Experiments were run in a pilot scale electrostatic precipitator (ESP) to determine the effects of corona wire-to-wire spacing on the operating conditions. Tests were run, using a reentrained low sulfur fly ash at both hot- and cold-side conditions. The effects of varying wire-to-wire spacing were determined. Results are given which show that varying wire spacing at cold-side conditions has little operational effect on the ESP while improved efficiency can be obtained at hot-side (low resistivity) conditions by reducing wire spacing. The increased efficiency results from a higher average operating voltage. The effects of back ionization are clearly demonstrated by a set of experiments in which dust was selectively removed from the wires or plate. These tests show that the lower operating voltage caused by back ionization is a combined effect of high resistivity dust on both the wires and plate.  相似文献

Reproduction in marmoset and tamarin groups is typically restricted to a single dominant female, but it is unclear why subordinate females tolerate delayed reproduction. The presence of two breeding females in free-ranging groups of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) presented a unique opportunity to examine differences in the reproductive strategies of dominant and subordinate females. Three groups were monitored for 12–18 months at a forest reserve in northeastern Brazil. Data on infant care were collected during two consecutive all-day follows every 10 days until the infants were 2 months old. Carrying patterns for infants born to dominant females were similar to those observed in groups containing a single breeding female. All group members over 5 months of age participated in infant care, and dominant females allowed some group members to carry their infants from the 1 st day of life. In contrast, subordinate females were protective of their offspring and were their sole caretakers for at least a week following birth. One infant born to a subordinate was killed in an attack involving the dominant female. Overall, dominant females gave birth to more infants and had higher infant survival than did subordinate breeding females. subordinate females were successful in rearing young only when the timing of births was such that they did not overlap with the dependency period of infants born to the dominant female. These patterns suggest that subordinate females may face resource competition, especially over access to helpers. In times of severe competition, subordinate females that delay reproduction may be avoiding a wasted reproductive effort.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Geoengineering is regarded by advocates as a creative and responsible technological option in the face of a climate emergency. Critics often see it as a hubristic attempt to play God, with disastrous consequences for the planet and humanity. These antipodal perspectives are represented by the ideal types of Prometheans and Gaians. Prometheans and Gaians typically talk past each other. The geoengineering debate can be made more fruitful by well articulating their respective positions and subsequently situating them in the discourse of sustainability. A sustainability orientation does not answer the troubling question whether geoengineering should be developed and deployed. But it can foster a ‘fusion of horizons’ between Prometheans and Gaians, providing common ground in an otherwise polarized debate and making a more productive dialogue possible.  相似文献

The response of a mixed microbial culture to cyclic aerobic and anoxic (denitrifying) conditions was studied in a chemostat with a 48-hour hydraulic residence time receiving a feed containing benzoate and pyruvate. When the cyclic conditions were 3-hour aerobic and 9-hour anoxic, the bacteria-degraded benzoate aerobically via the catechol 2,3-dioxygenase (C23DO) pathway. The quantity of C23DO remained constant throughout the anoxic period but decreased during the initial portion of the aerobic period before returning to the level present in the anoxic period. Anoxic biodegradation of benzoate was via benzoyl-CoA reductase, which remained constant regardless of the redox condition. The aerobic benzoate uptake capability (AeBUC) of the culture increased during the aerobic period but decreased during the anoxic period. The anoxic benzoate uptake capability (AnBUC) exhibited the opposite response. When the cycle was 6-hour aerobic and 6-hour anoxic, aerobic biodegradation of benzoate proceeded via the protocatechuate 4,5-dioxygenase (P45DO) pathway. The P45DO activity decreased early in the aerobic period, but then increased to the level present during the anoxic period. The level of benzoyl-CoA reductase was constant throughout the cycle. Furthermore, AeBUC and AnBUC responded in much the same way as in the 3/9-hour chemostat. During a 9-hour aerobic and 3-hour anoxic cycle, the culture synthesized both P45DO and C23DO, with the former having significantly higher activity. Unlike the other two cycles, AeBUC changed little during the aerobic period, although AnBUC decreased. The culture was well-adapted to the cyclic conditions as evidenced by the lack of accumulation of either substrate during any cycle tested. This suggests that cyclic aerobic-anoxic processes can be used in industrial wastewater-treatment facilities receiving significant quantities of simple aromatic compounds like benzoate. However, the results showed that the kinetics of benzoate degradation were different under aerobic and anoxic conditions, a situation that must be considered when modeling cyclic bioreactors receiving aromatic compounds.  相似文献

The blood feeding vampire bats emerged from New World leaf-nosed bats that fed on fruit and insects. Plasminogen activator, a serine protease that regulates blood coagulation, is known to be expressed in the saliva of Desmodus rotundus (common vampire bat) and is thought to be a key enzyme for the emergence of blood feeding in vampire bats. To better understand the evolution of this biological function, we studied the plasminogen activator (PA) genes from all vampire bat species in light of their feeding transition to bird and subsequently mammalian blood. We include the rare species Diphylla ecaudata and Diaemus youngi, where plasminogen activator had not previously been studied and demonstrate that PA gene duplication observed in Desmodus is not essential to the vampire phenotype, but relates to the emergence of predominant mammalian blood feeding in this species. Plasminogen activator has evolved through gene duplication, domain loss, and sequence evolution leading to change in fibrin-specificity and susceptibility to plasminogen activator inhibitor-1. Before undertaking this study, only the four plasminogen activator isoforms from Desmodus were known. The evolution of vampire bat plasminogen activators can now be linked phylogenetically to the transition in feeding behavior among vampire bat species from bird to mammalian blood. An aerobic fixed film biological treatment system has been successfully treating recovered groundwater/landfill leachate containing 1,4‐dioxane, tetrahydrofuran (THF), and other constituents since 2003. The most likely mode of 1,4‐dioxane biotransformation is via a cometabolic pathway in the presence of THF. Pilot studies conducted during the process development phase established a design basis process loading factor of 0.6 g 1,4‐dioxane and THF (as chemical oxygen demand [COD])/g total solids per day and proved the efficacy of the process. Full‐scale design includes the use of three parallel moving bed bioreactors with effluent recycle capability. Removal efficiencies in excess of 98 percent have been documented for 1,4‐dioxane. Evolving operational challenges are associated with recent trends in 1,4‐dioxane pretreatment discharge limitations in combination with ongoing process optimization and increased influent flow rate conditions associated with seasonal precipitation patterns. ©2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献
