Selection should favor flexibility in reproductive tactics when the combination of sexual traits and reproductive behaviors that achieve the highest fitness differs between males within a population. Understanding the functional significance of variation in male reproductive tactics can provide insight into their evolution. Male house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) in a Montana population display continuous variation in parental tactics: males with more elaborated (redder) plumage color provide little or no parental care compared to less elaborated (dull) males. Here, we first determined whether elevation of prolactin (a pituitary hormone) was related to variation in male parental tactics and, second, we used the relationship between prolactin levels and parental behavior to investigate why redder males avoid a high investment in parental care. We found that prolactin elevation was closely associated with paternal care. In addition, males with redder plumage color had low prolactin levels, whereas dull males, which provision twice as frequently, had high levels of prolactin. We also found that male condition was unrelated to plumage color but negatively related to prolactin levels. These results suggest that the low provisioning of redder males was not due to physiological constraints, but instead reflected a tactic to avoid the costs associated with parental care. The condition benefits accrued by redder males may explain their higher post-breeding survival compared to dull males. Moreover, dull males were previously shown to have higher pairing success than redder males, suggesting that the relationship between male plumage color and parental care may reflect individually optimized parental tactics.Communicated by H. Reproductive skew theory has been an important component of efforts to design a unifying theory of social evolution, as it aims to explain patterns of reproductive partitioning in animal societies as a function of relatedness, group productivity, fighting ability and ecological constraints on independent reproduction. However, empirical tests of the theory have often provided ambiguous or non-conclusive results, assumptions behind alternative models have rarely been tested, and theoretical elaborations have shown the limitations of the reproductive skew approach. Here we analyse a relatively large sample of colonies of the Stenogastrine wasp Parischnogaster mellyi with a powerful set of DNA microsatellite markers. We show that various apparently stable forms of social organisation co-exist in a single population, and that sharing of reproduction between related and unrelated egg-laying females occurs in some of the nests. Present reproductive skew theory appears to be at best partly sufficient to account for the observed complexity of social organisation. The observed patterns of colony composition and reproductive sharing are weakly consistent with the hypothesis of reproductive transactions, while they can more parsimoniously be explained by the life-history characteristics of the species.Communicated by R.F.A. Female Polistes paper wasps are capable of independent nesting, yet many populations demonstrate a mixture of solitary and cooperative nest foundation. Previous studies of Polistes have found survival and/or productivity advantages of cooperative nest foundation compared to solitary nesting, and reproductive skew models have been designed to predict the dynamics of such flexible cooperation. In this paper, we examine the success of different nesting strategies in a previously unstudied population of Polistes aurifer in southern California. The colony cycle of this population is less synchronous than that of other temperate species, and the frequency of solitary nesting averages 86.2%. Our data suggest that this low rate of cooperative nest founding is adaptive, as demonstrated by the lack of survival or productivity advantages for cooperative foundress associations. Due to foundress turnover and nest foundation later in the season, many nests produce only one set of offspring. This results in a loss of the eusocial nature of some nests in the population. Data from a small sample of multifoundress nests show significant positive reproductive skew, despite concession model predictions that skew should be low in populations with low ecological constraints on independent nesting. This lack of support for the concessions skew model reflects a diminished incentive for cooperation.Communicated by L. Keller 相似文献

Reproductive effort is a key parameter of life history because it measures the resources allocated to reproduction at the
expense of growth and maintenance. Male reproductive effort always had a minor role with respect to female effort both in
the development of theories and in field research. Elephant seals are an ideal subject for reproductive effort studies because
they fast during the breeding season, splitting the phase of energy acquisition from the phase of energy use for breeding.
In this paper, we present results on male reproductive effort (weight loss estimated by photogrammetry) in southern elephant
seals (Mirounga leonina), the most dimorphic and polygynous of all mammal species. We show that total reproductive effort increases with age, with
no sign of late decrease or senescence. Male reproductive effort in this species depends mostly on behavioral factors, i.e.,
the success in competition with other males, and the intensity of interaction with females. A large effort results in large
gains in both mating success and fertilizations. The large reproductive success that a few males are able to achieve come
at a big cost in terms of energy expenditure, but this cost does not seem to affect the likelihood of survival to the following

Demographic data from 848 Gabbra households are used to examine the relationships between herd size and reproductive success
in relation to sex, in a traditional, pastoralist population. The number of camels in the household herd has a significant
positive effect on the reproductive success of both men and women, although the effect of wealth is greater for men, as predicted
from evolutionary theory. The greater the number of elder brothers a man has, the lower his reproductive success, as a result
of a smaller initial herd and a later age at marriage. This is not true for women –number of elder sisters does not have a
measurable effect on a woman’s fertility, although it does have a small, negative effect on the size of her dowry. These results
are interpreted as competition between same-sex siblings for parental investment, in the form of their father’s herd, which
is more intense between sons than daughters as parental investments are greatest in males.

