Despite their prevalence in both developed and developing countries, there have been surprisingly few field assessments of
the ecological effectiveness of protected areas. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a key protected area in eastern
Madagascar, Ranomafana National Park (RNP). We established paired 100 × 4-m vegetation transects (400 m2) within RNP and in remnant forests in the park’s peripheral zone. In each 400-m2 plot, all woody stems >1.5 cm in diameter at breast height were measured and identified to species. All species were also
identified as native or non-native. We identified utilitarian species within all transects and they were sorted into use category.
We calculated plot-level taxonomic biodiversity and functional diversity of utilitarian species; the latter was calculated
by clustering the multivariate distances between species based on their utilitarian traits, and all metrics were tested using
paired t-tests. Our results showed that there was significantly higher biodiversity inside RNP than in remnant forests and this pattern
was consistent across all diversity metrics examined. Forests not located within the park’s boundary had significantly higher
non-native species than within RNP. There was no statistically significant difference in functional diversity of utilitarian
species inside RNP vs. remnant forests; however, the overall trend was toward higher diversity inside park boundaries. These
findings suggested that RNP has been effective at maintaining taxonomic diversity relative to surrounding unprotected areas
and restricting the spread of non-native plants. The results also suggested that low functional redundancy of forests outside
of RNP might be of concern, because residents in surrounding villages may have few other substitutes for the services provided
by species that are of critical importance to their livelihoods. This study highlights the challenges of trying to reconcile
biodiversity conservation with human use of natural resources in economically poor, remote areas. 相似文献

Use of Descriptors of Ecosystem Functioning for Monitoring a National Park Network: A Remote Sensing Approach 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Baseline assessments and monitoring of protected areas are essential for making management decisions, evaluating the effectiveness
of management practices, and tracking the effects of global changes. For these purposes, the analysis of functional attributes
of ecosystems (i.e., different aspects of the exchange of matter and energy) has advantages over the traditional use of structural
attributes, like a quicker response to disturbances and the fact that they are easily monitored through remote sensing. In
this study, we described the spatiotemporal patterns of different aspects of the ecosystem functioning of the Spanish national
parks and their response to environmental changes between 1982 and 2006. To do so, we used the NOAA/AVHRR-GIMMS dataset of
the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), a linear estimator of the fraction of photosynthetic active radiation intercepted
by vegetation, which is the main control of carbon gains. Nearly all parks have significantly changed during the last 25 years:
The radiation interception has increased, the contrast between the growing and nongrowing seasons has diminished, and the
dates of maximum and minimum interception have advanced. Some parks concentrated more changes than others and the degree of
change varied depending on their different environmental conditions, management, and conservation histories. Our approach
identified reference conditions and temporal changes for different aspects of ecosystem functioning, which can be used for

Along with the growing boating population and the number of boats in use on limited inland waterways, boater expectations
of setting density, safety perceptions, and the associated impacts on their experience (e.g., satisfaction) are becoming increasingly
important. The primary purpose of this article was to explore a recreational boating crowding–satisfaction model derived from
previous work using safety and enjoyment as mediating variables. We also tested our crowding–satisfaction model among day
and overnight users. Our analysis revealed no significant difference between day and overnight users for any of the relationships
tested in our model. Our final model indicated as respondents’ expectations for seeing people increased along with their feelings
of being crowded, they were more inclined to consider the conditions on the lake as being unsafe. They were also more inclined
to indicate that the number of people they had seen on the lake detracted from their boating experience. Respondents’ satisfaction
was tied to their perceptions of crowding. Mediating variables illustrated that the relationship was conditioned by perceptions
of safety and enjoyment. Analysis of the indirect effect observed in our study illustrate that when the number of people seen
on the lake exceed respondents’ expectations, their perceptions of safety and enjoyment both decline, resulting in lower satisfaction.
These findings have implications for managing recreational boating use on inland lake systems. Given the role played by expectations
in our model, efforts to communicate with boaters about conditions on these waterways is important for helping them plan their
boating experience and avoid situations they consider unsafe or unsatisfactory. 相似文献

Tourism and landscape are interdependent concepts. Nature- and culture-based tourism are now quite well developed activities
and can constitute an excellent way of exploiting the natural resources of certain areas, and should therefore be considered
as key objectives in landscape planning and management in a growing number of countries. All of this calls for careful evaluation
of the effects of tourism on the territory. This article focuses on an integrated spatial method for landscape analysis aimed
at quantifying the relationship between preferences of visitors and landscape features. The spatial expression of the model
relating types of leisure and recreational preferences to the potential capacity of the landscape to meet them involves a
set of maps showing degrees of potential visitor satisfaction. The method constitutes a useful tool for the design of tourism

