Rarefaction estimates how many species are expected in a random sample of individuals from a larger collection and allows
meaningful comparisons among collections of different sizes. It assumes random spatial dispersion. However, two common dispersion
patterns, within-species clumping and segregation among species, can cause rarefaction to overestimate the species richness
of a smaller continuous area. We use field studies and computer simulations to determine (1) how robust rarefaction is to
nonrandom spatial dispersion and (2) whether simple measures of spatial autocorrelation can predict the bias in rarefaction
estimates. Rarefaction does not estimate species richness accurately for many communities, especially at small sample sizes.
Measures of spatial autocorrelation of the more abundant species do not reliably predict amount of bias. Survey sites should
be standardized to equal-sized areas before sampling. When sites are of equal area but differ in number of individuals sampled,
rarefaction can standardize collections. When communities are sampled from different-sized areas, the mean and confidence
intervals of species accumulation curves allow more meaningful comparisons among sites.

Network structure and parasite transmission in a group living lizard, the gidgee skink, <Emphasis Type="Italic">Egernia stokesii</Emphasis> 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

Gidgee skinks (Egernia stokesii) form large social aggregations in rocky outcrops across the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. Group members share refuges
(rock crevices), which may promote parasite transmission. We measured connectivity of individuals in networks constructed
from patterns of common crevice use and observed patterns of parasitism by three blood parasites (Hemolivia, Schellackia and Plasmodium) and an ectoparasitic tick (Amblyomma vikirri). Data came from a 1-year mark-recapture study of four populations. Transmission networks were constructed to represent possible
transmission pathways among lizards. Two lizards that used the same refuge within an estimated transmission period were considered
connected in the transmission network. An edge was placed between them, directed towards the individual that occupied the
crevice last. Social networks, a sub-set of same-day only associations, were small and highly fragmented compared with transmission
networks, suggesting that non-synchronous crevice use leads to more transmission opportunities than direct social association.
In transmission networks, lizards infested by ticks were connected to more other tick-infested lizards than uninfected lizards.
Lizards infected by ticks and carrying multiple blood parasite infections were in more connected positions in the network
than lizards without ticks or with one or no blood parasites. Our findings suggest higher levels of network connectivity may
increase the risk of becoming infected or that parasites influence lizard behaviour and consequently their position in the
network.

Animal groups arise from individuals’ choices about the number, characteristics, and identity of associates. Individuals make
these choices to gain benefits from their associations. As the needs of an individual change with its phenotype, so too we
expect the nature of its associations to vary. In this paper, we investigate how the social priorities of male plains zebra
(Equus burchelli) depend on reproductive state. An adult male is either a bachelor, and lacking mating access, or a stallion defending a harem.
Multiple harems and bachelor males aggregate in larger herds. Herds frequently split and merge, affording males opportunities
to change associates. Over a 4-year period, we sampled the herd associations in a population of 500–700 zebras. To isolate
the effects of reproductive state on male social behavior, we account for potential confounding factors: changes in population
size, grouping tendencies, and sampling intensity. We develop a generally applicable permutation procedure, which allows us
to test the null hypothesis that social behavior is independent of male status. Averaging over all individuals in the population,
we find that a typical bachelor is found in herds containing significantly more adults, bachelors, and stallions than the
herds of a typical stallion. Further, bachelors’ bonds with each other are more persistent over time than those among stallions.
These results suggest that bachelors form cohesive cliques, in which we may expect cooperative behaviors to develop. Stallion–stallion
associations are more diffuse, and less conducive to long-term cooperation.

Adaptive, or 'learning by doing', approaches are often advocated as a means of providing increased understanding within natural resource management. However, a number of organisational and social issues need to be resolved if these approaches are to be used successfully. A case study in the South Island high country of New Zealand is used to review what is needed to support an ongoing community-based monitoring and adaptive management programme. First, the case study is described, paying attention to the social context of the resource management problem. The results of a workshop that explored this problem are then outlined, along with a proposed information flow suggested by participants. Requirements for future steps to resolve these problems (such as information protocols and a multi-stakeholder information system) are discussed. Finally, some broad lessons are drawn from this exercise that could help others developing similar approaches. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this paper is to explore the validity of the old analogy that “soil is like a sponge.” Laboratory experiments were conducted to measure two hydrologic properties of porous media: drainage under gravity, and water potential curves. A tipping bucket rain gage connected to a data logger was used to measure the rate at which water drained under the force of gravity from a trough filled with four saturated porous media ‐ cellulose sponges, topsoil, peat, and a medium sand. Pressure plate techniques were used to determine water potential curves for soil materials and sponges. In terms of relative cumulative discharge from the trough, sponges were intermediate between peat and topsoil. Because of their tremendous water‐holding capacity, sponges discharged more than 2.5 times as much water as did peat. The water potential curve for sponges was fairly flat, like that of topsoil, but the high water content across all pressures (0.30–15.0 bars) indicated some similarity to peat. The results of these experiments suggest that the general patterns of water retention and release in soil materials and sponges are similar and vary only in degree. 相似文献