The stability of animal societies depends on individuals decisions about whether to tolerate or evict others and about whether to stay or leave. These decisions, in turn, depend on individuals costs and benefits of living in the group. The clown anemonefish, Amphiprion percula, lives in groups composed of a breeding pair and zero to four non-breeders. To determine why breeders accept the presence of non-breeders in this species I investigated the effect of non-breeders on multiple components of the breeders fitness. Non-breeders did not assist breeders in any obvious way. Experimental removal of non-breeders had no significant effect on the survival, growth, or reproductive success of breeders. Experimental removal of one of the breeding pair showed that non-breeders had little effect on the time taken for a widowed breeder to recommence breeding. The results indicate that the presence of non-breeders neither enhances, nor reduces, the fitness of breeders in A. percula. I suggest that non-breeders might modulate their effect on the fitness of breeders, either by reducing the costs they inflict or by increasing the benefits they provide, such that it just pays breeders to tolerate, rather than to evict, them. Quality-indicating sexually selected traits may have their honesty maintained by their costs or by an inherent “revealing”
nature. Long tails in birds are usually considered to be costly “handicaps”, but may have additional potential as revealing
indicators through the incidence of breakage. Magpies Pica pica with unbroken and less abraded tails paired earlier, but did not nest or fledge young earlier than pairs with tails in poorer
condition. Pairs mated assortatively by tail quality, and magpies with very broken tails remained unmated. Pairs in which
both members had almost undamaged tails fledged more offspring than pairs with poorer tails. Tail quality did not correlate
with the extent of any habitat type in the territory. Tail damage thus honestly indicated a magpie's reproductive potential,
and the data are consistent with its having a role in mate choice, as a revealing element of tail morphology.

We investigated parentage using multilocus DNA fingerprinting for 222 juveniles produced during 99 group-years in the bicolored
wren Campylorhynchus griseus, a cooperatively breeding bird of the Venezuelan savanna. Young adult bicolored wrens (auxiliaries) remain in their natal
territories and substantially enhance the production of young there. We have previously used behavioral indicators of dominance
by a single male/female pair (principals) to infer breeding status, resulting in the commonly applied model of helping in
which current fitness accrues to auxiliaries only indirectly, in proportion to their relatedness to the principals and the
effect of their assistance on breeding success. Our parentage analysis has demonstrated that 8.6% of the juveniles found on
territories were not produced by the principal pair. Parentage of 4.1% of the juveniles was completely outside the social
group; these appear to result from early dispersal of juveniles rather than from brood parasitism, most likely resulting from
breakup of nearby groups. Principal females mated outside of their group (2.3%), or with an auxiliary male (2.3%), in the
remaining cases of parentage outside the principal pair. No matings were detected between close relatives (e.g. mother-son);
matings detected between the principal female and an auxiliary male followed a typical replacement of the principal female
by an unrelated immigrant female. Our finger-printing results indicate that: (1) current fitness benefits accruing to most
auxiliaries do not exceed their likely reproductive success had they dispersed successfully to a breeding position; (2) nearly
all wren mating is monogamous and (3) behavioral dominants (especially females) can monopolize breeding.

Alate trapping studies of a monogyne population of the fire ant Solenopsis geminata indicate that two sizes of gynes are produced. Macrogynes, which participate in late spring and summer mating flights, are larger, fattier, and more than twice as heavy as microgynes, which participate in fall mating flights. Three patterns of gyne production were observed in 51 colonies studied: 35 produced macrogynes only, 9 produced microgynes only, and 7 produced both morphs, contributing to both summer and fall mating flights. Behavioral evidence and rearing studies suggest that macrogynes found new colonies independently, whereas microgynes achieve colony queen status by infiltrating or being adopted by established colonies. Of the total number of female alates collected from the trapped colonies, 56% were microgynes. However, because of their smaller size and lower fat content, microgynes made up only one-third of the caloric investment in female alates. By measuring the thorax lengths of queens from mature colonies, we determined that at least 56% were macrogynes and 35% or more were microgynes. These results indicate that as a reproductive strategy, colony investment in microgyne production may have at least as high a payoff as investment in macrogyne production.This is publication #24 of the Fire Ant Research Team 相似文献

The study of reproductive isolation as a prerequisite to sympatric speciation has been limited by the focus on species that
have already experienced such isolation. However, a complete understanding of how such processes evolve depends on observing
taxa before they complete the speciation process. We studied the potential for sexual isolation in the polyphenic mole salamander,
Ambystoma talpoideum, using a series of laboratory and field experiments. This species consists of aquatic paedomorphic adults and terrestrial
metamorphic adults which are exhibited by both sexes and which mate in the same aquatic habitat. Previous field studies on
this species suggested that intermorph breeding would be less common during the winter months, because paedomorphic adults
begin breeding in early autumn and thus may have less energy available for reproduction in the winter. Laboratory experiments
conducted during the winter showed that the mating behavior of paedomorphic males occurred at a much lower frequency than
that of metamorphic males. In contrast, field experiments that best mimicked natural conditions revealed symmetric intermorph
breeding and included multiple paternity shared among males of each morph. This and other studies suggest that there is little
evidence of sexual isolation among morphs based on behavioral interactions alone. However, the potential for partial isolation
still occurs because of temporal and spatial differences in the frequencies of each morph in nature. Our results suggest that
further studies on this system, and other similar polyphenisms, may provide valuable insight into the mechanisms that underlie
the evolution of reproductive isolation. 相似文献
