Ozonation of aniline promoted by activated carbon 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The removal of aniline from aqueous solutions by simultaneous use of ozone and activated carbon was investigated at different solution pH. For comparative purposes, single ozonation and adsorption on activated carbon were carried out in the same experimental set-up. In order to evaluate the role of the activated carbon surface chemistry during ozonation, a commercial activated carbon, Norit GAC 1240 PLUS, was submitted to oxidation in the liquid phase with HNO(3). The texture and surface chemistry of the activated carbon samples were characterized. During ozonation, complete conversion of aniline was achieved after approximately 20 min, regardless of the presence of activated carbon. In all cases, several by-products were formed during ozonation. Nitrobenzene, o- and p-aminophenol were the primary aromatic oxidation by-products identified. In terms of TOC removal, best results were achieved by the simultaneous use of ozone and activated carbon. Though there is a strong contribution of adsorption, a considerable synergetic effect between ozone and activated carbon is observed. In general, activated carbon promotes the reaction of ozonation enhancing the efficiency of this treatment process. The basic activated carbon presented greater activity in this process leading to higher mineralization rates. 相似文献

This study aims to investigate the effect of management regime on canopy arthropod community of the olive tree (Olea europaea L.). Field studies were performed in two successive years, 2002 and 2003, in two olive groves, one under organic farming and the other under integrated protection. The integrated protection grove was sprayed once a year in June, with dimethoate, to control the anthophagous generation of the olive moth, Prays oleae (Bern.). From April to November of each year, the canopy arthropods were sampled weekly. PRC method was used to analyse the effect of management regime at the community level and results showed that taxa responded differently to insecticide application suggesting that the organic grove was a more suitable habitat for the arthropods than the integrated protection grove. Abundance of arthropods peaked in May and June for both years but, after spraying with dimethoate, decreased significantly in integrated protection grove, recovering very slowly thereafter. Psocoptera, Miridae, Formicidae and Coccinellidae were the most sensitive taxa to insecticide application. Their decreasing in abundance was more evident in the second year of the trial. On the other hand chrysopids showed some tolerance to insecticide applications. These results suggest that the timing of spray is of utmost importance in reducing the side effects of spraying on beneficial arthropods. PROBLEM: Fresh market berry production workers are exposed to physical risk factors for musculoskeletal injury. METHOD: We disseminated information through trade publications and other sources to berry managers in seven U.S. states about five prevention through design practices that were both safer and more profitable than traditional methods. We administered mail evaluation questionnaires prior to the intervention and after each of four intervention years to rolling, independent U.S. samples and to comparison New Zealand berry farm manager samples after years one through three. RESULTS: U.S. manager self-reports of reading trade publication information increased compared to baseline values for two of five practices and self-reported awareness increased for four of five practices. There were no increases in adoption. More U.S. than New Zealand managers reported getting information about two practices from trade publications and about four practices from public events. No U.S. versus New Zealand differences were observed in reported awareness or adoption for any practice. IMPACT ON INDUSTRY: This study showed that even a modest campaign can build awareness of safer practices fairly quickly in three to four years among small agricultural firms but that increasing adoption apparently requires more time. Widespread adoption of safer practices could help keep operators in business longer as they age by reducing the workload and musculoskeletal strain associated with labor intensive crop production for them and their workforce. Adoption of practices that also improve profits, like the five practices featured in this study, could also help managers stay in business. 相似文献