Little is known about how cryptic colouration influences prey search in near-surface aquatic habitats, although such knowledge
is critical for understanding the adaptive value of colour crypsis as well as the perceptive constraints influencing foraging
behaviour in these environments. This study had two main aims: (1) to investigate how background colour matching by prey affects
foraging efficiency by brown trout parr and (2) to investigate how foraging ability on cryptic and conspicuous prey is affected
by fish size at age (reflecting dominance). We addressed these questions by training wild brown trout parr to forage individually
on live brown-coloured maggots on a cryptic (brown) or conspicuous (green) background. A separate experiment confirmed the
absence of trout preference for brown or green substrate. The results show that prey background colour matching increases
search time in brown trout. Search time generally decreased by learning, but conspicuous prey remained an easier prey to find
throughout the six training trials. Thus, perceptive constraints appear to limit search efficiency for cryptic prey, suggesting
that cryptic colouration can confer survival benefits to prey in natural environments. Smaller fish generally found conspicuous
prey faster than larger individuals, whereas search time for cryptic prey was not influenced by body size. This suggests that
smaller individuals compensate for inferior competitive ability by increasing foraging activity rather than improving cognitive
ability. The technique of varying cognitive demands in behavioural tasks could be used more in future studies aimed at distinguishing
motivational effects from cognitive explanations for variation in behavioural performance. 相似文献

In mammalian polygynous mating systems, male reproductive effort consists mainly of male–male competition and courting of
females, which entail substantial somatic costs. Males are thus expected to adjust their reproductive effort according to
their age and condition. In this study, we examined how activity budgets of male mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus), a polygynous ungulate, varied with age in a marked population over two periods: (1) summers 1995–2006 and (2) ruts 2004–2006.
We then assessed if the proportions of time spent in male–male competition and courtship behaviors were influenced by age-specific
body mass and social rank during the rut. Males spent most of their time foraging and resting during summer, and rested more
and foraged less with increasing age. During the rut, pronounced shifts in activity budgets occurred as juveniles (1–2 years)
increased time spent foraging, whereas adults (≥3 years) increased standing and time spent in social interactions at the expense
of foraging. At old age, reproductive effort either stabilized or decreased slightly, providing weak support for the ‘mating
strategy–effort’ hypothesis, predicting that courtship behaviors should peak in prime-aged males. Age-specific body mass did
not affect time spent in male–male competition, but was positively related with time spent in courtship behaviors, providing
support for the ‘individual quality’ hypothesis, predicting that males with more resources at the start of the rut should
spend more time in mating-related activities. Age-specific social rank did not affect reproductive effort. Surviving to prime
age while increasing mass each year should thus allow male ungulates to gain greater ability to court estrus females. 相似文献

Conflicts of interest among genetically heterogeneous nestmates in social insect colonies have been emphasized as driving
colony resource allocation. However, potential intracolonial conflicts may not actually be realized so that resource allocation
could be shaped primarily by among-colony selection that maximizes colony productivity. To elucidate the causal basis of patterns
of resource allocation, I experimentally manipulated three fundamental aspects of colony social structure (relatedness among
workers, relatedness among larvae, and queen presence) in the ant Temnothorax curvispinosus and measured effects on colony resource allocation to new workers, gynes, and males. The experimental manipulations had widespread
effects on patterns of colony resource allocation, but there was little evidence for realized conflicts over the sex ratio
and caste ratio. Decreasing nestmate relatedness caused decreased colony productivity, suggesting that more closely related
nestmates have more favorably interacting phenotypes. Together, these results suggest that resource allocation in T. curvispinosus may be shaped more by among-colony selection than intracolonial conflict, leading to queen–worker–brood coadaptation. 相似文献

Despite increasingly large investments, the potential ecological effects of river restoration programs are still small compared
to the degree of human alterations to physical and ecological function. Thus, it is rarely possible to “restore” pre-disturbance
conditions; rather restoration programs (even large, well-funded ones) will nearly always involve multiple small projects,
each of which can make some modest change to selected ecosystem processes and habitats. At present, such projects are typically
selected based on their attributes as individual projects (e.g., consistency with programmatic goals of the funders, scientific
soundness, and acceptance by local communities), and ease of implementation. Projects are rarely prioritized (at least explicitly)
based on how they will cumulatively affect ecosystem function over coming decades. Such projections require an understanding
of the form of the restoration response curve, or at least that we assume some plausible relations and estimate cumulative
effects based thereon. Drawing on our experience with the CALFED Bay-Delta Ecosystem Restoration Program in California, we
consider potential cumulative system-wide benefits of a restoration activity extensively implemented in the region: isolating/filling
abandoned floodplain gravel pits captured by rivers to reduce predation of outmigrating juvenile salmon by exotic warmwater
species inhabiting the pits. We present a simple spreadsheet model to show how different assumptions about gravel pit bathymetry
and predator behavior would affect the cumulative benefits of multiple pit-filling and isolation projects, and how these insights
could help managers prioritize which pits to fill. 相似文献

We conducted case studies of three successful examples of collaborative, community-based natural resource conservation and development. Our purpose was to: (1) identify the functions served by interactions within the social networks of involved stakeholders; (2) describe key structural properties of these social networks; and (3) determine how these structural properties varied when the networks were serving different functions. The case studies relied on semi-structured, in-depth interviews of 8 to 11 key stakeholders at each site who had played a significant role in the collaborative projects. Interview questions focused on the roles played by key stakeholders and the functions of interactions between them. Interactions allowed the exchange of ideas, provided access to funding, and enabled some stakeholders to influence others. The exchange of ideas involved the largest number of stakeholders, the highest percentage of local stakeholders, and the highest density of interactions. Our findings demonstrated the value of tailoring strategies for involving stakeholders to meet different needs during a collaborative, community-based natural resource management project. Widespread involvement of local stakeholders may be most appropriate when ideas for a project are being developed. During efforts to exert influence to secure project approvals or funding, however, involving specific individuals with political connections or influence on possible sources of funds may be critical. Our findings are consistent with past work that has postulated that social networks may require specific characteristics to meet different needs in community-based environmental management. 相似文献
