ABSTRACT: This paper reports an analysis of the water budgets of 10 small (5–6 ha) diked areas (cells) within the Delta Marsh in southcentral Manitoba, Canada. The important terms in the water budget equation in this study were precipitation (P), water pumped in (SWI), evapotranspiration (ET), seepage in (GWI) and out (GWO), and change in storage (ΔS). P, SWI, and S were measured directly, and the sum of ET and GWO determined by difference. Estimating ET as 0.7 pan evaporation gave a seepage loss of 2.9 mm/day from the most intensively studied cell. Other methods of estimating ET produced estimates of GWO ranging from 2.4 to 3.8 mm/day. Water budgets for less intensively studied cells indicated seepage loss increased as perimeter available for seepage increased, but not proportionately. Efforts to measure seepage directly or estimate it from measured hydraulic gradients and hydraulic conductivity produced estimates much lower than the estimates from the water budget equation. Hydraulic conductivities were very heterogeneous, reflecting the sorting of water deposited sediments. Comparison of the hydraulic conductivities with seepage estimates from the water budget strongly suggests water movement downward as well as laterally from these diked areas. 相似文献

Macroinvertebrates were examined on an impounded valley marsh in Stonington, Connecticut, that has changed from aTypha-dominated system to one with typical salt-marsh vegetation during 13 years following the reintroduction of tidal exchange.
Animal populations on this restored impounded marsh were evaluated by comparing them with populations on a nearby unimpounded
valley marsh of roughly the same size. Populations of the high marsh snail,Melampus bidentatus Say, were quantitatively sampled along transects that extended from the water-marsh edge to the upland; those of the ribbed
mussel,Geukensia demissa Dillwyn, were sampled in low marsh areas on transects along the banks of creeks and mosquito ditches. The occurrence of other
marsh invertebrates also was documented, but their abundance was not measured. The mean density ofMelampus was 332±39.6 SE/m2 on the restored impounded marsh and 712±56.0 SE/m2 on the unimpounded marsh. However, since snails were larger on the restored impounded marsh, the difference in snail biomass
was less pronounced than the difference in snail density. MeanMelampus biomass was 4.96±0.52 SE g dry wt/m2 on the restored impounded marsh and 6.96±0.52 SE g dry wt/m2 on the unimpounded marsh. On the two marshes, snail density and biomass varied in relation to plant cover and other factors.
The density and biomass ofGeukensia at the edge of the marsh were comparable on the restored impounded and unimpounded marshes. Mean mussel densities ranged
from 80 to 240/m2 and mean mussel biomass varied from 24.8–64.8 g dry wt/m2 in different low marsh areas. In contrast, below the impoundment dike, meanGeukensia density was 1100±96.4 SE/m2 and meanGeukensia biomass was 303.6±33.28 SE g dry wt/m2. Variation in the endospermal protein patterns of seeds amongst and between inland and coastal populations of the dune building
grassLeymus arenarius was examined in Iceland. Seeds were collected from six coastal populations and five inland populations in Iceland. Endospermal
proteins (prolamins) of seeds were extracted with Tris-buffered 2-propanol (50%) and β-mercaptoethanol (0.5% v/v). We used
8% and 12% sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) to separate the prolamin protein bands, which
were stained with Coomassie Brilliant Blue R. Coastal populations were differentiated from inland populations on the basis
of high frequency of high molar weight (HMW) (110–150 kg mol−1) prolamins. Coastal populations had significantly higher proportions of their seed with more than two HMW prolamins, than
those of inland populations. Subtle differences were found among the HMW prolamins of coastal and inland populations indicating
limited intrapopulation variation. The dynamic environment of sand dunes probably influences the genetic composition of these
populations. The results suggest that seeds of the inland and coastal populations should be treated separately in sand dune

We studied the impact of livestock grazing on the distribution ofBranta bernicla bernicla (Dark-bellied Brent goose) in the Dutch Wadden Sea during spring. It was hypothesized that livestock facilitate short-term
(within-season) grazing for geese as well as long-term (over years). Therefore we measured grazing pressure by geese in salt
marsh and polder areas that were either grazed (spring-grazed) or ungrazed during spring (summer-grazed). Additionally, we
carried out a preference experiment with captive geese to test the preference between spring-grazed and summer-grazed polder
swards. We furthermore compared patterns of use by geese between long-term ungrazed and grazed salt marshes.
In May, there is a difference in grazing pressure by geese between polder pastures that are grazed or ungrazed during spring.
In this month, the ungrazed polder pastures are abandoned and the geese shift to either the grazed polder pastures or to the
salt marsh. Vegetation in the polder that had been spring-grazed had a lower canopy height and a higher tiller density than
summer-grazed vegetation. The captive geese in the preference experiment showed a clear preference for vegetation that had
been spring-grazed by sheep over ungrazed vegetation. Goose grazing pressure was negatively correlated to canopy height, both
on the polder and on the salt marsh. Within the plant communities dominated byFestuca rubra andPuccinellia maritima, marshes that were intensively grazed by livestock generally had higher grazing pressure by geese than long-term ungrazed

