We used the multilocus DNA fingerprinting technique, amplified fragment length polymorphism, to examine parentage of 902 offspring from eight experimental populations of the dung beetle, Onthophagus taurus. The males of this species exhibit a suit of morphological and behavioural traits that characterise alternative mating tactics. Hornless minor males sneak copulations with females that are guarded by horned major males. Our aims were to provide a prospective assessment of the potential role of frequency dependence in the maintenance of alternative mating tactics, to assess the levels of polyandry, and to determine the patterns of sperm usage by multiply mated females. The average proportion of offspring sired by major and minor males did not co-vary with the relative frequency of each morph present in experimental populations. However, there was some indication that the effective mating frequency (number of females producing offspring sired by a given male) of major and minor males may exhibit frequency dependence. Mating success of both male types declined with increasing numbers of major males. Paternity was positively associated with effective mating frequency. Females produced offspring sired from between one and eight males and, on average, paternity was distributed equally amongst a females mates, regardless of the number of males mated. Differences in fertilisation success among males were not associated with alternative male phenotypes. Neither did a males fertilisation success depend on his genetic dissimilarity with the female. These results are discussed in the context of the evolution of alternative mating strategies, and mechanisms of postcopulatory sexual selection.Communicated by N. Wedell

There is increasing evidence that sexual selection may be intense even in socially monogamous birds, resulting from both mate choice and sperm competition. We studied these two modes of sexual selection experimentally by removing paired male collared flycatchers, Ficedula albicollis, from their mates for 2 days and investigating the factors that influenced the likelihood of a replacement male appearing and how the removals influenced paternity. Replacement males (usually neighbouring males) appeared at 81% (n = 37) of nests where males were removed. The likelihood of this appearance was unaffected by the probable reproductive value of the female's clutch to the replacing male. A replacement was, however, less likely when the original male had a large forehead patch, a trait previously shown to be subject to sexual selection in this population. Experimental removal of males increased the level of sperm competition: 74% of experimental broods were multiply sired, compared to 29% of unmanipulated broods in a previous study. Only two factors predicted how paternity was shared between males: removed males fathered more young if removed closer to laying, and if they had larger forehead patches. The former result is consistent with last-male sperm precedence determining paternity, whereas the latter adds to other evidence that forehead patch size is the target of female preference in this species. Our results suggest that females exert some control over male replacement, and also that they may influence the fertilisation success of males by behavioural means. This paper investigates the determinants of individual spacing behaviour in a desert baboon population (Papio cynocephalus ursinus). Patterns of neighbour proximity and neighbour density were examined among adults in four groups under different ecological and social conditions (through instantaneous sampling during focal follows). Initial analysis of these data shows that (1) the use of vertical substrates (refuges such as tall trees and cliff faces) can confound patterns of spacing, and (2) individual differences in spacing can depend on the spatial scale over which it is measured. To minimise these substrate and scale effects, this analysis focuses on animals which are off refuges and examines spacing behaviour through its underlying statistical `dimensions' (identified through factor analysis). Analysis of these dimensions indicates that sex, group size, activity-habitat and female reproductive state can all have independent effects on spacing: (1) males are more dispersed than females in smaller groups, (2) male and female dispersion increases with time spent in foraging habitats, and (3) female dispersion is reduced during lactation. According to the hypotheses tested, these results indicate that feeding competition only affects spacing behaviour during foraging while predation risk plays little or no role in spacing. Most aspects of spacing behaviour are best explained by male reproductive strategies and their social repercussions. Received: 25 May 1998 / Accepted after revision: 18 July

The populations of many species are structured such that mating is not random and occurs between members of local patches.
When patches are founded by a single female and all matings occur between siblings, brothers may compete with each other for
matings with their sisters. This local mate competition (LMC) selects for a female-biased sex ratio, especially in species
where females have control over offspring sex, as in the parasitic Hymenoptera. Two factors are predicted to decrease the
degree of female bias: (1) an increase in the number of foundress females in the patch and (2) an increase in the fraction
of individuals mating after dispersal from the natal patch. Pollinating fig wasps are well known as classic examples of species
where all matings occur in the local patch. We studied non-pollinating fig wasps, which are more diverse than the pollinating
fig wasps and also provide natural experimental groups of species with different male morphologies that are linked to different
mating structures. In this group of wasps, species with wingless males mate in the local patch (i.e. the fig fruit) while
winged male species mate after dispersal. Species with both kinds of male have a mixture of local and non-local mating. Data
from 44 species show that sex ratios (defined as the proportion of males) are in accordance with theoretical predictions:
wingless male species<wing-dimorphic male species<winged male species. These results are also supported by a formal comparative
analysis that controls for phylogeny. The foundress number is difficult to estimate directly for non-pollinating fig wasps
but a robust indirect method leads to the prediction that foundress number, and hence sex ratio, should increase with the
proportion of patches occupied in a crop. This result is supported strongly across 19 species with wingless males, but not
across 8 species with winged males. The mean sex ratios for species with winged males are not significantly different from
0.5, and the absence of the correlation observed across species with wingless males may reflect weak selection to adjust the
sex ratio in species whose population mating structure tends not to be subdivided. The same relationship is also predicted
to occur within species if individual females adjust their sex ratios facultatively. This final prediction was not supported
by data from a wingless male species, a male wing-dimorphic species or a winged male species.

