The results from three long-term field manipulation studies of the impacts of increased nitrogen deposition (0–120 kg N ha–1 yr–1) on lowland and upland heathlands in the UK were compared, to test if common responses are observed. Consistent increases in Calluna foliar N content and decreases in litter C:N ratios were found across all sites, while increases in N leaching were not observed at any site over the range 0–80 kg ha–1 yr–1. However, the response of Calluna biomass did vary between sites, possibly reflecting site differences in nutrient status and management histories. Five versions of a simulation model of heathland responses to N were developed, each reflecting different assumptions about the fate and turnover of soil N. Model outputs supported the deduction from mass balance calculations at two of the field sites that N additions have resulted in an increase in immobilisation; the latter was needed to prevent the model overestimating measured N leaching. However, this version of the model significantly underestimated Calluna biomass. Model versions, which included uptake of organic N by Callunaand re-mobilisation of N from the soil organic store provided some improvement in the fit between modelled and field biomass data, but re-mobilisation also led to an overestimation of N leaching. Quantification of these processes and their response to increased N deposition are therefore critical to interpreting experimental data and predicting the long-term impacts of atmospheric deposition on heathlands and moorlands. 相似文献

The role of hindrance stressors in the job demand–control–support model of occupational stress: A proposed theory revision 下载免费PDF全文
Previous research on the job demand–control–support (JDCS) model of occupational stress has generally been inconsistent at best regarding a key issue: the interaction of demands, control, and support in predicting employee health and well‐being. However, the model continues to be tested in a variety of studies and academic journals owing to its intuitive appeal. By incorporating conservation of resources theory with knowledge from the challenge–hindrance stressor framework, we proposed that hindrance stressors, not the challenge stressors commonly assessed when testing JDCS theory, will provide validation for the model. A two‐wave panel study of 228 employees in a variety of occupations provided support for three‐way interactions between hindrance demands, control, and support predicting job‐related anxiety and physical symptoms. Three‐way interactions using a challenge demand (forms of workload) were not significant, consistent with our propositions. In summary, this study supports the buffering effect of control and support on the relationship between job demands and strain only when job demands reflect hindrance stressors, thereby proposing to alter the JDCS model by specifying that it applies primarily to hindrance stressors in a job hindrance–control–support model. Elevated personal exposures to particles have been reported in buses, but the factors associated with these high exposures are uncertain, and the potential role of passenger activities within buses has not been quantified. To improve understanding of this factor we measured particle number concentrations in the range 0.3–15 μm simultaneously inside and outside buses in the city of York (UK), while carefully noting passenger activities. We also developed a box model to simulate the effects of passenger activities, and parameterised this from independent studies with controlled passenger activities. The number concentrations inside buses were significantly higher than those outside in all size classes, and the inside/outside ratios increased with particle size. The model showed broad agreement with measured particle concentrations inside buses, and demonstrated, for particles in the range 3–15 μm, that both re-suspension by passenger activities and deposition to the surface of the passengers had significant effects on concentrations. Hence, understanding of the effects of passenger activities on both particle deposition and re-suspension is essential to interpret exposure measurements inside buses. Exposure of regular commuters inside buses could be of potential health significance and needs further assessment. 相似文献