Experimental short-term desalination and drainage of salt marsh cores in greenhouse microcosms caused Spartina production to increase after one growing season, reflecting decreased salt stress and sulfide toxicity. However, production
thereafter declined, likely due to pyrite oxidation and acidification in drained treatments and sulfide accumulation in waterlogged
treatments.
A survey of longer-term (decadal) effects of diking on peat composition of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, marshes revealed
acidification, Fe(II) mobilization, and decreased organic content in drained sites. Despite the aerobic decomposition of organic
matter, abundant nutrients remained as sorbed NH4 and mineral-bound PO4. In diked, seasonally waterlogged sites, porewater alkalinity, sulfide, ammonium and orthophosphate were much lower, and
organic solids higher, than in adjacent natural marsh.
Seawater was added to cores from diked marshes to study the effects of tidal restoration. Salination of the drained peat increased
porewater pH, alkalinity, ammonium, orthophosphate, Fe, and Al; copious ammonium N, and Fe(II) for sulfide precipitation favored
Spartina growth. Salination of diked–waterlogged peat increased sulfate reduction and caused 6–8 cm of sediment subsidence. The resulting
increase in porewater sulfides and waterlogging decreased vigor of transplanted Spartina alterniflora. Results indicate that seawater restoration should proceed cautiously to avoid nutrient loading of surface waters in drained
sites or sulfide toxicity in diked–waterlogged marshes. 相似文献

The tsunami disaster in the Indian Ocean in December 2004 caused devastation of agricultural soils by salt water over wide
areas. Many rice fields located close to the coast were affected by the flood of seawater. Electric conductivity (EC) of soils
in tsunami-affected rice fields was found to be higher compared to unaffected fields 2 years after the tsunami. Four soil
amendments (gypsum, dolomite, cinnamon ash and rice-husk-charcoal) were tested for their influence on improving the yield
parameters of rice grown in a tsunami-affected and a non-affected area. Yield parameters were compared with an untreated control
of the same cultivar (AT362) and with a salt resistant rice variety (AT354). The salt resistant variety had the highest grain
yield. The two amendments gypsum and rice-husk-charcoal led to an increase in grain yield compared to the untreated control,
whereas dolomite and cinnamon ash had no significant effect on grain yield. 相似文献

Island biogeography theory and nestedness are two relevant and important concepts in biogeography and conservation. However,
their integration and application has not been examined for maintaining or maximizing species diversity, especially in arid
regions. The aim of this study is to investigate the ecological mechanisms related to the observed pattern of floristic diversity
and nestedness in the Lake Bardawil islets on the Mediterranean coast of Sinai Peninsula before the execution of the North
Sinai Agricultural Development Project (NSADP) that will threaten the ecosystem of the lake. Plant species on 15 islets were
identified and categorized into ecological groups related to their life-form, salt tolerance and succulence. Richness of total
plant species and their ecological groups were positively correlated with islet area, number of habitats and elevation, and
negatively with disturbance index. The temperature calculator detected highly significant nestedness for the entire flora
and all ecological groups. Distance from the mainland had no effect on either species richness or nested pattern of total
plant species and their ecological groups. Both the analyses of species richness and nested distribution yielded evidence
for a positive species-area relationship. Although nestedness was detected for the entire plant species and their ecological
groups, many species and islets exhibited idiosyncratic distribution. Idiosyncrasies could be mainly attributed to demographic
stochasticity which is an important character for species interaction and diversity maintenance in arid regions. Therefore,
in developing conservation strategies for the Lake Bardawil islets, it is important to incorporate spatial and temporal stability

Spartina alterniflora was transplanted into dieback areas of a salt marsh in southeast Louisiana at two elevations (ambient and +30 cm) with and
without macro- (N, P, and K) and micronutrient (Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn) additions to determine if transplant success is dependent
on increasing elevation or nutrients.Spartina alterniflora transplanted into elevated plots had more than twice the above- and belowground biomass as compared to nonelevated plots
after three months of growth. Additionally, there was significantly more vegetative reproduction (greater culm density and
number of newly produced culms) in elevated plots as compared to plots at ambient elevation. Macronutrient additions increased
culm densities only in elevated plots.Spartina alterniflora transplanted into nonelevated plots had lower survival rates even when transplants received nutrient additions. These results
suggest thatS. alterniflora may be transplanted successfully into degraded salt-marsh areas if elevation is increased. The addition of nutrients without

Invertebrate recolonization of fine-grained beneficial use schemes: An example from the southeast coast of England 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The disposal of maintenance dredged material constitutes one of the most important problems in coastal zone management. To
minimise ecological impacts, a number of ‘beneficial use’ options have developed whereby the material is regarded as a potential
resource and used to recharge or recreate intertidal habitats. This paper presents the results of a sampling programme to
investigate the macrofaunal recovery rates, and the underlying mechanisms responsible for them, following a beneficial use
scheme involving the placement of fine-grained dredged material on a salt marsh in southeast England.
Three stations in the recharge area and three reference stations, located within the same salt marsh system, were selected.
These stations were sampled prior to recharge (recharge stations only) then 1 week, 3, 6, 12 and 18 months after the recharge.
Sediment redox potentials (1, 2 and 4 cm sediment depths) were also measured on each sampling occasion. The results indicated
a rapid recolonization of the fauna typical of the surrounding salt marsh channels. All univariate parameters had recovered
after 3 months after the recharge. Active post-juvenile immigration is likely to have been the predominant recovery process.
Multivariate data analysis revealed that the community structure of the recharge stations, however, did not progress towards
those of the reference sites. Natural spatial variability in community structure at the scale of the recharge-reference station
distance, and differences in eventual tidal elevations are factors responsible for these differences. The need to carefully
assess reference site suitability in monitoring beneficial use schemes is discussed. 相似文献
