A survey of land degradation was undertaken in New South Wales, Australia during 1987–1988. The aims of the survey were to
assess the location, extent, and severity of ten forms of degradation and to present the data in map and statistical form.
Sample points were located on a regular grid. The method was designed so that data could be acquired from aerial photographs,
expert local knowledge, and limited field checking. Individual statewide maps were prepared for each form of degradation.
Map data were shown in pixel form. Sheet and rill erosion and soil structure decline were confined mostly to lands used for
cropping. Gully erosion was commonly found across the state, while mass movement was confined to steeper lands. There were
three severe areas of dryland salinity; irrigation salinity was mapped in parts of the southern irrigation lands. Induced
soil acidity was severe in some cropping and pasture lands. Absence of tree regrowth was a noticeable feature of lands used
for cropping. The survey enabled community awareness of the problems of land degradation to be increased, in addition to assisting
regional land managers in resource allocation. The survey also provided the basis for the future location of sites that could
be used to monitor the trends in the status of land degradation. 相似文献

Trail erosion patterns in Great Smoky Mountains National Park 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
All the maintained trails in Great Smoky Mountains National Park were surveyed for width, depth, and a variety of types of erosion. Trail erosion is related to a number of environmental variables, including vegetation type, elevation, trail slope, and section of the park. Open grass balds and spruce-fir forest are the most erosion-sensitive plant communities, and the xeric oak and pine types are the least sensitive. Trails in virgin or mature forest tend to be in poorer condition than those in successional areas. The most important physical factor is the slope of the trail.Trails in the Tennessee district are in slightly poorer condition, on the average, than those in the North Carolina district, but the Appalachian Trail is more eroded than either. A poor section of the park may have ten times the erosion of a good section. On an allpark basis, water erosion is the most important problem, with 15% of the trail surface affected.A comparison of visitation patterns with trail condition indicates that redistribution of use would help to mitigate some erosion problems. Because trail condition is correlated to physical environmental factors, however, some sites will require intensive maintenance, even if visitation is low.The data from this survey have already been used in environmental analysis of proposed developments within the park and can be applied to long-range planning for the park trail system as a whole. 相似文献

Removal of nonnative riparian trees is accelerating to conserve water and improve habitat for native species. Widespread control
of dominant species, however, can lead to unintended erosion. Helicopter herbicide application in 2003 along a 12-km reach
of the Rio Puerco, New Mexico, eliminated the target invasive species saltcedar (Tamarix spp.), which dominated the floodplain, as well as the native species sandbar willow (Salix exigua Nuttall), which occurred as a fringe along the channel. Herbicide application initiated a natural experiment testing the
importance of riparian vegetation for bank stability along this data-rich river. A flood three years later eroded about 680,000 m3 of sediment, increasing mean channel width of the sprayed reach by 84%. Erosion upstream and downstream from the sprayed
reach during this flood was inconsequential. Sand eroded from channel banks was transported an average of 5 km downstream
and deposited on the floodplain and channel bed. Although vegetation was killed across the floodplain in the sprayed reach,
erosion was almost entirely confined to the channel banks. The absence of dense, flexible woody stems on the banks reduced
drag on the flow, leading to high shear stress at the toe of the banks, fluvial erosion, bank undercutting, and mass failure.
The potential for increased erosion must be included in consideration of phreatophyte control projects. 相似文献

Excessive soil losses due to erosion or lateral displacement by machinery impair productivity. Some soil loss is tolerable, but not so much that plant productivity diminishes. Thus productivity is the dominant concern in determining soil-loss tolerance. The effects of soil loss on productivity, however, are difficult to determine. Therefore, two alternatives are discussed for determining the limits of soil loss, or soil-loss tolerance. These alternatives are the maintenance of soil organic matter and, for shallow and moderately deep soils, the maintenance of soil depth. They are not new strategies, but our rapidly increasing knowledge of the dynamics of soil organic matter and the rates of soil formation from bedrock or consolidated sediments warrants the reconsideration of these alternatives. Reductions in either soil organic matter or the depth of shallow or moderately deep soils will lead to declining productivity. Soil organic matter, considered to be a surrogate for productivity, is much easier to monitor than is productivity. Also, there are many computer models for predicting the effects of management on soil organic matter. Recently compiled data on rates of soil formation suggest that soil losses of 1 t/a (2.24 Mg/ha yr) are greater than the rate of replenishment by the weathering of lithic or paralithic material in all but very wet climates. 相似文献