In this paper deposition rate coefficients for unattached and attached radon progeny were estimated according to a particle deposition model for turbulent indoor airflow described by Zhao and Wu [2006. Modeling particle deposition from fully developed turbulent flow in ventilation duct. Atmos. Environ. 40, 457–466]. The parameter which characterizes turbulent indoor airflow in this model is friction velocity, u*. Indoor ventilation changes indoor airflow and friction velocity and influences deposition rate coefficients. Correlation between deposition and ventilation rate coefficients in the room was determined. It was shown that deposition rate coefficient increases with ventilation rate coefficient and that these parameters of the Jacobi room model cannot be assumed to be independent. The values of deposition rate coefficients were presented as functions of friction velocity and ventilation rate coefficient. If ventilation rate coefficient varies from 0.1 up to 1 h−1, deposition rate coefficients for unattached and attached fractions were estimated to be in the range 3–110 h−1 and 0.015–0.35 h−1, respectively. 相似文献

Empirical relations between the 90Sr concentration factor (CF) and the calcium concentration in freshwater aquatic systems have previously been determined in studies based on data obtained prior to the Chernobyl accident. The purpose of the present research is to review and compare these models, and to test them against a database of post-Chernobyl measurements from rivers and lakes in Ukraine, Russia, Belarus and Finland. It was found that two independently developed models, based on pre-Chernobyl empirical data, are in close agreement with each other, and with empirical data. Testing of both models against new data obtained after the Chernobyl accident confirms the models’ predictive ability. An investigation of the influence of fish size on 90Sr accumulation showed no significant relationship, though the data set was somewhat limited. 相似文献

This study consisted of the sediment toxicity assessment of the Bay of Cádiz based on two endpoints: growth inhibition for Cylindrotheca closterium (benthic microalgae) and fecundity inhibition for Tisbe battagliai (harpacticoid copepod). A new methodology to eliminate (but not as storage technique) the autochthonous biota present in the sediment samples by immersing them in liquid nitrogen (? 196 °C) was also assessed. Sediment toxicity data showed different toxicity levels for both organisms. In general, T. battagliai was more sensitive; however a good correlation (r = 0.75; p < 0.05) between sediment toxicity results for both species was found. Data in pore water (pH, redox potential, and toxicity for microalgae and copepod) and sediment (pH, redox potential, organic carbon, and metal concentrations) demonstrated that ultra-freezing did not alter sample characteristics; thus, this technique can be adopted as a pre-treatment in whole-sediment toxicity tests in order to avoid misleading results due to presence of autochthonous biota. Multivariate statistical analysis such as cluster and principal component analysis using chemical and ecotoxicological data were employed. Silt and organic matter percentage and lead concentration were found to be the factors that explain about 77% of sediment toxicity in the Bay of Cádiz. Assay methodology determined in this study for both assayed species is considered adequate to be used in sediment toxicity monitoring programs. The Mining and Chemical Industrial Combine, Zheleznogorsk (MCIC, previously known as Krasnoyarsk-26) on the River Yenisey has contaminated the surrounding environment with anthropogenic radionuclides as a result of discharges of radioactive wastes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the vertical distribution of anthropogenic contamination (137Cs and plutonium) within floodplain areas at different distances from the discharge point. Sites were chosen that display different characteristics with respect to periodic inundation with river water. Cs-137 activity concentrations were in the range 23–3770 Bq/kg (dry weight, d.w.); Pu-239,240 activity concentrations were in the range <0.01–14.2 Bq/kg (d.w.). Numerous sample cores exhibited sub-surface maxima which may be related to the historical discharges from the MCIC. Possible evidence indicating the deposition of earlier discharges at MCIC in deeper core layers was observed in the 238Pu:239,240Pu activity ratio data: a Pu signal discernible from global fallout could be observed in numerous samples. Cs-137 and Pu-239,240 activity concentrations were correlated with the silt fraction (% by mass <63 μm) though no significant correlation was observed between (grain-size) normalised 137Cs activity concentrations and distance downstream from the MCIC. 相似文献

The understanding and evaluation of the possible interactions of various naturally occurring radionuclides in the world's third largest man-made dam, Nagarjuna Sagar located in Andhra Pradesh, India and built on river Krishna assumed significance with the finding of uranium deposits in locations near the dam. For the present work, surface soil samples from the mineralized area of Lambapur, Mallapuram, Peddagattu and sediment core samples from the Nagarjuna Sagar dam were analyzed for naturally occurring radionuclides namely uranium and thorium using gamma spectrometric technique. Also toxic elements lead and chromium were analysed by the Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (EDXRF) technique. Surface soil samples show a variation from 25 to 291 Bq/kg (2.02–23.5 mg/kg) for 238U and 32–311 Bq/kg (7.9–76.9 mg/kg) for 232Th. U/Th concentration ratio in surface soil samples ranged from 0.19 to 0.31 and was found comparable with the nation wise average of 0.26. The study of sediment core samples reflected higher U/Th concentration ratio of 0.30–0.33 in the bottom section of the core as compared to 0.22–0.25 in the upper section. The concentration ratio in the upper section of the core was similar to the ratio 0.23 found in the western Deccan Basalt region through which the river originates. A higher concentration of lead and chromium was observed in the upper section of the core compared to bottom section indicating the impact of river input on the geochemical character of dam sediment. 相似文献
