ABSTRACT: Fish hatcheiies for cold water species (e.g., salmonids) require water below a certain specified optimum temperature. Deep lakes and reservoirs, which are thermally stratified, will have cold water below the thermocline suitable for fish hatchery supplies. Proper management will require withdrawal of water at different depths and a mixture of correct proportions can yield water at desired temperatures and quality. For preliminary studies, a mathematical model can be used to show by a comparatively simple computation the effect of different withdrawal rates of cold water and to check if the situation is critical. A critical situation may warrant the application of sophisticated computer models and/or the use of chilling at the hatchery. The method is illustrated by a case study for a small lake in the Province of Nova Scotia.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: The time variation in the temperature distribution of a static water impoundment is predicted. The body of water is modeled as a discrete number of horizontally isothermal layers and the energy equation is solved using an implicit numerical scheme. Vertical energy transport mechanisms included are solar absorption, molecular diffusion, and convective mixing due to nocturnal turnover. The latter mechanism, called diurnal mixing, is found to have a profound effect on the stratification, particularly in the eplimnion patterns for a typical deep static impoundment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Synoptic water temperature measurements were taken in three temperate lakes located within 25 km of one another to study the effects of morphometry (and changes in weather) on seasonal and short-term thermal stratification characteristics. Two of the lakes had nearly the same surface areas and two had nearly identical mean depths; all were exposed to identical weather conditions. The dominance of weather over morphometry on the water surface temperature response was illustrated by the synoptic measurements in two different years. Stratification structure was also found to be dominated by weather for sufficiently deep lakes. Surface area effects were most subtle but explainable as sheltering effects. The onset of stratification was not, as traditionally described, a simple, gradual response of a lake to the annual solar radiation cycle. Rather it depends on a series of alternating heating, cooling, and mixing cycles similar to annual and diel cycles but with a period of approximately five days. These were in direct response to the passage of major weather systems and displayed no apparent time lag. No comparable synoptic water temperature data set could be found in the literature.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The effects of maintaining a 19 ha Colorado montane reservoir in a thermally destratified condition for one year were evaluated. Water temperatures were kept nearly vertically agd horizontally isothermal throughout the year. The weighted mean temperature of the lake was 1-4°C colder in winter and 1-2°C warmer in summer than normal. Deep water in summer was up to 6°C warmer than typical hypolimnion temperatures, but summer surface temperature was unaltered. Without destratification dissolved oxygen depletion develops in summer and winter, but by eliminating stratification, oxygen was kept near saturation throughout the year. Alkalinity, pH, conductivity, and total residue were not significantly affected. Seston decreased which was probably due to declines in planktonic diatom populations. Increases in iron and manganese did not occur in deep water during destratification. Calcium concentrations increased slightly. Magnesium and most anions (chloride, nitrate-N, and silica) were not greatly altered, but sulfate concentration was reduced. Artificial destratification, as a reservoir management tool, will be very useful in altering chemical problems; particularly increasing oxygen and decreasing iron and manganese concentrations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A method of predicting reservoir temperature profiles is presented. The model requires monthly averaged meteorological and hydrological data along with reservoir physical characteristics. The one-dimensional profiles are predicted by solving the time-dependent energy equation with an assumed epilimnetic depth and a diffusion coefficient applicable below the epilimnion. 简要回顾了潮汐河口环流、湍流、混合与层化的基本物理概念、内涵、研究方法、研究成果,指出了主要的研究进展,最后,展望了今后的研究方向。本文不考虑悬沙和风浪的影响。经典的河口环流也因潮汐应变的出现而受到挑战,河口环流由重力环流和潮汐应变环流构成。“涡黏度-剪切协方差(ESCO)”概念的提出,又区分出重力ESCO环流与潮汐ESCO环流。横向环流,尤其具有曲率的弯道中的横向环流,也得到进一步的理解。涡度方法的应用,揭示横向环流不仅由各种不同物理机制造成,而且对纵向河口重力环流有重要的影响。分层流中剪切湍流的理论加深了人们对潮汐河口湍流、混合的物理学的认识,势能差异方程更是使得定量理解潮汐河口混合与层化的三维时间、空间变化成为可能。  相似文献

The orientation of two closely related subspecies of Australian silvereye Zosterops lateralis was studied in captivity over 14 months. Migratory silvereyes Z. lateralis lateralis showed significant directional preferences during the spring and autumn migration periods and also displayed orientated behaviour during the breeding period. In contrast, the non-migratory subspecies Z. lateralis familiaris did not display any significant directional preferences at any time. This is the first time that the orientation behaviour of a migratory and non-migratory subspecies has been compared over the duration of an annual cycle, both during and outside the migratory periods. The results suggest that migratory silvereyes possess an endogenous program determining the timing and direction of autumn and spring migration and that this program is unique to the migratory subspecies. This is also the first comparison of this nature on southern hemisphere birds and demonstrates that the migratory behaviour of southern hemisphere migrants may be more similar to that of northern hemisphere migrants than previously thought.Submitted to Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology: 23 Jan 2006.  相似文献

三峡水库坝前水体水化学及溶解无机碳时空分布特征   总被引:9,自引:1,他引:8  
以三峡水库坝前水体为研究对象,分析了三峡水库蓄水至145m和172m水位时坝前垂向水体基本物理化学参数、主量元素、溶解无机碳(DIC)含量及其碳同位素(δ13CDIC)分布特征.研究结果表明,无论夏季还是冬季,坝前水体均没有出现水温分层现象,pH、电导、溶解氧也没有发生分层现象.坝前水体水化学组成主要受碳酸盐岩风化的控制,主量元素、溶解无机碳含量和三峡大坝截流前相比没有发生明显的变化.水体δ13CDIC值夏季(丰水期)低于冬季(枯水期),在垂向上变化不明显,与水库、湖泊δ13CDIC的时空变化特征相异而与自然河流的变化特征相似.目前,三峡水库坝前水体水化学特征主要表现出自然河流的特征,水库"湖沼学反应"还不明显.  相似文献

Testosterone (T) concentrations in many species are sensitive to seasonal changes and to changes in social conditions. However, the effect of the natural or endogenous T increase in the juvenile on their social behaviour is not well understood. In this study, T and behaviour were measured from the pro-social juvenile to the adult stage in semi-feral domestic fowl. During the pro-social phase T levels and the distance chicks maintained between each other, i.e. inter-individual distance (IID) were low. Then, as T increased, a corresponding increase in IID occurred and continued in males until dispersal to individual adult male territories. In the new and initially stable adult social structure, T declined and IID remained high, indicating a new behavioural mechanism was in place. Males first mated as T levels were declining. They were then challenged; then T increased, and then IID increased again. Adult male T levels fluctuate, being low or declining in a socially stable environment and increasing following a challenge, suggesting a regulatory or modulating role for T. The results are consistent with T having an endogenous role: in the juvenile, driving behavioural change towards adulthood, and in adulthood, a modulating role regulating social organisation.  相似文献
