The caterpillars of Eucheira socialis westwoodi cooperatively spin and maintain a hollow silken nest and an elaborate network of silken foraging trails on their host plant, madrone (Arbutus spp.: Ericaceae). Nests typically contain several hundred larvae. Two populations are known to harbor a sex ratio distorter. The primary sex ratio in these two populations for four generations has been exceedingly male biased (64–79% male). Lepidoptera larvae are easily sexed using external morphology, allowing us to uniquely mark male and female larvae and to assemble larval groups of particular sex ratios. We report here the results of experiments on sex-specific larval behavior and physiology and the effect of colony sex ratio on individual behavior. We found that male larvae spent more time spinning silk on the nest and less time feeding than female larvae. Males were the first to emerge from the nest and the first to venture out along trails to feed. Male-biased nests had a significantly greater amount of silk deposited on their surfaces than female-biased nests. In the field, male-biased nests produced heavier male and female pupae than female-biased nests. Male and female larvae in 75% male nests became active earlier than males and females in other sex ratio treatments. Rates of methane emission from a Swedish landfill, measured by chamber technique and permanent frames, ranged between 0.034 and 20 mmol CH4m−2. h−1on average. The emissions followed a seasonal pattern, with the highest fluxes occurring between September and May. Methane concentrations in soil also followed a seasonal pattern, with a marked decrease during summers. Using the means of methane emission rates from frost-free periods, a stepwise regression model was made, that could explain 95% of the variation. Soil temperature turned out to be the dominating factor, explaining 85% when transformed to a second-degree function. Methane emissions were negatively correlated with soil temperature, which strongly suggests that biological methane oxidation is an important regulating factor. The activity of methane-oxidizing microorganisms was greatest around 0.5–0.6 m depth in the soil profile, and moisture at this level enhanced emissions. The tendency for methane emissions to be higher at night was probably due to the inhibitory influence of low soil temperatures on methane-oxidizing microorganisms.  相似文献

Source and sink processes of phosgene (COCl2) in the troposphere are reviewed. Sources are identified as decomposition of chlorinated hydrocarbons in both troposphere and stratosphere, which can be expected to increase in the future. Sinks are dry deposition and hydrolysis which, within clouds, is of the time scale of hours, and photolysis, which will not be of importance in the troposphere. Though above the cloud layer the lifetime of phosgene is expected to be greater than 10 years, hydrolysis during the transit through clouds and dry deposition will be the dominant sink, leading to an estimated residence time of approximately a few days.  相似文献

The increase in volumes of waste, and the difficulties of finding suitable locations for landfill sites within the borders of Copenhagen municipality, along with the need for treatment of oil and chemical waste, resulted in the erection in the early 1970s of two large waste-to-energy plants and a large centralized plant for the treatment of oil and chemical waste. Ten years later, however, it became evident that the then structure was not sufficient to face rapidly emerging problems. A number of pollution cases in Denmark which emerged during the early 1980s, proved that oil and chemical waste was being transported illegally to landfills instead of being disposed of in compliance with the obligatory system, thus becoming a threat to groundwater and drinking water supplies in Copenhagen. At the same time, waste-to-energy plants were facing pollution problems such as the emission of dioxin and large quantities of hydrochloric acid, which contribute to acidification and forest death.As a response to the increasing problems in relation to both waste incineration and deposits, new regulations from the Ministry of the Environment allowed future sanitary landfills to be located only near the coast or in areas documented to be composed of an impermeable layer of clay. New regulation also defined conditions for flue gas cleansing. However, it was clear that pollution problems combined with increases in volumes of waste called for a much firmer administration and a stronger influence on the waste flow. From February 1989 the municipalities have undertaken the obligation to assign all waste producers the means to dispose of their waste. How Copenhagen municipality has solved the problems is discussed.  相似文献

