Summary Paternity determination by oligonucleotide fingerprinting confirms that maternal rank affects the reproductive success of male Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus). High-born males began to reproduce significantly earlier and sired significantly more infants surviving to at least 1 year of age during the first 4 years of their reproductive career than low-born males. This relation was independent of the natal/non-natal status of the males, and was not affected by external conditions such as the level of intrasexual competition or the number of fertilizable females. Since high-ranking females in this population produced significantly more male offspring than low-ranking females, the data on sex ratio adjustment and comparative breeding success of sons and daughters are consistent with the predictions of the Trivers-Willard hypothesis. We test the hypothesis that echolocation behavior can be used to find the border between bat habitats. Assuming that bats react to background targets in “edge space” but not in “open space”, we determined the border between these two habitat types for commuting individuals of the parti-colored bat Vespertilio murinus. We recorded sequences of bats’ echolocation signals while they flew parallel to the walls of large buildings and to the ground and determined the signals’ average bandwidth, duration, and pulse interval. These parameters varied systematically with the estimated horizontal and vertical distances between the bats and the background. A distinct effect of horizontal distance to the background on echolocation behavior was found for horizontal distances of less than 6 m, thus indicating the border between edge and open space. Only a few bats flew at vertical distances below 5 m. However, enough passages at vertical distances of 5 m and above indicated that the vertical border is somewhere below a distance of 5 m. Within edge space, V. murinus reacted to the background by reducing signal duration, increasing bandwidth at closer distances, and often emitting one signal per wing beat. In open space, signal parameters did not vary as a function of distance to the background. There, V. murinus emitted the longest signals with the narrowest bandwidth and often made one or two wing beats without emitting a pulse. With our data we support with statistical methods the hypothesis that echolocation behavior reveals the border between the habitat types “edge” and “open space”.  相似文献

Low temperature limits the rate of biochemical reactions and aerobic scopes of cold water ectotherms. To compensate for this limiting effect, animals living in cold environments often possess physiological or morphological adaptations to maintain vital functions. Cross-latitudinal comparison of aerobic capacities is one method to test which factors constrain activity in thermally distinct environments particularly when congeneric studies are carried out on related species with conservative ecology and habitat. Burrowing is a major aerobic activity of bivalve molluscs that is described here for the first time for the tropical mangrove species Laternula truncata and Laternula boschasina and then compared with their Antarctic congener Laternula elliptica. About 80% of L. truncata (16.3–46.1 mm shell length) and 63% of L. boschasina (11.3–27.7 mm shell length) buried within 24 h at 28°C. The burrowing rate index (BRI = [3√wet weight/time to bury]×104) ranged between 1.1 and 20.2 for L. boschasina and 1.1–32.9 for L. truncata. These values are 2–3 orders of magnitude less than other tropical bivalve molluscs and are amongst the lowest recorded for any bivalve. Comparisons with the Antarctic L. elliptica showed little or no differences in BRI (Q 10 of 1.0–1.2 for specimens of the same size). This is contrary to the general pattern over a wide range of bivalves, where BRI increases with a Q 10 of between 2.9 and 6.4 between high latitudes and the equator. L. elliptica has 25–30% longer relative foot length than tropical congeners of the same size, which could be a morphological adaptation compensating for reduced burrowing speeds in a colder environment. Burrowing rates within the genus Laternula could, however, also be maintained by differing habitat, ecological and physiological constraints on burrowing capability.  相似文献

The epibenthic megafauna of the high-Arctic Northeast Greenland shelf was investigated by means of seafloor photography and Agassiz trawl catches. At 54 stations in water depths between 40 and 770 m, sequences of color slides, each depicting about 1 m2 of the seafloor, were obtained along photographic transects of about 100 to 600 m length. The photographs were quantitatively analyzed for abundance of epibenthic organisms identified by comparison with specimens collected from trawl catches. Megabenthic biomass was estimated by multiplying density values with averge body mass figures. For five dominant brittle star species, the population oxygen uptake and, thus, organic carbon mineralization potential were approximated by applying individual respiration rates of average-sized specimens to density figures. Multivariate analyses of the megabenthic species distribution revealed a distinct depth zonation. Shallow shelf banks (<150 m), characterized by coarse sediments, many stones and boulders as well as negative bottom water temperatures, housed a rich epifauna (30 to 340 ind m–2, 1.8 to 10.5 g AFDW m–2), strongly dominated (80 to 98% by numbers) by the brittle stars Ophiocten sericeum and Ophiura robusta. The oxygen uptake by brittle stars ranged from 0.4 to 95 mol O2 m–2 h–1 (i.e., assuming a respiratory quotient of 0.8, an organic carbon mineralization of 0.1 to 21.9 mg C m–2 d–1). At the bank flanks sloping to the shelf troughs (100 to 580 m), finer sediments prevailed, stones were rare, and bottom water temperatures were positive due to the inflow of Atlantic water. Compared to bank sites, total epibenthic abundances as well as carbon mineralization by brittle stars were roughly ten times and total biomass about four times smaller. In deep shelf depressions as well as at the continental slope (200 to 770 m), stones were completely lacking, and sediments very fine. Epibenthic standing stock and carbon mineralization were one to two orders of magnitude lower than on the banks. The estimation of brittle star oxygen uptake indicates that a considerable portion of the organic carbon produced in the polynya and partitioned to the benthos may be remineralized by epibenthic bank assemblages.  相似文献

