The process by which ant scouts move a group of nestmates toward a newly discovered food site is called recruitment. In this paper, I report on the interactions between scouts and nestmates that result in a graded recruitment response to graded food quality in the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta. Twelve experimental groups composed of 100 fire ant workers and 50 fire ant larvae were established (three experimental groups per colony × four stock colonies). Each experimental group was placed in a shallow, artificial nest with a glass cover. After a 48-h period of food deprivation, experimental groups were exposed to one of three concentrations of sugar water. Behavioral interactions between scouts and nestmates in each group were videotaped at 10× magnification for 20 min. Detailed behavioral data on a total of 120 scouts (10 scouts per experimental group) and ~1,000 nestmates (~90 nestmates per experimental group) were transcribed from the videotapes using standard play and frame-by-frame techniques. Throughout the recruitment process, scouts employed six discrete behaviors to inform nestmates of the location and quality of a food site. Scouts laid incoming trails, waggled their heads, increased walking tempo, stroked nestmates with their antennae, advertised with a brief food display, and led groups of nestmates to the food site by laying outgoing trails. In turn, nestmates assessed the food sample with antennae, then responded to or resisted recruitment based on the quality of food advertised, their employment status and their level of hunger. In summary, recruitment was an emergent property based on competent supply and demand decisions made face-to-face inside the nest rather than on the trail or at the food site.Communicated by J. The association between spatial proximity and paternity was studied in a population of the striped plateau lizard, Sceloporus virgatus. The relationship between estimated mating success and male phenotypic traits was examined for a sample of 55 males. DNA
samples were obtained from 13 female-offspring families. The males with the closest spatial proximity to each female were
tested as possible sires within each family. Fingerprinting with two multilocus hypervariable minisatellite probes revealed
a strong correspondence between male-female spatial proximity and actual paternity. Paternity could be assigned for 72 of
the 100 hatchlings. Most hatchlings with identifiable sires were attributed to a male with the highest category of spatial
proximity to the mother. However, there was a low to moderate level of multiple paternity within clutches, and for some clutches
probable sires could not be identified even though the most likely behavioural candidates were tested. Thus, nonterritorial
males or other males lacking strong social and spatial relationships with females may achieve some degree of reproductive
success. Analysis of mating success revealed that male success increased with body size, up to a point beyond which larger
size conferred no advantage.

Prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.) have been poisoned throughout this century because of grazing competition with livestock. Recent evidence showed these
early claims were exaggerated, but animal control was already entrenched in government policy. As a result, ongoing government
subsidized poisoning has reduced prairie dogs to about 2% of their former distribution. The reduction of prairie dogs diminished
species diversity in the arid grasslands of North America, including the potential extinction of the black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes). Cost-benefit analysis revealed that poisoning costs more than any grazing benefits accrued. This analysis did not consider
the long-term costs of reversing ecosystem degradation, the intangible value of biological diversity as a public benefit,
or the depletion of biotic resources as a loss of actual or potential wealth. The government presently finances the poisoning
policy and the preservation of endangered species like the black-footed ferret, two apparently conflicting programs. We, therefore,
propose an integrated management plan that considers both interests. We propose that federal monies allocated to the poisoning
program be converted into a rebate for ranchers who manage livestock while preserving the prairie dog community. This would
redirect funds and personnel already allocated to prairie dog eradication to an incentive for ranchers who manage for livestock
and wildlife. Livestock interests and grassland biotic diversity would both benefit. 相似文献

We advocate assessing the reliability of signals of aggressive intent by eliciting aggressive signaling from a subject, giving
the subject an opportunity to attack a model, and testing whether the subject’s displays predict a subsequent attack. Using
this design, we found that most singing behaviors are poor predictors of attack in song sparrows (Melospiza melodia). Laidre and Vehrencamp (Behav Ecol Sociobiol, DOI 10.1007/s00265-007-0539-3, 2008) suggested altering our experimental design to make the model more realistic; it remains
to be seen whether such design changes would change the association between display and attack. Laidre and Vehrencamp (Behav Ecol Sociobiol, DOI 10.1007/s00265-007-0539-3, 2008) also suggested that the reliability of soft song, the one display that predicts attack
in song sparrows, can be explained by a vulnerability cost. We question the rationale for a vulnerability cost for this display
and suggest instead that soft song has a competing functions cost, in that, by using soft song to counter an intruder, a male

