Invertebrate recolonization of fine-grained beneficial use schemes: An example from the southeast coast of England 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The disposal of maintenance dredged material constitutes one of the most important problems in coastal zone management. To
minimise ecological impacts, a number of ‘beneficial use’ options have developed whereby the material is regarded as a potential
resource and used to recharge or recreate intertidal habitats. This paper presents the results of a sampling programme to
investigate the macrofaunal recovery rates, and the underlying mechanisms responsible for them, following a beneficial use
scheme involving the placement of fine-grained dredged material on a salt marsh in southeast England.
Three stations in the recharge area and three reference stations, located within the same salt marsh system, were selected.
These stations were sampled prior to recharge (recharge stations only) then 1 week, 3, 6, 12 and 18 months after the recharge.
Sediment redox potentials (1, 2 and 4 cm sediment depths) were also measured on each sampling occasion. The results indicated
a rapid recolonization of the fauna typical of the surrounding salt marsh channels. All univariate parameters had recovered
after 3 months after the recharge. Active post-juvenile immigration is likely to have been the predominant recovery process.
Multivariate data analysis revealed that the community structure of the recharge stations, however, did not progress towards
those of the reference sites. Natural spatial variability in community structure at the scale of the recharge-reference station
distance, and differences in eventual tidal elevations are factors responsible for these differences. The need to carefully
assess reference site suitability in monitoring beneficial use schemes is discussed. 相似文献

The acute toxicity test is described in this experiment where the Collembola species Proisotoma minuta was exposed to herbicides in an artificial sea salt solution for seven days. The salt solution did not prohibit the insects' reproduction system. The seven day LD50 values for trifluralin, pendimethalin, metolachlor, prometryn, paraquat, atrazine, fluometuron, and diuron were 3.48, 10.4, 12.4, 13.0, 23.1, 33.4, 250, and 711 mg L?1, respectively. A good correlation between toxicity of the compounds and their lipophilicity and vapor pressure was recorded in this study. 相似文献

The case of poverty in the abundance of plenty mostly extant in resource rich countries is also evident along the coast of Ghana. Despite the huge salt production potential of the country’s coast, the renewable resource remains highly untapped as output levels are less than 10% of potential output. Meanwhile many of the indigenes of coastal communities wallow in poverty amidst high levels of unemployment. Findings of this study reveal that key obstacles inhibiting the growth of the sector relates to land acquisition, lack of investment, and low level of technology adoption. The study therefore recommends a mix of strategies aimed at rejuvenating the sector to achieve optimum harnessing of salt deposits. This would help diversify the export markets of Ghana and help her industrialization drive towards achieving an upper-middle income country status in the short-to-medium-term. 相似文献

通过水稻盆栽试验,在高低两种自然富硒土壤上种植3种水稻。结果发现,水稻籽粒Se含量与土壤中Se含量呈正相关,而土壤硒含量过高会降低水稻籽粒的产量。在添加Cd下,高富硒土种植的博优998、秋优998、金稻优998等水稻籽粒Cd含量比低富硒土分别降低了26.99%、10.28%、13.48%,说明土壤中适量的Se对水稻籽粒吸收Cd有拮抗作用。另外,秋优998富集Se、Cd的能力最强,生物产量最低,金稻优998达到富硒效果,而富集Cd的能力最弱,且生物产量较高,在筛选品种时,应优选金稻优998。 相似文献

The nereid polychaete Hediste diversicolor was frequently used as biomonitor of heavy metals contamination in estuaries. In the present work, the bioaccumulation of five heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb) in tissues of H. diversicolor collected from six salt marshes in the lagoon of Venice is studied by analysing the relationships between concentrations of the operationally-defined reactive fraction of trace metals in sediments and total concentrations in tissues. The characterisation of sediment samples shows a clear distinction between sites near and far from the Industrial Zone; no analogous pattern is observed for tissue concentrations suggesting that metal bioaccumulation is controlled by complex interactions between metal bioavailability and physiological factors. Considering relationships between metals, strong inverse correlations are observed in polychaetes and sediments for Cu and Cr concentrations suggesting a possible interaction between these two metals. The role played by organic matter (OM) in the availability of metal is highlighted considering inverse relationships found between bioaccumulation factors for Cu, Cr, Cd and OM. 相似文献