Differential use of stored sperm during oviposition in the damselfly Calopteryx splendens xanthostoma (Charpentier)
Female Calopteryx splendens xanthostoma (Charpentier) (Odonata), have two discrete sperm storage organs, the bursa copulatrix and the paired spermathecae. We used
the Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA(RAPD) profiling technique to determine from which sperm storage organ spermatozoa were used to fertilise eggs during behaviourally
distinct oviposition bouts. During oviposition bouts following remating sperm from the bursa copulatrix are largely used to
fertilise eggs, but when females avoid remating before an oviposition bout the sperm used to fertilise eggs are derived mainly
from the paired spermathecae. Our observations suggest that female C. s. xanthostoma can avoid male paternity assurance mechanisms by a combination of behavioural and anatomical adaptation: the reason(s) they
do so is unclear.

Since the mating of the parasitoid wasp Melittobia australica occurs on their eclosed hosts, the sex ratio is predicted to follow the local mate competition (LMC) theory. However, while LMC models predict that the sex ratio will increase from female-biased toward a 1:1 ratio with an increase in the number of foundresses, the observed female-biased sex ratios (1–5% males) show little increase in response to an increased foundress number. Lethal combat among adult males may serve as an explanation for this observed phenomenon. Using a microsatellite DNA marker, we first examined the individual sex ratio of two foundresses who had sequentially parasitized the same host. Both foundresses produced an extremely female-biased clutch and the sex ratios of the second foundress were only slightly less biased than that of the first. A small number of sons from both foundresses emerged at a constantly low rate over a prolonged period, resulting in a temporal mixture of emerging males derived from both the foundresses. Second, we conducted a one-on-one arena experiment to examine the combat level in relation to the relatedness of the opponents. Almost all the later-emerging males were killed by previously eclosed males irrespective of whether they were sibs or non-sibs. These results suggest that each foundress should not produce males in a single burst, but continue to produce male eggs at a constantly low rate in order to avoid the high mortality of her own sons by lethal male-male combat. This combat may be one of factors in explaining the extremely female-biased sex ratio even with an increasing foundress number.Communicated by R.F.A.

Female ornaments in species with conventional sex roles often indicate individual quality, but the evolutionary forces maintaining
them are less clear. Sexual competition for breeding opportunities may represent an important role for female signals, especially
in polygynous species, but there is little experimental evidence for this. The wing patch size (WPS) of female collared flycatchers
indicates age and body condition and predicts social mating patterns. We challenged nest-building females with decoy females
of varying WPS and found that the aggressive response of residents increased with decoy WPS, suggesting a role for this female
ornament in territorial competition. Our results explain why female WPS predicts territorial distances when mated to a polygynous
male and indicate that the role of WPS in female competitive interactions is similar to that in males of the same population.

In socially feeding birds and mammals, as group size increases, individuals devote less time to scanning their environment
and more time to feeding. This vigilance “group size effect” has long been attributed to the anti-predatory benefits of group
living, but many investigators have suggested that this effect may be driven by scramble competition for limited food. We
addressed this issue of causation by focusing on the way in which the scan durations of free-living dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) decrease with group size. We were particularly interested in vigilance scanning concomitant with the handling of food items,
since a decrease in food handling times (i.e. scan durations) with increasing group size could theoretically be driven by
scramble competition for limited food resources. However, we showed that food-handling scan durations decrease with group
size in an environment with an effectively unlimited food supply. Furthermore, this food-handling effect was qualitatively
similar to that observed in the duration of standard vigilance scans (scanning exclusive of food ingestion), and both responded
to changes in the risk of predation (proximity of a refuge) as one might expect based upon anti-predator considerations. The
group size effects in both food-handling and standard scan durations may reflect a lesser need for personal information about
risk as group size increases. Scramble competition may influence vigilance in some circumstances, but demonstrating an effect
of competition beyond that of predation may prove challenging.
