The term 'Waldsterben' was introduced in the early 1980s to describe the progressive death of forests that was believed to be occurring in Central Europe as a result of air pollution. Subsequent surveys and investigations have failed to confirm that forests are dying or are even declining over large areas of Central Europe, defined here as consisting of Germany, Switzerland, southeastern France (Alsace), the Czech Republic, northern Italy and Austria. Foliar injury by air pollutants, together with mortality, has occurred, but is generally restricted to specific locations in the Czech Republic and in eastern Germany, such as the Fichtelgebirge. Where foliar damage has been recorded, it can often be attributed to high concentrations of sulphur dioxide, often acting in combination with other stresses (e.g. frost or insects). Outside areas affected by local sources of pollution, there is little, if any, evidence that the crown condition of trees has been adversely affected by pollution over large areas. Instead, climate appears to have a major effect on the crown condition and growth of trees. Measurements and surveys have revealed a very different picture to that forecasted in the mid-1980s. Growth rates of trees and stands in Central Europe are currently higher than have been recorded at any time in the past; the reasons for this are uncertain, although increases in forest area have not substantially contributed to the observed trends. Although declines in individual species in specific areas have been recorded, past records indicate that these do not represent a new phenomenon. Consequently, the terms 'Waldsterben' (forest deaths) and 'neuartige Waldsch?den' (novel type of forest damages) should not be used in the context of the phenomenon reported in Central Europe in the 1980s. Instead, different problems should be described separately and the term forest decline used only when there is clear evidence of a general deterioration in the condition of all tree species within a forest.  相似文献

The combined influence on the environment of all projects occurring in a single area is evaluated through cumulative impact assessments (CIA), which consider the consequences of multiple projects, each insignificant on its own, yet important when evaluated collectively. Traditionally, future human activities are included in CIA using an analytical platform, commonly based on complex models that supply precise predictions but with reduced accuracy. To compensate for the lack of accuracy in current CIA approaches, we propose a shift in the paradigm governing CIA. The paradigm shift involves a change in the focus of CIA investigations from the detailed analysis of one unlikely future to the identification of the patterns describing multiple potential future changes in the environment. To illustrate the approach, a set of 144 possible and equally likely futures were developed that aimed to identify the potential impacts of forest harvesting and petroleum drilling on the habitat suitability of moose and marten in northeast British Columbia, Canada. The evolution of two measures of habitat suitability (average habitat suitability index and surface of the stands with habitat suitability index >0.5) revealed that the human activities could induce cycles in the habitat dynamics of moose and marten. The planning period of 100 years was separated into three distinct periods following a sinusoidal pattern (i.e., increase - constant - decrease in the habitat suitability measures). The attributes that could induce significant changes in the assessment of environment are the choice of harvesting age and species.  相似文献

A great deal of attention has been paid to the selection of nature reserves. These are important from a conservation viewpoint but, for long-term evaluations, it is important to monitor ecosystems. The need for long-term monitoring plots has been recognized for some time in forest ecology. Of the natural ecosystems, forests are some of the most difficult to monitor because of the time-scales involved in the life-spans of the dominant organisms (100 1000 years). The selection of long-term forest ecosystem monitoring plots is a critical process involving decisions that need to remain valid for many years. Traditional sampling theory suggests that some form of systematic or random sampling may be appropriate, but this is usually inappropriate for the selection of ecosystem monitoring plots. Instead, the selection of plots more closely resembles some of the procedures that are used in the selection of nature reserves. In Switzerland, a monitoring programme has been established which uses a number of criteria for the selection of sites. These include site homogeneity, the abundance and sensitivity of the plant communities to change and the presence of pre-existing data series or monitoring equipment. In addition, the human factor is incorporated by selecting sites from throughout the country, with the willingness of the local forest managers to help with the project being an important factor influencing the final choice of plots. In contrast to most inventories, statistical representativeness is not a requirement for the programme, as the plots are treated as a series of case studies.  相似文献

Summary We present experimental and correlational data that demonstrate that both the nutritional state of the male and his mate's fertility affect the timing and intensity of dawn and dusk song in the blackbird (Turdus merula). Food supplementation leads to paired males singing earlier, for longer, and at higher peak rate at both dusk and dawn succeeding the treatment. We argue that the timing, not just the intensity, of song conveys information about the male's phenotypic condition. Both dawn and dusk song start earlier and have longer duration as a male's mate reaches peak fertility indicating that, in agreement with literature on the great tit (Parus major), song at this time has particular significance in mate guarding for paired males of monogamous species. We discuss the relative importance of these factors as functional explanations for the dawn chorus. Offprint requests to: I.C. Cuthill  相似文献