The effect of mercury and its interaction with zinc on the content of essential metals in tissues from neonate rats was investigated. Three-day-old Wistar rats were treated with saline or 27 mg kg(-1)d(-1) ZnCl2 (s.c.) for five consecutive days. From the 8th to the 12th day of life, the rats received one daily dose of saline or 5.0 mg kg(-1) HgCl2 (s.c). Twenty-four hours after the last injection liver, kidneys and blood were collected for metal quantification. The HgCl(2) exposure induced alterations on metal levels, such as increase of Fe, Hg and Zn in liver, decrease of Fe and Mg and increase of Cu and Hg contents in kidneys. The Hg exposure also increased Hg levels in the blood. The treatment with ZnCl2, administered previously to HgCl2, partially prevented the increase of Fe in the liver, and not only prevented the decrease of renal Mg but also increased it to levels higher than those found in control group. The Zn-Hg rats also presented higher renal Cu levels, and showed partially lower blood and hepatic Hg levels and higher renal Hg levels. The pre-administration of Zn caused no severe alterations in levels of essential metals (Cu, Fe, Mg and Mn). In short, Zn appears to be an alternative treatment of Hg poisoning in young animals in comparison to chelating drugs since these have low metal selectivity. 相似文献

The present study intends to increase the knowledge on the mobility of mercury in a salt marsh colonised by Halimione portulacoides. Mercury distribution in the sediment layers and its incorporation into the plant biomass were assessed, as well as the potential export of mercury from the contaminated area to the adjacent environment. Mercury pools in the sediments ranged from 560 to 943 mg m(-2) and are largely associated with the solid fraction, with just a small amount being associated with the pore waters. Estimated diffusive fluxes of reactive mercury ranged from 1.3 to 103 ng m(-2) d(-1). Despite the above ground biomass values being comparatively higher than below ground biomass values, the mercury pools were much higher in the root system (0.06-0.16 mg m(-2) and 29-102 mg m(-2), respectively). The annual bioaccumulation of mercury in above ground tissues was estimated in 0.11 mg m(-2) y(-1), while in below ground biomass the values were higher (7 2mg m(-2) y(-1)). The turnover rates of H. portulacoides biomass suggest higher mercury mobility within the plant rhizosphere. Taking into account the pools of mercury in above ground biomass, the export of mercury by macro-detritus following the "outwelling hypothesis" is not significant for the mercury balance in the studied ecosystem. The objective of this work was to determine the impact of neighbourhood land-cover in epiphytic lichen diversity. We used geostatistics to analyse the spatial structure of lichen-indicators (number of lichen species and Lichen Diversity Value) and correlate them to land-cover considering different distances from the observed data. The results showed that lichen diversity was influenced by different environmental factors that act in the same territory but impact lichens at different distances from the source. The differences in the distance of influence of the several land-cover types seem to be related to the size of pollutants/particles that predominantly are dispersed by each land-cover type. We also showed that a local scale of analysis gives a deeper insight into the understanding of lichen richness and abundance in the region. This work highlighted the importance of a multiple spatial scale of analysis to deeply interpret the relation between lichen diversity and the underling environmental factors. 相似文献

Birth sex ratios were examined for ringtailed lemurs (Lemur catta) at the Duke University Primate Center. This population provides a long-term database of births under a variety of demographic
and management conditions, including two semi-freeranging groups between which males transfer freely and females defend stable
territorial boundaries. We examined three hypotheses usually considered in studies of primate sex ratio bias. The Trivers-Willard
hypothesis predicts that dominant females produce males, local resource competition at the population level (LRC-population)
predicts that the dispersing sex (males) will be overproduced in dense populations, and local resource competition among individuals
(LRC-individual) predicts that dominant females overproduce the philopatric sex (females). We also examined a fourth hypothesis,
local resource enhancement (LRE), which is usually subsumed under LRC-individual in studies of primate sex ratio evolution.
LRE predicts that under certain conditions, females will produce the sex that provides later cooperative benefits, such as
alliance support for within- or between-group competition. Our data provide support for LRE: females overproduce daughters
given prospects of new group formation, either through group fission or threatened expulsion of young mothers. Behavioral
data from Duke and also wild populations show that daughters serve mothers as important allies in this context and LRE effects
also have been documented in other mammals that experience similar group histories. Nonsignificant trends in the data supported
the LRC-population hypothesis, and we suggest that LRC interacts with LRE to explain offspring sex ratios in ringtailed lemurs.
