In this study, we investigated the effect of some potential alleviative compounds against the acute toxicity of arsenic (AsV, AsIII and DMAV) on Aliivibrio fischeri (formerly Vibrio fischeri), a bioluminescent model bacterium, through the Microtox® bioassay. The compounds studied differed in their mechanism of action, and they included the following: phosphate and glycerol, as chemical analogues (and potential competitors) of AsV or AsIII, respectively; citrate, a weak natural organic ligand; and the antioxidant ascorbic acid. Special attention was paid to phosphate effects, a widespread pollutant in natural environments. AsV was found to be more acutely toxic than AsIII to A. fischeri, in accordance with its higher interaction with the bacteria. Both AsV and AsIII were found to be much more acutely toxic than DMAV, which was essentially non-acutely toxic even at very high concentrations. Phosphate presence (at equimolar P/As ratios or higher) resulted in the almost total suppression of bioluminescence inhibition, suggesting it exerts an alleviative effect against AsV acute toxicity on A. fischeri. Interestingly, the uptake and the percentage of extracellular AsV were not affected by the addition of phosphate, suggesting that such protective effect does not result from the competition for their common transporters. In contrast, the acute toxicity of AsIII was essentially unaffected by phosphate. Glycerol did not decrease the acute toxicity or the uptake of AsIII by A. fischeri, denoting the likely occurrence of an additional mechanism for AsIII uptake in such bacteria. Similarly, citrate and ascorbic acid essentially did not caused alleviation of AsV or AsIII acute toxicity. As for environmental and operational implications, P could beneficially protect aquatic microorganisms against acute detrimental effects of AsV, whilst its presence could mask the toxicity due to AsV when assessed using the Microtox® bioassay, thus leading to seriously underestimate the actual ecological and health risks. 相似文献

Upon leaving their natal area, dispersers are confronted with unknown terrains. Species-specific perceptual ranges (i.e. the maximum distance from which an individual can perceive landscape features) play a crucial role in spatial movement decisions during such wanderings. In nocturnal animals that rely on vision, perceptual range is dramatically enhanced during moonlight, compared to moonless conditions. This increase of the perceptual range is an overlooked element that may be responsible for the successful crossing of unfamiliar areas during dispersal. The information gathered from 143 radio-tagged eagle owl Bubo bubo juveniles in Spain, Finland and Switzerland shows that, although the decision to initiate dispersal is mainly an endogenous phenomenon determined by the attainment of a given age (~6 months), dispersers leave their birthplace primarily under the best light conditions at night, i.e. when most of the lunar disc is illuminated. The paper industry has a relatively high degree of reliance on suppliers when compared to other industries. Exploring the role of the paper industry in terms of consumption of intermediate inputs from other industries may help to understand how the production of paper does not only generate waste by itself but also affects the amount of waste generated by other industries. The product Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a useful analytical tool to examine and assess environmental impacts over the entire life cycle of a product “from cradle to grave” but it is costly and time intensive. In contrast, Economic Input Output Life Cycle Assessment Models (IO-LCA) that combine LCA with Input–Output analysis (IO) are more accurate and less expensive, as they employ publicly available data. This paper represents one of the first Spanish studies aimed at estimating the waste generated in the production of paper by applying IO-LCA. One of the major benefits is the derivation of the contribution of direct and indirect suppliers to the paper industry. The results obtained show that there was no direct relationship between the impact on output and the impact on waste generation exerted by the paper industry. The major contributors to waste generation were the mining industry and the forestry industry. 相似文献

Feeding ecology was analysed for the first time in the larvae of the European hake (Merluccius merluccius) to determine whether their diet and selectivity were constrained by environmental conditions and how these feeding characteristics
were related to ontogeny, prey availability and visual capabilities. Larvae collected during both day and night were analysed,
and it was found that feeding incidence was high, regardless of the time of day. Examination of the visual system corroborated
the hypothesis that hake larvae should be able to cope with a wide range of photic conditions and to forage even at low light
intensity. A clear preference for adult calanoid copepods and, especially, for Clausocalanus spp. was observed in all sizes analysed. Prey number increased with larval size, but prey size did not. This finding indicates
that hake larvae behave as selective and specialist predators that consume an increasing number of prey rather than larger