Deep learning (DL) models are increasingly used to make accurate hindcasts of management-relevant variables, but they are less commonly used in forecasting applications. Data assimilation (DA) can be used for forecasts to leverage real-time observations, where the difference between model predictions and observations today is used to adjust the model to make better predictions tomorrow. In this use case, we developed a process-guided DL and DA approach to make 7-day probabilistic forecasts of daily maximum water temperature in the Delaware River Basin in support of water management decisions. Our modeling system produced forecasts of daily maximum water temperature with an average root mean squared error (RMSE) from 1.1 to 1.4°C for 1-day-ahead and 1.4 to 1.9°C for 7-day-ahead forecasts across all sites. The DA algorithm marginally improved forecast performance when compared with forecasts produced using the process-guided DL model alone (0%–14% lower RMSE with the DA algorithm). Across all sites and lead times, 65%–82% of observations were within 90% forecast confidence intervals, which allowed managers to anticipate probability of exceedances of ecologically relevant thresholds and aid in decisions about releasing reservoir water downstream. The flexibility of DL models shows promise for forecasting other important environmental variables and aid in decision-making.  相似文献

Assisted migration (AM) is the translocation of species beyond their historical range to locations that are expected to be more suitable under future climate change. However, a relocated population may fail to establish in its donor community if there is high uncertainty in decision-making, climate, and interactions with the recipient ecological community. To quantify the benefit to persistence and risk of establishment failure of AM under different management scenarios (e.g., choosing target species, proportion of population to relocate, and optimal location to relocate), we built a stochastic metacommunity model to simulate several species reproducing, dispersing, and competing on a temperature gradient as temperature increases over time. Without AM, the species were vulnerable to climate change when they had low population sizes, short dispersal, and strong poleward competition. When relocating species that exemplified these traits, AM increased the long-term persistence of the species most when relocating a fraction of the donor population, even if the remaining population was very small or rapidly declining. This suggests that leaving behind a fraction of the population could be a robust approach, allowing managers to repeat AM in case they move the species to the wrong place and at the wrong time, especially when it is difficult to identify a species’ optimal climate. We found that AM most benefitted species with low dispersal ability and least benefited species with narrow thermal tolerances, for which AM increased extinction risk on average. Although relocation did not affect the persistence of nontarget species in our simple competitive model, researchers will need to consider a more complete set of community interactions to comprehensively understand invasion potential.  相似文献

The herbicide propanil, a synthetic anilide, was discovered in 1957 to control grasses and broad-leaf weeds in rice fields. It has been found to disrupt the electron transport chain by inhibiting the photosystem II, thus impacting plant growth. In the environment, photolysis represents a major degradation pathway, whereas volatilization is not a major route of dissipation from either water or moist soils. Propanil is rapidly degraded by microbes into the major degradation product 3,4-dichloroaniline. This degradation product has been highly detected in both groundwater and surface waters throughout the world. Propanil has been found to adversely impact many non-target organisms. It is toxic to some early life-stage aquatic organisms, in addition to being moderately toxic to the water flea (Ceriodaphnia dubia) and rainbow trout. In addition, it has been reported to pose a high acute and long-term risk to birds. In plants, growth rates are highly impacted; however, some plant species are becoming resistant to propanil.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the prediction of mass and momentum transport in turbulent wall jets developing over smooth and transitionally rough plane walls. The ability to accurately predict the resulting wall shear stresses and vertical profiles of the Reynolds stresses in these flows is prerequisite to the accurate prediction of bed scour, sediment re-suspension and transport by turbulent diffusion. The computations were performed by solving the Reynolds-averaged forms of the equations describing conservation of mass, momentum and concentration. The unknown correlations that arise from the averaging process (the Reynolds stresses in the case of the momentum equation, and the turbulent mass fluxes in the case of concentration) were obtained from the solution of modeled differential equations that describe their conservation. Since these models are somewhat more complex than those typically used in practice, their benefits are demonstrated by comparisons with results obtained from simpler, eddy-viscosity based closures. Comparisons with experimental data show that results of acceptable accuracy can be obtained only by using the appropriate combination of models for the turbulent fluxes of mass and momentum that properly account for the reduction of the Reynolds stresses due to wall damping effects, and for the modification of the mass transfer rates due to interactions with the mean rates of strain.  相似文献

Not as much abatement as has been presumed. Smog check programs aim to curb tailpipe emissions from in-use vehicles by requiring repairs whenever emissions, measured at regular time intervals, exceed a certain threshold. Using data from California, we estimate that on average 41% of the initial emissions abatement from repairs is lost by the time of the subsequent inspection, normally two years later. Our estimates imply that the cost per pound of pollution avoided is an order of magnitude greater for smog check repairs than alternative policies such as new-vehicle standards or emissions trading among industrial point sources.  相似文献