The complete life cycle of Pycnogonum litorale Ström was observed under laboratory conditions. At 15?°C and a 16?h light:8?h dark photocycle, the duration of embryonic development from oviposition to egg-hatching varied from 32 to 111?d. The onset of egg hatching ranged from 32 to 81?d after oviposition in different egg batches, and the period between the first and the last hatch within a single egg batch varied between 16 and 57?d. The larval period, consisting of five larval instars, lasted between 66 and 113?d. Juvenile development required seven (exceptionally 8 or 9) moults and lasted between 263 and 400?d. The average interval between successive moults in juveniles increased with increasing size from 24 to 82?d. Though females did not moult more often than their male conspecifics, they reached a size from 8.5 to 11.0?mm (average 10.1?mm) while adult males measured only 7.0 to 8.5?mm (average 7.7?mm). At low temperatures (2?°C) moulting was almost completely inhibited. After raising the temperature to 6?°C, the moulting frequency increased to a rate almost as high as at a constant temperature of 15?°C. Moulting was also retarded by starvation and accelerated by subsequent feeding. Adults lived for up to 9?years without further moults, with several periods of mating and oviposition at irregular intervals. In combination with previous long-term field observations, the present results provide a more complete picture of the life cycle of P. litorale in a natural habitat. The great variation in the duration of the different developmental stages, the ability to survive periods of cold and starvation, and the longevity of the adults are important for the survival of pycnogonid populations under changing environmental conditions.  相似文献

Eusociality in mammals is defined in the present paper by the following criteria: reproductive altruism (which involves reproductive division of labor and cooperative alloparental brood care), overlap of adult generations, and permanent (lifelong) philopatry. We argue that additional criteria such as the existence of castes, colony size, reproductive skew, and social cohesion are not pertinent to the definition of eusociality in mammals. According to our definition of mammalian eusociality, several rodent species of the African family Bathyergidae can be considered eusocial, including the naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber), Damaraland mole-rat (Cryptomys damarensis), and several additional, if not all, species in the genus Cryptomys. Furthermore, some species of social voles (like Microtus ochrogaster) may also fulfill criteria of mammalian eusociality. Understanding the evolution of eusociality in mole-rats requires answers to two primary questions: (1) What are the preconditions for the development of their eusocial systems? (2) Why do offspring remain in the natal group rather than dispersing and reproducing? Eusociality in mammals is by definition a special case of monogamy (more specifically: monogyny one female breeding), involving prolonged pair bonding for more than one breeding period. We argue that eusociality in mole-rats evolved from a monogamous mating system where cooperative brood care was already established. A tendency for group living is considered to be an ancestral (plesiomorph) trait among African bathyergid mole-rats, linking them to other hystricognath rodents. A solitary lifestyle seen in some genera, such as Bathyergus, Georychus, and Heliophobius, is assumed to be a derived trait that arose independently in different lineages of bathyergids, possibly as a consequence of selective constraints associated with the subterranean environment. In proximate terms, in eusocial mole-rats either puberty is assumed to be developmentally delayed so that under natural conditions most animals die before dispersal is triggered (e.g., in the case of Heterocephalus) or dispersal is induced only by an incidental encounter with an unfamiliar, yet adequate sexual partner (e.g., in the case of Cryptomys). Ultimately, a combination of strategies involving either dispersal and/or philopatry can be beneficial, especially in a highly unpredictable environment. If genetic relatedness among siblings is high (e.g., a coefficient of relatedness of 0.5 or more), then philopatry would not invoke an appreciable loss of fitness, especially if the cost of dispersing is higher than staying within the natal group. High genetic relatedness is more likely in a monogamous mating system or a highly inbred population. In this paper, we argue that the preconditions for eusociality in bathyergid mole-rats were a monogamous mating system and high genetic relatedness among individuals. We argue against the aridity food-distribution hypothesis (AFDH) that suggests a causal relationship between cooperative foraging for patchily distributed resources and the origin of eusociality. The AFDH may explain group size dynamics of social mole-rats as a function of the distribution and availability of resources but it is inadequate to explain the formation of eusocial societies of mole-rats, especially with respect to providing preconditions conducive for the emergence of eusociality.  相似文献