It is still unclear why females in many bird species pursue extra-pair copulations. Current hypotheses focus mainly on indirect benefits such as obtaining particular good genes for their offspring or maximizing genetic compatibility between themselves and the father of their offspring. Supporting the latter, a recent study of shorebirds suggests that extra-pair matings may function to avoid the negative effects of genetic similarity between mates. Here, we further investigate genetic parentage in the Kentish plover, Charadrius alexandrinus, a shorebird with a highly variable social mating system. DNA fingerprinting revealed that most pairs were genetically monogamous: 7.9% of the broods (7/89) contained extra-pair young, comprising 3.9% of all chicks (9/229). These cases represented, however, three alternative reproductive behaviors: extra-pair paternity, quasi-parasitism (extra-pair maternity) and intraspecific brood parasitism. This is the first study showing the occurrence of all three behaviors in one shorebird species. We also found that extra-pair fertilizations (extra-pair paternity and quasi-parasitism) were more frequent later in the breeding season. There was no consistent relationship between genetic similarity of mates and laying date; the pattern, as well as the degree of genetic similarity, differed among breeding sites within the study population.Communicated by M. Monitoring Sustainable Forest Management in Different Jurisdictions   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The concept of sustainable forest management (SFM) requires forest resource managers to monitor and collect information pertaining to their environmental, economic and social impact. There are increasing expectations from a variety of publics (government, customers, and other stakeholders) that forests be demonstrably well-managed, creating incentives for forest managers to design credible systems for assessing their management performance. It is against this background that local, national and international approaches to regulating forest practices have been evolving. This article reviews the different dimensions of governance as they relate to monitoring and information reporting in the forest sector. Specifically, it discusses the changing role of sovereignty, the effects of globalization and the emergence of civil society stakeholders in forestry-related decision-making. Concepts such as sovereignty and globalization have important implications for monitoring forest practices and for defining SFM. Whether SFM standard creation and enforcement involves a sovereign, shared-sovereignty or civil society approach will affect the level and nature of SFM monitoring. As a result, we need to better consider the concept of monitoring appropriate to the scale and intensity of operations, how monitoring and information reporting standards differ between jurisdictions, and what this means for independently verifying SFM at an inter-jurisdictional level.  相似文献

Interviews with Chinese forest products manufacturers were conducted to explore their attitudes towards forest certification and related issues. Participants comprised owners, CEOs, and managers in 20 Chinese wood products companies, including producers of furniture, doors, flooring, and various engineered wood products. The interviews were used to analyze the extent to which participants were considering adopting forest certification and what might motivate such a decision. This was done by assessing their awareness and knowledge of certification. The results indicated that participants' understanding of forest certification was extremely low, despite major efforts in China to raise awareness of the issue. Potential economic benefits were the most frequently cited reason to adopt certification, including gaining or maintaining competitive advantage over their industry counterparts, improved access to both domestic and export markets, better customer recognition, and enhanced corporate responsibility practices. Some interviewees (3 out of 20) considered that certification would become a mandatory requirement or industry standard, and that this would be the only viable motivation for certification given that the financial benefits were potentially limited. According to the participants, the main differences between certified and uncertified wood products operations related to improved market access and public image. Interviewees felt that cooperation between and support from governments and the forest industry would enable the enhanced awareness of certification amongst manufacturers and the general public. This, in turn, could serve to stimulate demand for certified products.  相似文献

Manipulation of sex differences in parental care   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
Summary In a species with biparental care two parents cooperate to provide the appropriate amount of care for the young. Recent theoretical treatments consider the evolutionarily stable investment strategy. Under most conditions, the parental investment of the two partners should be negatively correlated, with the shortfall of one partner being partially compensated for by the other. Previous experimental manipulations of biparental care have involved removal of one partner, yet the response of a widowed bird may differ from that of a mated bird whose partner is doing less than its fair share of parental care. We present the first data involving subtle manipulations of sex differences in parental care where both partners continue to care for the young. This study involves pairs in a nestbox colony of european starlings (Sturnus vulgaris L.) with all brood sizes manipulated to five chicks. Pairs were randomly assigned to three groups: (i) male parental care reduced; (ii) female parental care reduce; and (iii) control pairs. Parental care was manipulated by attaching small weights to the base of a bird's tail feathers. Regardless of sex, nest visitation rate was reduced in the weighted birds with an incomplete compensatory increase by their unweighted partner. Additional parental duties were also considered, including shifts in prey type delivered to the nest, in both weighted birds and their partners. The shift in diet and the overall lower total visitation rate in experimental nests contributed to slower chick growth and lower chick weights than in control nests. The data accord with models suggesting that equality of invesment in biparental species is evolutionarily stable, but reveal new dimensions of parental response that need to be taken into account in theoretical treatments.  相似文献
