on temporal and spatial trends in radionuclide concentrations and activity ratios are collated from a number of sources to show that the dominant mechanism of radionuclide supply to intertidal areas is by redistribution of the contaminated marine sediment. The implications of this mechanism of supply for trends in critical group radiation exposure are considered.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: To assure attainment and maintenance of desired water quality levels in our rivers and streams, systematic monitoring must be performed. A preliminary phase of the design of water quality surveillance systems is the specification of sampling frequencies and station locations throughout the basin; that is, the development of an adequate space/time sampling plan. The purpose of this paper is to present some quantitative methods which have been developed to identify candidate sets of sampling frequencies and station locations, and to establish priorities for implementing the different frequencies and locations. These methods are useful in the cost/effectiveness trade-off analyses in surveillance system design, and are based on the surveillance system objective of pollution abatement in which it is desired to detect violations in state-federal water quality standards. A spatial priority measure is developed which is dependent both on the water quality profile in the stream and on the information obtained from monitoring stations located in other reaches. Also, a temporal sampling priority rating is presented which is a measure of the effectiveness of the surveillance system with respect to its ability to detect the violations in the standards. To illustrate the quantitative methods, the procedures are applied to the Wabash River Basin.  相似文献

Summary This paper describes some of today's important information handling products and attempts to predict tomorrows devices in the light of convergence and greater flexibility offered through the use of microchip technology.The main contention of this paper is that Information Technology and its impact on privacy depends, as ever, on the way in which Information Systems are used. It is argued that the privacy issue is more to do with moral and physiological attitudes within society than the technicalities of implementation.As a conclusion, the paper asks that we should define standards and exercise vigilance in the maintenance of those standards. In addition, it recognises that attitudes to privacy will almost certainly change with time and that this should be regarded as a healthy and natural occurrence.Roger Reynolds has worked in the computer industry for 18 years and has experience in both hardware design and systems development. He has been employed in ICL for the last 5 years and has been deeply involved with the development of communications and Information Technology within this company.Previously he worked on a project designed to integrate various activities in the health service. Stormwater management that relies on ecosystem processes, such as tree canopy interception and rhizosphere biology, can be difficult to achieve in built environments because urban land is costly and urban soil inhospitable to vegetation. Yet such systems offer a potentially valuable tool for achieving both sustainable urban forests and stormwater management. We evaluated tree water uptake and root distribution in a novel stormwater mitigation facility that integrates trees directly into detention reservoirs under pavement. The system relies on structural soils: highly porous engineered mixes designed to support tree root growth and pavement. To evaluate tree performance under the peculiar conditions of such a stormwater detention reservoir (i.e., periodically inundated), we grew green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh.) and swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor Willd.) in either CUSoil or a Carolina Stalite-based mix subjected to three simulated below-system infiltration rates for two growing seasons. Infiltration rate affected both transpiration and rooting depth. In a factorial experiment with ash, rooting depth always increased with infiltration rate for Stalite, but this relation was less consistent for CUSoil. Slow-drainage rates reduced transpiration and restricted rooting depth for both species and soils, and trunk growth was restricted for oak, which grew the most in moderate infiltration. Transpiration rates under slow infiltration were 55% (oak) and 70% (ash) of the most rapidly transpiring treatment (moderate for oak and rapid for ash). We conclude this system is feasible and provides another tool to address runoff that integrates the function of urban green spaces with other urban needs.  相似文献

Accumulation and elimination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were studied in the fungus Fusarium solani. When the fungus was grown on a synthetic medium containing benzo[a]pyrene, hyphae of F. solani contained numerous lipid vesicles which could be stained by the lipid-specific dyes: Sudan III and Rhodamine B. The fluorescence produced by Rhodamine B and PAH benzo[a]pyrene were at the same locations in the fungal hyphae, indicating that F. solani stored PAH in pre-existing lipid vesicles. A passive temperature-independent process is involved in the benzo[a]pyrene uptake and storage. Sodium azide, a cytochrome c oxidation inhibitor, and the two cytoskeleton inhibitors colchicine and cytochalasin did not prevent the transport and accumulation of PAH in lipid vesicles of F. solani hyphae. F. solani degraded a large range of PAHs at different rates. PAH intracellular storage in lipid vesicles was not necessarily accompanied by degradation and was common to numerous other fungi.  相似文献