Frogs and toads commonly form large choruses around suitable breeding habitat during the mating season. Although often regarded
as a constraint on the acoustic behavior of signalers and receivers, the sounds of a chorus could also serve as an acoustic
beacon that allows some frogs to locate the breeding aggregation. Attraction to chorus sounds might be particularly important
for explosively breeding frogs. In these species, which often mate just one or a few days during the year, the timing and
location of breeding aggregations can be unpredictable because their formation often depends on local climatic factors, such
as rainfall or a change in temperature. I used laboratory playback experiments to test the hypothesis that male wood frogs
(Rana sylvatica), an explosively breeding frog, exhibit positive phonotaxis toward the sound of a conspecific chorus. Males were released
at the center of a rectangular arena with a speaker positioned in each corner facing toward the release point. In a single-stimulus
experiment, more males approached a speaker broadcasting a conspecific chorus than the three silent speakers in the arena.
In a two-stimulus experiment, more males approached a speaker broadcasting a conspecific chorus compared to the two silent
speakers or a fourth speaker simultaneously broadcasting the spectrally overlapping sound of a heterospecific (R. septentrionalis) chorus. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that male wood frogs could use the sound of a chorus as a beacon

Fly strike is a painful conditioncaused by live maggots eating at the flesh of sheep.Remedies for this disorder are traumatic, with sheepundergoing painful mulesing and tail dockingoperations to protect against flystrike. In an attemptto find control solutions and to understand thedisorder, Australasian researchers increase sheepsuffering by conducting experiments that artificiallyinduce fly strike. Some of these experiments have noapplication in prevention and control of fly strike.Many others could be modified or replaced with lesspainful techniques.Anecdotal evidence through communication withorganic farmers suggests that fly strike is largelypreventable if farmers keep sheep healthy and inspectthem regularly. Some organic farmers have largelyeliminated fly strike from their farm. Investigationson fly strike control using non-intrusive techniquesare also progressing in Australasia and the UnitedKingdom.Since it is possible to conduct useful research andto run profitable farms with little or no fly strike,much of the current management, research and policy onsheep farming is ethically questionable even to thoseholding the moderate view that animals can be used forhuman purposes providing suffering is kept to aminimum. Sheep farmers will need to take animalwelfare problems into consideration. Social network analysis is an increasingly popular tool for the study of the fine-scale and global social structure of animals.
It has attracted particular attention by those attempting to unravel social structure in fission–fusion populations. It is
clear that the social network approach offers some exciting opportunities for gaining new insights into social systems. However,
some of the practices which are currently being used in the animal social networks literature are at worst questionable and
at best over-enthusiastic. We highlight some of the areas of method, analysis and interpretation in which greater care may
be needed in order to ensure that the biology we extract from our networks is robust. In particular, we suggest that more
attention should be given to whether relational data are representative, the potential effect of observational errors and
the choice and use of statistical tests. The importance of replication and manipulation must not be forgotten, and the interpretation
of results requires care.

The Netherlands is a small country with many people and much livestock. As a result, animals in nature reservations are often living near cattle farms. Therefore, people from the agricultural practices are afraid that wild animals will infect domestic livestock with diseases like Swine Fever and Foot and Mouth Disease. To protect agriculture (considered as an important economic practice), very strict regulations have been made for minimizing this risk. In this way, the practice of animal farming has been dominating the practices of nature management completely. If, for instance, Foot and Mouth Disease strikes an agricultural area, all wild pigs and cattle living in the nearby nature reservations have to be killed, whether infected or not. This dominant position of one practice over the other has now become problematic. While the morality of the practice of nature management seems to be very different from the morality of agriculture and agriculture has become less important from an economic point of view, the public as well as those involved in nature management no longer seem to accept the dominant position of agriculture. Besides a literature study, we performed a field study with in-depth interviews with experts from both practices to analyze the dynamics of the internal moralities of both practices in the previous century, in order to clarify the contemporary situation. The conclusion was that the traditionally strong position of agriculture is not only weakening; it also appears that the internal values of agriculture are changing. The experts from both sides agreed that, in case of a disease outbreak, it is neither ethically justified nor necessary (because of the estimated low risk of disease transfer) to destroy the animals in nature reservations as a routine preventive measure.
