The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model (Arnold et al., 1998) is a popular watershed management tool. Currently, the SWAT model, actively supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Texas A&M, operates only on Microsoft® Windows, which hinders modelers that use other operating systems (OS). This technical note introduces the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN) distributed “SWATmodel” package which allows SWAT 2005 and 2012 to be widely distributed and run as a linear model‐like function on multiple OS and processor platforms. This allows researchers anywhere in the world using virtually any OS to run SWAT. In addition to simplifying the use of SWAT across computational platforms, the SWATmodel package allows SWAT modelers to utilize the analytical capabilities, statistical libraries, modeling tools, and programming flexibility inherent to R. The software allows watershed modelers to develop a simple hydrological watershed model conceptualization of the SWAT model and to obtain a first approximation of the minimum expected results a more complicated model should deliver. As a proof of concept, we test the SWAT model by initializing and calibrating 314 U.S. Geological Survey stream gages in the Chesapeake Bay watershed and present the results.  相似文献

This article presents an empirically based model, WiCTS ( Wi thdrawal and C onsumption for T hermoelectric S ystems), to estimate regional water withdrawals and consumption implied by any electricity generation portfolio. WiTCS uses water use rates, developed at the substate level, to predict water use by scaling the rates with predicted energy generation. The capability of WiCTS is demonstrated by assessing the impact of renewable electricity generation scenarios on water use in the United States (U.S.) through 2050. The energy generation scenarios are taken from the Renewable Energy Futures Study performed by the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy. Results indicate reductions in water use are achieved under these renewable energy scenarios. The analysis further explores the impact of two modifications to the modeling framework. The first modification presumes geothermal and concentrated solar power generation technologies employ water‐intensive cooling systems vs. cooling technology that requires no water. The second modification presumes all water‐intensive cooling technologies use closed cycle cooling (as opposed to once‐through cooling) technologies by 2050. Results based on one of the renewable generation scenarios indicate water use increases by over 20% under the first modification, and water consumption increases by approximately 40% while water withdrawals decrease by over 85% under the second modification.  相似文献

Abstract

The developed thin‐layer chromatogram of DCPA (Dacthal) is sprayed with 4‐(p‐nitrobenzyl)pyridine chromogenic reagent followed by ammonium carbonate solution. The chromatogram is then heated in an oven at 130°C for 20 minutes. When cool, the chromatogram is sprayed with tetraethylenepentamine reagent. DCPA spots appear blue against a white background. The sensitivity of this test is about 1 μg. The procedure is useful to detect DCPA in water and in soil.  相似文献

Abstract

The loss of carbofuran was studied from rice paddy water treated with a granular formulation of the insecticide, and from ponds filled with drainage from the paddy. The average half‐life (t1/2) for carbofuran loss was 57 hr. Controlled experiments indicated that pH was the predominating factor governing carbofuran loss from water in the environment studied. The loss due to hydrolysis was over 700 times more rapid at pH 10 (t1/2 = 1.2 hr.) than at pH 7 (t1/2 = 864 hr.) in buffered deionized water. The average pH of the rice paddy was 8, but diurnal fluctuations of 7 to 9.5 are common in similar environments. Impurities in the water, sunlight, and temperature influence the rate of carbofuran loss but not nearly so much as pH. There was no evidence for significant loss due to evaporation or oxidation. The results have important implications for the duration of the insecticide's activity and the effect on fish within or downstream from treated paddies.  相似文献

Abstract

In an attempt to examine the chronic effect of low levels of cadmium on hepatic drug‐metabolizing enzyme system, an experiment was carried out in which growing male rats were given 0, 5, 10, and 2 0 ppm of cadmium in drinking water for a period of 8 weeks. An ip administration of a hypnotic dose of pentobarbital to the cadmium‐treated and the control rats 2 4 hr following the termination of the experiment exhibited that there was no significant difference in the drug metabolism in control and any of the treated groups. Next, liver microsomes were isolated from animals in all groups to study their ability to metabolize drugs in vitro. The results indicated that the activity of benzphetamine N‐demethylase and aniline hydroxylase, and the concentration of microsomal cytochrome P‐450 were almost identical in the control and treated groups. On the other hand, a single ip dose of cadmium (2 mg/kg) caused significant decrease in the in vivo and in vitro microsomal drug metabolism. These results suggest that although a single ip dose of cadmium (2 mg/kg) causes significant inhibition of drug metabolism, chronic exposure to cadmium up to 2 0 ppm in drinking water over a period of 8 weeks is unlikely to affect hepatic drug metabolism.  相似文献

