The experiments were done to investigate the effect of soil pH and organic matter content on EDTA-extractable heavy metal contents in soils and heavy metal concentrations in rice straw and grains. EDTA-extractable Cr contents in soils and concentrations in rice tissues were negatively correlated with soil pH, but positively correlated with organic matter content. The combination of soil pH and organic matter content would produce the more precise regression models for estimation of EDTA-Cu, Pb and Zn contents in soils, demonstrating the distinct effect of the two factors on the availability of these heavy metals in soils. Soil pH greatly affected heavy metal concentrations in rice plants. Furthermore, inclusion of other soil properties in the stepwise regression analysis improved the regression models for predicting straw Fe and grain Zn concentrations, indicating that other soil properties should be taken into consideration for precise predicting of heavy metal concentrations in rice plants.  相似文献

Aging of aerosol from wood chip combustion in a stoker burner was monitored in an outdoor environmental chamber for 19–27 h in order to study the size, volatility and organic carbon (OC) content of the combustion aerosol particles during aging. A scanning mobility particle sizer, a volatility tandem differential mobility analyzer (VTDMA), and a thermal–optical carbon analyzer were utilized. The VTDMA and carbon analyses were performed at the beginning, after 17–24 h of aging and at one intermediate point. The size decrease of freshly emitted particles was 6–10% when heated to 360C, and was found to depend on the experiment start time. For particles aged for 24 h, a 74–86% decrease in particle size at 360C was observed. The more volatile OC fraction and the total OC fraction in the particles increased and the less volatile OC fraction decreased with aging. This suggests that during aging more volatile compounds condense on or heavier compounds photodegrade into lighter ones in the particles. Occasionally, new particle formation and growth were observed in the following day. The new particles were found to be composed mainly of volatile material.  相似文献

BackgroundResearchers and policymakers are increasingly focused on combined exposures to social and environmental stressors, especially given how often these stressors tend to co-locate. Such exposures are equally relevant in urban and rural areas and may accrue disproportionately to particular communities or specific subpopulations.ObjectivesTo estimate relationships between racial isolation (RI), a measure of the extent to which minority racial/ethnic group members are exposed to only one another, and long-term particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of < 2.5 μ (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) levels in urban and nonurban areas of the eastern two-thirds of the US.MethodsLong-term (5 year average) census tract-level PM2.5 and O3 concentrations were calculated using output from a downscaler model (2002–2006). The downscaler uses a linear regression with additive and multiplicative bias coefficients to relate ambient monitoring data with gridded output from the Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. A local, spatial measure of RI was calculated at the tract level, and tracts were classified by urbanicity, RI, and geographic region. We examined differences in estimated pollutant exposures by RI, urbanicity, and demographic subgroup (e.g., race/ethnicity, education, socioeconomic status, age), and used linear models to estimate associations between RI and air pollution levels in urban, suburban, and rural tracts.ResultsHigh RI tracts (≥ 80th percentile) had higher average PM2.5 levels in each category of urbanicity compared to low RI tracts (< 20th percentile), with the exception of the rural West. Patterns in O3 levels by urbanicity and RI differed by region. Linear models indicated that PM2.5 concentrations were significantly and positively associated with RI. The largest association between PM2.5 and RI was observed in the rural Midwest, where a one quintile increase in RI was associated with a 0.90 μg/m3 (95% confidence interval: 0.83, 0.99 μg/m3) increase in PM2.5 concentration. Associations between O3 and RI in the Northeast, Midwest and West were positive and highest in suburban and rural tracts, even after controlling for potential confounders such as percentage in poverty.ConclusionRI is associated with higher 5 year estimated PM2.5 concentrations in urban, suburban, and rural census tracts, adding to evidence that segregation is broadly associated with disparate air pollution exposures. Disproportionate burdens to adverse exposures such as air pollution may be a pathway to racial/ethnic disparities in health.  相似文献

Numerous recent studies discuss phosphate rock extraction, and some even propose that a peak in production could be reached in coming decades. This would have great consequences as phosphate rock based fertilizers are irreplaceable in modern agriculture. Studies suggesting an impending peak commonly use curve fitting models where mathematical functions are fitted to historical world production data, while studies using other methods reach completely different results. Also, a sudden increase in global reserve estimates is commonly used to dismiss these warnings, and has somewhat altered the debate. The recent multiplication of estimated reserves is mostly based on an increase of the Moroccan reserve estimate, leading to Morocco currently making up most of the global reserves. This study models global phosphate rock production using a disaggregated curve fitting model based on the production in individual major producing countries, providing a somewhat different view than most studies, and show that the global trade of phosphate rock could be completely dependent on Morocco in the future. There are several different factors that can potentially limit global production and these factors should be considered for the individual producing countries. Society's total dependence on phosphate rock should be further investigated despite claims of large resource occurrences.  相似文献

There is a widespread need for the use of quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) to determine reclaimed water quality for specific uses, however neither faecal indicator levels nor pathogen concentrations alone are adequate for assessing exposure health risk. The aim of this study was to build a conceptual model representing factors contributing to the microbiological health risks of reusing water treated in maturation ponds. This paper describes the development of an unparameterised model that provides a visual representation of theoretical constructs and variables of interest. Information was collected from the peer-reviewed literature and through consultation with experts from regulatory authorities and academic disciplines. In this paper we explore how, considering microbial risk as a modular system, following the QMRA framework enables incorporation of the many factors influencing human exposure and dose response, to better characterise likely human health impacts. By using and expanding upon the QMRA framework we deliver new insights into this important field of environmental exposures. We present a conceptual model of health risk of microbial exposure which can be used for maturation ponds and, more importantly, as a generic tool to assess health risk in diverse wastewater reuse scenarios.  相似文献

