Detecting anthropogenic metal contamination in regional surveys can be particularly difficult when there is a lack of pre-disturbance data, especially when trying to differentiate low to moderate levels of contamination from background values. Furthermore, comparisons with other regional studies are confounded by differing analytical methods used and variations in sediment properties such as grainsize. Several types of geochemical technique, including weak acid partial extraction, strong acid extractions and total digestion have been used. Attempts have been made to overcome the influence that grainsize has on chemical concentrations in heterogeneous environments by analysing the fines, typically the mud fraction (<63 microm), in an attempt to improve the detection of anthropogenic contamination. Here we compare a weak acid partial extraction using 1M HCl and total digestion methods for a regional survey of reference and impacted sites in Antarctica using both whole sediment (<2 mm) and mud (<63 microm) fractions. The 1M partial extraction on whole sediment (<2 mm) most closely distinguished weakly, or moderately, impacted sites from reference locations. It also identified small scale within-location spatial variation in metal contamination that the total digest did not detect. Compared with total digests or analysis of the <63 microm fraction alone, this method minimised the possibility of a Type II statistical error in the regional survey - that is, failing to identify a site as being contaminated when it has elevated metal concentrations. To allow inter-regional comparison of sediment chemistry data from elsewhere in Antarctica, and also more generally, we recommend a 1M HCl partial extraction on whole sediment (<2 mm). 相似文献

In fall of 2009, several mass strandings of Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas) occurred on Vancouver Island (49°7′60N 125°54′0W). Morphological dissections coupled with DNA barcoding of stomach contents
revealed Sardinops sagax (Pacific sardine) and Clupea pallasii (Pacific herring) as their primary prey. Plastic nurdles, fishing line, bull kelp, eelgrass, and a guillemot feather were
also discovered. The primary prey, Pacific sardines and Pacific herring, are known to bioaccumulate paralytic shellfish toxins
(PSTs); additionally, both PSTs and domoic acid (DA) have been implicated in other mass strandings. Therefore, stomach contents,
and other tissues when possible, were tested for PSTs and DA. Testing revealed DA concentrations below regulatory guidance
levels for human consumption, yet PSTs were well in excess. Though we cannot conclude that PSTs were the definitive cause

This study examined the effects of sub-lethal exposure of the ubiquitous pesticide malathion on the behavior of the model orthopteran species, the house cricket (Acheta domesticus). Increasing concentrations of malathion caused male crickets to increase periods of non-directional movement, such as twitching and grooming, directional movement, and to seek out shelter less. These are all behavioral alterations that may increase the cricket's chances of being preyed upon, and thus have the potential for serious ecological consequences through trophic transfer. This study also revealed that female crickets appeared to be less affected by malathion than their male conspecifics, indicating a potential sex-bias in both susceptibility and possible predator attack. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Kriging methods of geostatistical analysis provide valuable techniques for analysis of sediment contamination problems, including interpolation of concentration maps from point data and estimation of global mean concentrations. Sample collection efforts frequently include preliminary screening data of considerably more extensive coverage than the laboratory analyses on which estimation is usually based. How should these be incorporated in kriging? Screening and laboratory analysis constitute two separate estimates of the same spatial field but of very different characteristics. A modified version of co-kriging is developed to include the imprecise screening information in the analysis of contaminant distribution. Use of the method is demonstrated on a data set of sediment PCB samples from the Upper Hudson River, for which preliminary categorical mass spectrometry screening was used to select a smaller set of samples for gas chromatograph analysis.