Abstract

The effects of 32 pesticides at two concentrations on acetylene reduction (non‐symbiotic nitrogen fixation), nitrogen fixers, bacteria and fungi in an organic soil were assessed. None of the pesticide treatments suppressed C H reduction as compared to controls. No significant inhibition of the population of non‐symbiotic nitrogen fixers occurred. However, stimulatory effects were observed with treatments of fensulfothion, fonofos, oxamyl, DDR , TeloneR and Telone CR . Bacterial and fungal populations showed temporary declines but all recovered within 7 days to levels similar to or higher than those in the controls.  相似文献

Abstract

The aqueous solubilities of 27 insecticides and related compounds were determined. Diazinon, fensulfothion and paraoxon had solubilities greater than reported in the literature. The presence of impurities and/or additional components in the mixture altered the measured solubility values. Addition of acetone in amounts up to 1% (volume) produced increases in parathion solubility up to 11%. The pH values of the equilibrated solubility systems were, in most instances, acidic and, in several instances, were in the pH 3–4 range.  相似文献

Abstract

Administration of endosulfan significantly increased microsomal protein, cytochrome P‐450 content and the activity of aminopyrine N‐demethylase. Effect of endosulfan and actinomycin D either alone or together on microsomal protein, cytochrome P‐450, NADPH cytochrome c reductase, aniline hydroxylase, aminopyrine N‐demethylase, phosphatidylcholine content, incorporation of 3H‐choline and 14C‐methionine were studied in rats given amino acid deficient and supplemented diets. Administration of endosulfan significantly increased the above parameters in both the dietary groups, whereas administration of actinomycin D did not have any effect in rats fed supplemented diets, however, significant decrease in the PC and the incorporation of choline and methionine into PC of rats fed deficient diet were observed. A positive correlation in the effect of endosulfan on hepatic mixed function oxidase activity and hepatic phosphatidylcholine is observed.  相似文献

Abstract

In support of field data, laboratory studies were conducted on volatilization, mineralization and binding of 14C‐p,p'‐DDT in soils at Sao Paulo. Incubation of soil for 6 weeks did not result in volatilized organics or mineralization; with >95% extractable radiocarbon in the form of p,p'‐DDT. Small amounts of bound residues (1.8%) were detected in soil. These data confirm the very slow dissipation of DDT in the field which presumably relates to the acidic pH of soil (4.5–4.8).

Bound 14C‐residues in soils treated with 14C‐p,p'‐DDT at Praia Grande and Sao Paulo could be released (5–21%) by sulphuric acid treatment. The released residue had the composition: 69–90% DDT, 7–32% DDD and 0–3% DDE. Incubation of soil bound 14C‐residues with fresh inoculum for 3 months did not result in release of 14C.

Dissipation from wooden surfaces was fairly slow. After 20 weeks, 74% of the applied radioactivity could be recovered; 44% hexane‐non‐extractable.  相似文献

Abstract

The removal of 2, 4‐D (2, 4‐ dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) from aqueous solutions by activated spent bleaching earths (SBE) was studied at 20 °C. Experiments were performed as a function of time, initial concentration, dose and particle size of the adsorbent. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption equations were fitted by the adsorption data obtained. The values of Langmuir and Freundlich constants were determined. The adsorption kinetic was found to follow Lagergren equation. Both the boundary layer and intraparticle diffusion played important roles in the adsorption rate of 2, 4‐D. As the size of the adsorbent increased, the time to reach equilibrium increased but adsorption capacity decreased.  相似文献