通过选取湖南省宁乡市某轻度Cd污染稻田开展连续两季水稻秸秆离田田间试验,研究秸秆离田措施对轻度Cd污染稻田土壤Cd有效性及水稻对Cd吸收累积的影响.结果表明:(1)连续两季秸秆离田有效提高了土壤pH值,降低土壤有机质和根际土壤Cd含量;T1~T4处理使土壤pH值提升0.04~0.58个单位,有机质含量降低了0.68%~25.87%,根际土壤Cd含量降低了3.76%~12.78%.(2)连续两季秸秆离田能降低酸可提取态和可氧化态Cd占比,使残渣态Cd占比上升;同时秸秆离田处理降低了根际土壤Cd的生物有效性,使根际土壤TCLP、 DTPA和CaCl2提取态Cd含量均显著降低.(3)水稻秸秆离田可显著降低土壤孔隙水中DOC和Cd浓度,连续两季秸秆离田处理下(T1~T4)土壤孔隙水中Cd浓度分别降低了4.54%~40.00%和2.75%~67.34%,说明DOC是影响土壤孔隙水中Cd浓度的关键因素之一.(4)连续两季秸秆离田各处理(T1~T4)降低了水稻各部位对Cd的吸收累积,其中秸秆和根系全部离田处理(T4)下,2020年晚稻和2021年早稻糙米Cd含量分别降低了18....  相似文献

Colonies of social insects are sometimes viewed as superorganisms. The birth, reproduction, and death of colonies can be studied with demographic measures analogous to those normally applied to individuals, but two additional questions arise. First, how do adaptive colony demographies arise from individual behaviors? Second, since these superorganisms are made up of genetically distinct individuals, do conflicts within the colony sometimes modify and upset optima for colonies? The interplay between individual and superindividual or colony interests appears to be particularly complex in neotropical, swarm-founding, epiponine wasps such as Parachartergus colobopterus. In a long-term study of this species, we censused 286 nests to study colony-level reproduction and survivorship and evaluated individual-level factors by assessing genetic relatedness and queen production. Colony survivorship followed a negative exponential curve very closely, indicating type II survivorship. This pattern is defined by constant mortality across ages and is more characteristic of birds and other vertebrates than of insects. Individual colonies are long-lived, lasting an average of 347 days, with a maximum of over 4.5 years. The low and constant levels of colony mortality arise in part from colony initiation by swarming, nesting on protected substrates, and an unusual expandable nest structure. The ability to requeen rapidly was also important; relatedness data suggest that colonies requeen on average once every 9–12 months. We studied whether colony optima with respect to the timing of reproduction could be upset by individual worker interests. In this species, colonies are normally polygynous but new queens are produced only after a colony reaches the monogynous state, a result which is in accord with the genetic interests of workers. Therefore colony worker interests might drive colonies to reproduce whenever queen number happens to cycled down to one rather than at the season that is otherwise optimal. However, we found reproduction to be heavily concentrated in the rainy season. The number of new colonies peaked in this season as did the percentages of males and queens. Relatedness among workers reached a seasonal low of 0.21–0.27, reflecting the higher numbers of laying queens. This seasonality was achieved in part by a modest degree of synchrony in the queen reduction cycle. Worker relatedness reached peaks of around 0.4 in the dry season, reflecting a decrease to a harmonic mean queen number of about 2.5. Thus, a significant number of colonies must be approaching monogyny entering the rainy season. Coupled with polygynous colonies rearing only males (split sex ratios), this makes it possible for a colony cycle driven by selfish worker interests to be consistent with concentrating colony reproduction during a favorable season.  相似文献

Application of sulfate-containing amendments is oftensuggested as a mitigation option to reduce methane (CH4) emissionsfrom rice (Oryza) fields. This paper discusses the mechanism andpotential of this mitigation option, reviews the relevant experimental data,and presents first, indicative costs of application. CH4 emission datafor rice fields with sulfate-containing amendments are compiled toreinterpret the resulting reduction in CH4 emission and find a generalrelationship between emission reduction and amount of sulfate applied. Thereduction in CH4 emission depends on the amount of sulfate applied.However, absolute emission reduction is location specific and cannot bederived from the amount of sulfate (SO2- 4) applied only. We established alogarithmic relationship, across locations, between SO2- 4 application andfractional emission reduction relative to the emission of the non-amendedcontrol field. Recycling of SO2- 4 in the rhizosphere was essential to explainthe observed reductions in CH4 emission for a number of theexperiments. The cost of applying SO2- _4-containing fertilizers varies acrosscountries and depends on local fertilizer prices. Since a fractional reductionis obtained, the cost-efficiency in terms of CH4 mitigation per unitof SO2- 4 applied will be highest in high-emitting rice production systems.Provided the proper target areas are selected, the cost of SO2- 4-containingfertilizer as a mitigation option to reduce CH4 emissions in rice fieldsis estimated at 5–10 US dollar per Mg CO2-equivalent.  相似文献
