Residual inorganic soil nitrogen in grass and maize on sandy soil

Nitrogen (N) remaining as inorganic ('mineral') soil N at crop harvest (N(minH)) contributes to nitrate leaching. N(minH) data from 20 (grass) and 78 (maize) experiments were examined to identify main determinants of N(minH). N-rate (A) explained 51% (grass) and 34% (maize) of the variance in N(minH). Best models included in addition crop N-offtake (U), offtake in unfertilised plots (U(0)), and N(minH) in unfertilised plots (N(minH,0)) and then explained up to 75% of variance. At low N-rates where apparent N recovery rho keeps to its initial value rho(ini), N(minH) keeps to its base level N(minH,0). At N-rates that exceed the value A(crit) where rho drops below rho(ini), N(minH) rises above N(minH,0) by an amount proportional to (rho(ini)-rho)A. About 80% of (rho(ini)-rho)A was found as N(minH,) in grass as well as in maize. The fraction (1-rho(ini))A does not appear to contribute to N(minH) at low N-rates (A< or =A(crit)) or at high N-rates (A>A(crit)).     

Physical analyses of compost from composting plants in Brazil

Nowadays the composting process has shown itself to be an alternative in the treatment of municipal solid wastes by composting plants. However, although more than 50% of the waste generated by the Brazilian population is composed of matter susceptible to organic composting, this process is, still today, insufficiently developed in Brazil, due to low compost quality and lack of investments in the sector. The objective of this work was to use physical analyses to evaluate the quality of the compost produced at 14 operative composting plants in the Sao Paulo State in Brazil. For this purpose, size distribution and total inert content tests were done. The results were analyzed by grouping the plants according to their productive processes: plants with a rotating drum, plants with shredders or mills, and plants without treatment after the sorting conveyor belt. Compost quality was analyzed considering the limits imposed by the Brazilian Legislation and the European standards for inert contents. The size distribution tests showed the influence of the machinery after the sorting conveyer on the granule sizes as well as the inert content, which contributes to the presence of materials that reduce the quality of the final product.     

Prenatal detection of aortic coarctation in a well-organized screening setting: Are we there yet?

Objective

We aimed to assess current prenatal detection rate (DR) of aortic coarctation (CoA) and its impact on neonatal outcome in the Netherlands to evaluate the efficacy of the Dutch screening protocol in which the cardiac four-chamber view, outflow tracts and three-vessel view are compulsory.

Methods

All prenatally and postnatally diagnosed CoA cases between 2012 and 2021 were extracted from our PRECOR-registry. Annual DRs were calculated with a focus on the trend over time and attributing factors for detection. Postnatal outcome was compared between prenatally detected and undetected cases.

Results

49/116 cases (42.2%) were detected prenatally. A higher chance of detection was found for cases with extracardiac malformations (71.4%; p = 0.001) and the more severe cases with an aortic arch hypoplasia and/or ventricular septal defect (63.2%; p = 0.001). Time-trend analysis showed no improvement in DR over time (p = 0.33). Undetected cases presented with acute circulatory shock in 20.9% and were more likely to have severe lactic acidosis (p = 0.02) and impaired cardiac function (p < 0.001) before surgery.

Conclusion

Even in a well-organized screening program, the DR of CoA still requires improvement, especially in isolated cases. The increased risk of severe lactic acidosis in undetected cases stresses the need for urgent additions to the current screening program, such as implementation of the three-vessel trachea view and measurement of outflow tracts.
