Flexible polyurethane foams were prepared using naturally derived materials as alternatives to conventional auxiliary blowing agents. This research was based on the concept held by some that natural chemicals are better as a part of industrial ecology. The authors have attempted to define the foam manufacturing suitability of natural chemicals, but have not defined or defended the policy implications of such choices. Natural chemicals are often less suitable than those refined from petroleum and may then need some environmental credit related to greater discharge to be viable substitutes. Modest decreases in density (relative to foams without any auxiliary blowing agent) were obtained with the addition of solid CO2 but other physical properties were not measured. It is unclear whether the reduction in density is a result of the phase change of CO, from solid to liquid within the polyurethane cell matrix or simply a bubbling effect of C02 in solution causing voids within the final product. Although it was anticipated that the high boiling point of limonene, from citrus peeis, would negate effectiveness as an auxiliary blowing agent, there were analogous decreases in foam density. The observed effect might be rationalized by the significant vapor pressure of limonene at temperatures lower than the boiling point. The limonene may be sweptf rom the foam system coincident with the loss of in situ generated CO2 isoprene, naturally emitted from deciduous vegetation as well as from the combustion of carbonaceous fuels, provides a useful, if not complete, range of foam densities and may then be a partial substitute for halogenated auxiliary blowing agents. Switching from methyiene chloride to isoprene as the auxiliary blowing agent of choice would immediately decrease organic emissions from polyurethane foam plants by 20 percent (molecular weight effect). Regulation as a VOC and the residual acrid odor may be potential drawbacks to commercial utilization of isoprene.  相似文献

TSI Inc. (Shoreview, MN) has introduced three new water-based condensation particle counters (WCPCS) that were designed to detect airborne particles larger than 2.5 nm (model 3786), 5 nm (model 3785), and either 10 or 20 nm (model 3782). These WCPCs are well suited for real-time, environmental monitoring of number concentration of airborne ultrafine particles. Their unique design incorporates the use of water as the working fluid instead of alcohol. Water is odor free, readily available, and eliminates the problem of water condensation and absorption into alcohol working fluids during operation in humid environments. In this study, the performance of three TSI WCPCs was characterized for several aerosol compositions, including sucrose, salt (NaCl), dioctyl sebacate (DOS), dioctyl phthalate (DOP), emery oil (poly-alpha-olefin), silver, impurity residue particles, and ambient aerosol particles. All particles were size selected using a nano differential mobility analyzer (nano-DMA; model 3085, TSI Inc.) to create monodisperse challenge aerosols. The challenge aerosol was mixed uniformly with clean makeup flow and split into a WCPC and a reference instrument to determine the counting efficiency of the WCPC. For the model 3785 WCPC, the D50 (i.e., the particle diameter with 50% counting efficiency) was determined to be 3.1 nm for salt particles, 4.7 nm for sucrose and ambient particles, 5.6 nm for silver particles, and >50 nm for ultrapure oil particles. The sensitivity to oil droplets increased dramatically (D50 < 10 nm) when the oil was slightly contaminated. The D50 of model 3786 ultrafine water-based CPC (UWCPC) was 2.4 nm for impurity residue particles. The D50 of the model 3782 WCPC was 10.8 (with a nominal setting of 10 nm) or 19.8 nm (with a nominal setting of 20 nm) for sucrose particles. All three WCPCs have response times of less than 2 or 3 sec and are therefore able to detect fast-changing events.  相似文献