The amount of ecological restoration required to mitigate or compensate for environmental injury or habitat loss is often
based on the goal of achieving ecological equivalence. However, few tools are available for estimating the extent of restoration
required to achieve habitat services equivalent to those that were lost. This paper describes habitat equivalency analysis
(HEA), a habitat-based “service-to-service” approach for determining the amount of restoration needed to compensate for natural
resource losses, and examines issues in its application in the case of salt marsh restoration. The scientific literature indicates
that although structural attributes such as vegetation may recover within a few years, there is often a significant lag in
the development of ecological processes such as nutrient cycling that are necessary for a fully functioning salt marsh. Moreover,
natural variation can make recovery trajectories difficult to define and predict for many habitat services. HEA is an excellent
tool for scaling restoration actions because it reflects this ecological variability and complexity. At the same time, practitioners
must recognize that conclusions about the amount of restoration needed to provide ecological services equivalent to those
that are lost will depend critically on the ecological data and assumptions that are used in the HEA calculation. 相似文献

A detailed evaluation of past wetland restoration projects in San Francisco Bay was undertaken to determine their present status and degree of success. Many of the projects never reached the level of success purported and others have been plagued by serious problems. On the basis of these findings, it is debatable whether any sites in San Francisco Bay can be described as completed, active, or successful restoration projects at present. In spite of these limited accomplishments, wetland creation and restoration have been adopted in the coastal permit process as mitigation to offset environmental damage or loss of habitat. However, because the technology is still largely experimental, there is no guarantee that man-made wetlands will persist as permanent substitutes for sacrificed natural habitats. Existing permit policies should be reanalyzed to insure that they actually succeed in safeguarding diminishing wetlands resources rather than bartering them away for questionable habitat substitutes. Coastal managers must be more specific about project requirements and goals before approval is granted. Continued research on a regional basis is needed to advance marsh establishment techniques into a proven technology. In the meantime, policies encouraging or allowing quid pro quo exchanges of natural wetlands with man-made replacements should proceed with caution. The technology and management policies used at present are many steps ahead of the needed supporting documentation. 相似文献

以小叶章沼泽化草甸为对象,利用静态箱-气相色谱法,在三江平原进行野外原位试验,研究氮输入对沼泽湿地碳平衡及其各分量的影响.氮素输入后,沼泽湿地生态系统总初级生产力提高,生物量增大,分别比对照处理增加了10%和26.8%.同时,CH4和生态系统呼吸CO2排放量提高,而生态系统CO2净交换(NEE)和净碳(CO2和CH4都转化成对应的碳)交换降低,CO2、CH4和NEE的季节变化动态未改变.2004年整个生长季氮输入处理的CO2和CH4排放量分别比对照处理升高了34%和145%,NEE和净碳交换分别降低了70%和81.6%,但整个生长季2个处理仍然表现为碳的净吸收.氮输入没有改变沼泽湿地碳“汇”的功能,只是减弱了其作为碳“汇”的功能. 相似文献

Fluoridated salt is an effective method to reduce dental decay in the population at large, in particular in settings where the more frequently used method of fluoridated water is not feasible due to unreliable water supplies. A salient problem of regular dosage and monitoring of fluoride in salt is its variable level at the industrial level. To evaluate the relative advantages of the present monitoring method used in Mexico, samples of domestic fluoridated salt were analysed by two comparative methods to determine their fluoride content. One of the methods employed was the relevant Mexican Offcial Norm (based on an acetic acid, sodium chloride, trans-1,2-diamine, cyclohexane N,N,N',N' tetracetic acid buffer solution) and the other was an alternative electrochemical methodology (based on an acetic acid, sodium chloride, sodium citrate buffer solution). The cost of the chemicals involved and simplicity of the alternative method, along with the equivalent precision of its results, makes it an interesting choice for the large scale analysis of fluoridated salt. 相似文献

The effect of road salt on the eating of bacteria or bacterivory by the ciliate, Tetrahymena thermophila, was followed in non-nutrient Osterhout's solution with Escherichia coli expressing green fluorescent protein. Bacterivory was impaired at between 0.025 and 0.050% w/v but the ciliates appeared to have normal morphologies and motilities, whereas at above 0.1%, bacterivory was blocked and many ciliates died. By contrast, E. coli remained viable, suggesting salt could alter predator-prey relationships in microbial communities. In nutrient medium, salt was not toxic and the ciliates grew. After growth in salt, ciliates consumed bacteria in 0.2% salt, indicating the salt acclimation of bacterivory. Bacteria and ciliates were added to urban creek samples to compare their capacity to support exogenous bacterivory. Even though samples were collected weekly for a year and be expected to have fluctuating salt levels as a result of deicing, all creek samples supported a similar level of bacterivory. 相似文献
