Rarely have researchers explored the association between place meaning and place attachment. The spatial relationship between the concentration and deposition of the major ions in precipitation and stemflow and their influence on the tissue nitrogen concentration of three epiphytic bryophytes on Quercus petraea (Matt) Liebl. and Q. robur L. was investigated at seven UK Atlantic oak woodland sites with a range of total N deposition of 55-250mmolm(-2). The main driver of change in tissue N concentrations of three epiphytic bryophytes (Isothecium myosuroides Brid. (Eurhynchium myosuroides (Brid.) Schp.), Dicranum scoparium Hewd. and Thuidium tamariscinum (Hewd.) Schimp.) was total N deposition in stemflow, dominated by ammonium deposition. The three epiphytic species also showed strong relationships between tissue N concentration and total N deposition in rainfall but a poor correlation with total N ion concentration in rainfall. This study shows that epiphytic bryophytes utilise stemflow N and thus increase their risk from inputs of total N deposition compared to terricolous species at the same site.  相似文献

Canals and canalized rivers form a major part of surface water systems in European delta cities and societal ambitions to use these waters increase. This is the first assessment of how suitability of these waters can improve for three important uses: transportation, thermal energy extraction (TEE) and recreation. We assess suitability with Suitability Indices (SIs) and identify which alterations in the water system are needed to improve SI scores in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and Ghent, Belgium. The results show spatial variability in suitability scores. Current suitability for transportation is low (SI score = 1) to excellent (SI score = 4), for TEE fair (SI score = 2) to excellent (SI score = 4), and suitability for recreation is low (SI score = 1). Suitability could improve by enlarging specific waterway dimensions, increasing discharge and clarity, and by enhancing microbiological water quality. Increased levels of nitrate occur in natural waters due to pollution, and in aquaculture systems from nitrification and addition of microalgal cultures for feeding. Static bioassays showed that significant mortality of larvalPenaeus monodon (Fabricius) occurred within 40 h at nitrate concentrations as low as 1 mg NO 3 - l–1. Sublethal effects of this concentration resulted in changes to ganglionic neuropiles and muscles. At higher concentrations (10 and 100 mg NO 3 - l–1), additional tissues were affected including the hypodermis, midgut and proventriculus. This is the first report of toxicity to a marine organism of nitrate at concentrations normally present in enclosed seawater and mariculture systems. The results are discussed in terms of management of culture systems and of natural marine ecosystems containing elevated levels of nitrate.  相似文献

Ammonia emissions (NH3) are characterised by a high spatial variability at a local scale. When modelling the spatial distribution of NH3 emissions, it is important to provide robust emission estimates, since the model output is used to assess potential environmental impacts, e.g. exceedance of critical loads. The aim of this study was to provide a new, updated spatial NH3 emission inventory for the UK for the year 2000, based on an improved modelling approach and the use of updated input datasets. The AENEID model distributes NH3 emissions from a range of agricultural activities, such as grazing and housing of livestock, storage and spreading of manures, and fertilizer application, at a 1-km grid resolution over the most suitable landcover types. The results of the emission calculation for the year 2000 are analysed and the methodology is compared with a previous spatial emission inventory for 1996.  相似文献

Effects of 11 years (1978-1988) of nutrient enrichment (fertilizer or sludge) on microbial metabolic activity in soil samples collected from contrasting types of old-field communities were studied during September 1989. During the 1989 growing season, subplots were manipulated by tilling and/or liming to evaluate mechanisms of ecosystem recovery or were left undisturbed. Metabolic activities of soil microorganisms were determined by measuring dehydrogenase activity within soil samples collected from these subplots. The amounts of 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium formazan formed during incubation by the reduction of 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride were used to evaluate dehydrogenase activity. Plots that had received long-term applications of sludge or fertilizer had significantly lower rates of microbial activity (P<0.05) than did control plots. Fertilizer and sludge plots treated with lime had significantly higher microbial metabolic activity (P<0.05) than those not receiving lime. Whereas liming stimulated microbial activity to near control levels, tilling had no significant treatment effect.  相似文献

A continuous relaxed eddy accumulation system ispresented for the automated measurement of surface/atmosphere exchange fluxes of atmospheric ammonia (NH3) at a single height. The new system features sampling by parallel plate denuder inlets, online chemical analysis using the conductivity cell of a commercially available NH3 analyzer and online flux calculation. The effective detection limit of the system for air concentrations is 0.2 g m-3 and it is estimated to resolve fluxes > ± 20 ng m-2 s-1, depending on the NH3 concentration and turbulence. The performance of the system was tested in two measurement campaigns above agricultural grassland, in which it was compared with a 3-point continuous gradient system. During the first campaign, after urea application of 47 kg N ha-1 in autumn, the REA system derived fluxes which were on average twice as large as the gradient fluxes, while concentrations agreed closely (on average within 4%). Possible reasons include differences in the footprint and an over-correction of the gradient flux in stable conditions. Due to wet and cold conditions, only 0.3% of the fertilizer N was volatilized as NH3 during the first week. Results from the deployment of an improved system are presented for a summer day, 6 days after fertilization with calcium ammonium nitrate. The agreement of both concentrations (on average within 13%) and fluxes (26%) was very encouraging and similar to the agreement found between two state-of-the-art gradient systems with online analysis.  相似文献
