At a locality at 32-m depth in Oslofjord, Norway, temperature varied from 4.8° to 9.2°C and salinity varied from 31.2 to 33.3 S over a two-year period. There was a peak in chlorophyll a, and C and N in April–June and a smaller peak in November in the sediment. Bacterial numbers showed maxima in July–August and November–December. The macrobenthic fauna was typical of a species-rich and undisturbed boreal community of silt-clay sediments. The community was predominantly composed of surface and subsurface deposit feeders. Over the twoyear period there was little variation in numerical abundance or biomass of the species despite the variation in food input. The lack of seasonality shown by the fauna probably relates to the lack of variability of the physical environment. The mechanism by which this control is achieved, however, is not known. There are large predators/disturbers in the community such as the polychaetes Lumbrineris fragilis, Glycera rouxii, G. alba, Nephthys spp. and the echinoid Brissopsis lyrifera, which probably play an important role in structuring the community. 相似文献

Rates of alder leaf decomposition were used as an ecosystem-level measure of effects of untreated and treated acid mine drainage on two Colorado mountain streams. Untreated mine effluents had low pH and high concentrations of metals, particularly iron. Deposition of ferric hydroxide on leaf surfaces inhibited colonization by decomposers, such as fungi and aquatic insects, and thus little leaf breakdown occurred. Treated effluents had improved water quality (basic pH, low metal concentrations), but suspended flocs released by the treatment process buried leaves and reduced consumer activity. The rate of leaf breakdown was not significantly different from the rate with untreated effluents; thus improvement in water quality alone was insufficient to restore this important pathway of energy flow in headwater streams. 相似文献

This paper argues that the environmental changes witnessed in the past decade call for a new approach to environmental management; an approach based not on the principle of the assimilative capacity of the environment but on the precautionary principle, and the emerging preventive environmental paradigm. Uncertainties in scientific knowledge and complexities in ecological systems have presented specific failures of the assimilative capacity methodology. It is argued that these failures are not circumstantial in nature, nor are they the result of misapplication of science by scientists. Rather, they represent inherent problems in the use of the assimilative capacity concept in environmental management. The emergence of the precautionary principle is discussed and a formulation of the principle is presented. In conjunction with the operational approach of clean production, we believe that this principle offers a sounder basis for the prevention of marine pollution in the next decade. 相似文献

The marine polychaete worm Nereis virens was used to study the bioaccumulation patterns of metal exposures with pulverised fuel ash (PFA). Juvenile N. virens were exposed for 12 weeks to sediments comprised of 100% PFA, 50% PFA-50% clean sand, a reference sediment (contaminated harbour-dredged material) and a clean sand control. Mortality after the first 4 weeks was high at 32–45% in the four sediments. However, this declined to a few percent during the following 8 weeks. Growth expressed as biomass (wet weight) was reduced in bout PFA treatments and the reference sediment. Heavy metal accumulation in the tissues of N. virens was characterised as follows: a group of elements showed negligible to low accumulation (Cd, Cr, Ni, and Zn), As and Cu wich showed a definite, but moderate accumulation: and finally Se, which showed a low accumulation rate, where an uptake equilibrium was not reached after 9 weeks. It is concluded that acute toxic effects did not occur but a population of N. virens inhabiting a PFA dumping site could be affected by high Se concentrations. 相似文献