Soil erosion and non-point source pollution impacts assessment with the aid of multi-temporal remote sensing images 总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Soil erosion associated with non-point source pollution is viewed as a process of land degradation in many terrestrial environments. Careful monitoring and assessment of land use variations with different temporal and spatial scales would reveal a fluctuating interface, punctuated by changes in rainfall and runoff, movement of people, perturbation from environmental disasters, and shifts in agricultural activities and cropping patterns. The use of multi-temporal remote sensing images in support of environmental modeling analysis in a geographic information system (GIS) environment leading to identification of a variety of long-term interactions between land, resources, and the built environment has been a highly promising approach in recent years. This paper started with a series of supervised land use classifications, using SPOT satellite imagery as a means, in the Kao-Ping River Basin, South Taiwan. Then, it was designed to differentiate the variations of eight land use patterns in the past decade, including orchard, farmland, sugarcane field, forest, grassland, barren, community, and water body. Final accuracy was confirmed based on interpretation of available aerial photographs and global positioning system (GPS) measurements. Finally, a numerical simulation model (General Watershed Loading Function, GWLF) was used to relate soil erosion to non-point source pollution impacts in the coupled land and river water systems. Research findings indicate that while the decadal increase in orchards poses a significant threat to water quality, the continual decrease in forested land exhibits a potential impact on water quality management. Non-point source pollution, contributing to part of the downstream water quality deterioration of the Kao-Ping River system in the last decade, has resulted in an irreversible impact on land integrity from a long-term perspective. 相似文献

The threat of man-induced global change on the nations of the South Asian seas region varies from place to place because of
differences in exposure to monsoons and stoms, differences in local tectonics and subsidence, and variations in air and sea
climates. Because several nations are involved, some having subsistence budgets, and given the cost of deriving independently
a comprehensive response to global change, the similarities and differences between national settings must be identified soon.
These comparisons will form the basis for local response strategies: the similarities provide a basis for responses similar
to that of other nations and the differences provide for local adaptation. That climate change on the South Asian coastal
region will have an impact is certain: its economics, environment, and coastal land uses are dominated to a certain extent
by this marine influence. The extent of these impacts, however, is uncertain. Accompanying global change will be changes in
sea level, differences in storm climate, and altered precipitation patterns; science cannot define today what pattern these
changes will take. Because global change is inevitable—although its magnitude, timing, and geographic distribution are unknown—the
South Asian seas region should begin the appropriate research and planning studies to set forth a reasoned response to global
change, for implementation when scientific evidence for global change is more quantitative. 相似文献

The entire northwestern coast of Portugal is undergoing severe erosion and there are several areas at high risk of erosion.
Commonly considered as a problem—because it jeopardizes human development along the coast—erosion is indeed a natural process
of sediment redistribution. This paper presents a brief analysis of erosion driving forces and the subsequent state of vulnerability
that coastal segments between the mouth of the River Douro and Cape Mondego are facing. The paper also discusses erosion risk
levels, low or high, and the subsequent questions whether there are populations, economical assets or natural habitats at
risk and/or areas prone to coastal flooding. Main challenges and future trends along the study area are identified in the
light of understanding the underlying causes of conflicts and what realistically can be achieved given the morphodynamics

In Germany small dams (<10 m) on flood retention reservoirs are often provided with an overtoppable dam section for flood relief. In case of overtopping a protection of the dam body is absolutely mandatory as the mainly cohesive dam material is not capable to withstand the affecting erosive forces of the flow. There is a big number of possibilities how to protect the dam whilst overtopping. Some of the most common construction types of slope protection layers for a sufficient dam protection such as riprap and placed stones, have been tested in large scale physical models at the Hydraulic Laboratory at Universität Stuttgart. 为掌握福建省境内个22重点县水土流失地理国情现状,利用高分辨率资源三号遥感卫星影像数据进行监测分析。以土壤侵蚀分类分级标准SL190-2007为依据,通过土地利用、植被覆盖度以及坡度等水土流失影响因子的信息提取,基于GIS软件平台上,建立符合福建省水土流失地理国情的遥感监测信息提取模型。经GPS进行野外调查、验证和修改,最终完成区域水土流失图斑的提取和建库工作,为科学规划与治理及其成效分析等提供科学依据。 相似文献