We studied the effect of an industrial effluent on the water quality, habitat quality, and benthic macroinvertebrates of an urban stream in southwestern Michigan (USA). The effluent affected water quality by raising in-stream temperatures 13-18 degree C during colder months and carrying high amounts of iron (> 20 x higher than ambient) that covered the streambed. The effluent also affected habitat conditions by increasing total stream discharge by 50-150%, causing a significant change in substrate and flow conditions. We used three methods to collect benthic macroinvertebrates in depositional and erosional habitats and to understand the relative importance of habitat quality and water quality alterations. Macroinvertebrate response variables included taxonomic richness, abundance, and proportional abundance of sensitive taxonomic groups. Results indicated that the effluent had a positive effect on macroinvertebrate communities by increasing the quantity of riffle habitat, but a negative effect on macroinvertebrate communities by reducing water quality. Results illustrated the need for careful consideration of habitat quality and water quality in restoration or remediation programs.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: The occurrence of dissolved heavy metal concentrations in shallow ground water were measured at 126 sites within an urban watershed in southeastern Michigan. A total of 1,140 samples were collected from the first saturated zone, and the mean concentrations of 11 heavy metals (arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, silver, and zinc) were obtained and compared to their corresponding mean concentrations within surface soil. The results suggest that former and current land use processes have resulted in significant adverse impacts on the study region. Levels of Cr 20 to 30 times the maximum contaminant level (MCL) have been detected in the ground water beneath industrial sites. In addition, Cd and Pb have been found at levels exceeding their MCLs where surface soils are clay‐rich, and in sandy soils at more than 10 times their MCLs. The high levels of Cr in ground water strongly suggest that the chromium is in a hexavalent form, and this likelihood is supported by current studies. Given the hydraulic connection between the watershed's surface waters and the Great Lakes, these findings raise significant ecological and public health concerns.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: A model is developed and tested to identify the factors influencing variation in community response to stormwater pollution. Basic constructs of the model use environmental hazard theory, integrated with analysis of community demographic and political forces affecting local government decision processes. Community stormwater response is measured by an index comprised of 12 response indicators. Selection criteria for the response indicators include their effectiveness, variability, and general representation of the spectrum of stormwater response activity. Observable activities are scored progressively based upon their relative ecosystem impacts. Weighted and unweighted indicator scores are computed, with a survey of stormwater experts providing the basis for the weights. Results indicate a wide variation in response levels among the selected communities. Regression analysis identifies four significant predictors of response at the watershed scale: the mean age of householder over 25, the total tax rate, community type (city or township), and the amount of green staff (presence of recycling coordinators, foresters, or environmental planners). This mix of predictors demonstrates the applicability of hazard theory to stormwater response, as community stormwater response is influenced by the capacity and economic means to effect change - two central constructs of hazard theory.  相似文献

An environmental evaluation was performed at 16 subdivision sites within four communities in east-central Michigan. The primary objective was to evaluate the fit between environmental ordinances and the physical/environmental conditions to which they were applied. An environmental response index was developed with indicators to assess water, soil, slope, development density, roads, vegetation, and ecology. Water-related indicators achieved the highest scores, while soil-related indicators scored the poorest, with generally poor performance across all indicators. The poor performance indicates there are problems in the ability of environmental ordinances developed at broader jurisdictional scales (e.g., the state) to address the existing environmental conditions at smaller geographic scales (subdivisions within communities). Two key problems include the lack of scientific specificity in the broader state-level ordinances and the lack of local expertise and/or resources to monitor the environment.  相似文献

We develop an integrated framework for evaluating sequential greenhouse gas abatement policies under uncertainty. The analysis integrates information concerning the magnitude, timing, and impacts of climate change with data on the likely effectiveness and cost of possible response options. Reduced-scale representations of the global climate system, drawn from the MIT Integrated Global System Model, form the empirical basis of the analysis. The method is illustrated in application to emissions control policies of the form considered under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.  相似文献

Understanding the dynamics of population recovery is particularly complex when an organism has multiple, remote breeding and feeding grounds separated by one of the longest known migration routes. This study reports on the most comprehensive assessment of humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) movements between remote Antarctic waters south of New Zealand and east Australia (EA), and the migratory corridors and breeding grounds of Australia and Oceania. A total of 112 individual whales were identified; 57 from microsatellites and 61 by fluke with 23 % (n = 26) matched to sites outside Antarctica. Despite large datasets from other southern regions being included in the comparison, the whales were predominantly linked to EA (n = 24). Only two matches to the Oceania catalogues directly north was surprising; therefore the primary feeding grounds of these endangered whales still remain unknown. The confirmation of the Balleny Islands as an important feeding ground for EA whales could provide an insight into reasons behind the rapid recovery of this population. Determining the feeding grounds of Oceania’s whales may explain whether prey energetics or migration length are limiting factors to their recovery and will allow an understanding of future ecosystem changes in these whales.  相似文献