Reduction of Cr(VI) by peat and coal humic substances   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The reduction of Cr(VI) by humic substances from leonardite and peat was investigated by capillary zone electrophoresis at various pHs. Both humic materials reduced Cr(VI) at pH 5.4, but not at basic pH. The capacity of leonardite humic substances to reduce Cr(VI) was lower than that of peat humic substances. Fe(III) accelerated the reduction of Cr(VI) by peat humic substances, but not by leonardite humic substances. Cr(VI) reduction mechanisms are proposed. The coal humic substances seem more suitable for remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated sites.  相似文献

Activities and characteristics of two metabolic key enzymes, citrate synthase (CS) and pyruvate kinase (PK), were studied in the Northern krill, Meganyctiphanes norvegica, with respect to adaptive properties under different thermal conditions. Krill were sampled during late winter/spring and summer from the constantly warm Ligurian Sea (12-13°C below the thermocline), the colder but also comparatively constant Clyde Sea (7-8°C), and the variable Kattegat (2-16°C). Both enzymes showed distinct tissue- and organ-specific activities, which were highest in the pleopods - the principal locomotive organs. The fourth and fifth abdominal segments, however, were used for routine investigation due to lowest variability. Specific activity of CS and PK did not differ between seasons in krill from the Kattegat or the Clyde Sea. In the Ligurian Sea, in contrast, specific CS activities were significantly lower during summer. Analysis of individual data illustrated a decrease of CS activity with size and an increase of PK activity with size. Taking these allometric effects into account, as emphasized by calculating the ratio between both enzymes, variation of CS and PK activities turned out to be solely dependent on body size, which differed between locations and seasons. Ligurian krill from the summer, however, were unique in that they showed a lower CS/PK ratio than would be predicted by the scaling effect. Thermal characteristics of each enzyme were similar between locations and seasons. During the winter, in Kattegat and Clyde Sea krill, Km values (Michaelis-Menten constant) of CS towards acetyl-coenzyme A exhibited an almost constant level over the experimental temperature range of 4-16°C. During summer, however, Km values were lower at 8°C in the Clyde Sea and at 12°C in the Kattegat. In Ligurian krill from the summer, Km values were consistently lower than those of winter krill over the entire experimental temperature range. In conclusion, Kattegat and Clyde Sea krill show only minor adaptations to their respective thermal environments in terms of CS and PK characteristics. Ligurian krill, in contrast, exhibited decreased specific CS activity during summer, which might be compensated by elevated enzyme-substrate affinity as indicated by lower Km values. Since temperature was constant during both seasons, this effect cannot be explained as a reaction to thermal conditions. Consequently, oligotrophic conditions in the Ligurian Sea during summer may entail a reduction in the somatic performance of krill, which is reflected by lower CS activity.  相似文献

The Red Sea nudibranch Hexabranchus sanguineus, rare in this region, was found in the Gulf of Aqaba together with a pair of commensal shrimp, Periclimenes imperator. The behaviour of the shrimp, especially as regards their adaptation to the host, was studied in the field and in an aquarium. The shrimp live on the sea slug, feeding on particles adhering to its mucous surface; they move on it even when it is swimming. The shrimp's colour is well adapted to that of the host. The observed specimens never left a healthy host willingly; when, in aquarium experiments, various red substrates or mucous sea cucumbers were offered beside H. sanguineus, the shrimp always chose the nudibranch. However, dead or injured and motionless slugs were abandoned. Two days after the death of a nudibranch, its commensal shrimp accepted the brown synaptid Euapta godeffroyi as host; on a previous occasion, a shrimp was found living on this latier species in the reef. The adaptation of P. imperator to living on the temporarily free-swimming H. sanguineus apparently represents a special evolutionary stage compared with that of other members of this family, which are mostly commensal with sessile hosts. Only palaemonid cleaner-shrimps feed briefly from free-swimming substrates.

Summary Homing pigeons were displaced and kept until they were released in airtight containers ventilated with environmental air that could be passed through: (a) a filter made of fiberglass paper retaining large portions of the solid and liquid aerosol particles, (b) an additional filter consisting of activated charcoal, or (c) no filter (controls). Before its release, each bird was taken out of the container, and its olfactory epithelium was immediately anesthetized by lidocaine (Xylocaine). Thus, neither experimentals nor controls were able to smell while their initial orientation behavior was being observed. The controls' initial bearings were better homeward-oriented than those of pigeons ventilated with charcoal-filtered air in 14 of 17 releases conducted in Italy and Germany, at distances of 24–155 km. In the final analysis, the bearings of the charcoal-filter birds did not show any relation to the direction toward home, whereas those of the controls did. Pigeons ventilated with air that had passed through only the paper filter did not behave noticeably differently from control pigeons. It is concluded that the material bases of olfactory navigation in pigeons are substances dispersed in the atmosphere, most probably in a molecular state.  相似文献
