Feasibility of an irrigation project is evaluated by two criteria viz., reservoir capacity to irrigate its command area and
economic returns by incremental crop production versus capital investment for dam construction. The annual water requirement
of different crops in the command area is estimated and compared with the availability of water from the dam for irrigation
purpose. The annual crop water requirement is estimated as the sum of evapotranspiration for crops and transmission and other
losses. Evapotranspiration is estimated by modified Penman formula. Economics of crop production is analyzed by first estimating
the monetary value of existing crop production under current rain fed conditions and then estimating the incremental production
of irrigated command area for the proposed crop pattern. The proposed cropping pattern is prepared so as to maximize the benefit
of crop production and fodder requirement while maintaining a better crop rotation to improve and maintain physical, chemical,
and biological conditions of the soil. The dam is to be used for irrigation and water supply only. Command area served by
this reservoir will be 76,500 ha. The existing annual agricultural return is Rs. 2995.56 lakhs and with the proposed irrigation
scheme, it is estimated as Rs. 1,77,91.90 lakhs. The incremental annual return would be Rs. 1,47,96.35 lakhs i.e., 642.68%
increase in annual return. 相似文献

Two strains of Bacillus sp. resistant to arsenate and lead designated as AsSP9 and PbSP6, respectively were isolated from the slag disposal site. They were identified to be related to Bacillus cereus cluster on the basis of 16S rDNA based sequence analysis and phenotypic characteristics. Both were rod-shaped (AsSP9, 2-5 microm and PbSP6, 2-4 microm), aerobic, salt tolerant (2-8% NaCI), endospore forming bacteria with minor differences like the AsSP9 showed sporangial bulging and PbSP6 had positive lipase activity. The temperature range for their growth was 20-40 degrees C and pH range 6.0-9.0 with an optimum temperature of 37 degrees C and pH of 7 for both strains. The principal nitrogen sources forAsSP9 and PbSP6 were DL-Tryptophan and L-Phenylalanine, respectively. The suitable carbon source forAsSP9 was lactose and for PbSP6 sucrose. The heavy metal accumulation efficiency was found to be 0.0047 mg g(-1) of dry mass forAsSP9 and 0.686 mg g(-1) of dry mass for PbSP6. 相似文献

Economic Development,Income Inequality and Environmental Degradation of Fisheries Resources in Mauritius 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sobhee SK 《Environmental management》2004,34(1):150-157
This article examines how environmental degradation of fisheries resources in the context of Mauritius is linked up with human investment in education, economic growth, and income inequality. Empirical evidence shows that public-sector investment in education promotes economic growth, but at the expense of greater inequality of income. Among the vulnerable groups affected by this type of development process lies the fisherman community. In fact, children of poor families in coastal Mauritius have constrained access to complete school education because of the persistently high opportunity cost involved. Hence, this community is caught up in a vicious circle, as its children or grandchildren would barely be redeployed elsewhere other than in the fisheries sector itself. Such exclusion might account for the overexploitation of marine resources of the island and the accompanying reduction in fish catch over recent years.*(Paper presented at the Third Research and Training Workshop of the Resource Accounting Network for Eastern and Southern Africa (RANESA), University of Pretoria (Funded by SIDA, Sweden), held in Mauritius, Nov 2000. I am grateful to the participants for their helpful suggestions. Needless to say, the usual disclaimer applies).
