Response of Organic and Inorganic Carbon and Nitrogen to Long-Term Grazing of the Shortgrass Steppe 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We investigated the influence of long-term (56 years) grazing on organic and inorganic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) contents of the plant–soil system (to 90 cm depth) in shortgrass steppe of northeastern Colorado. Grazing treatments included continuous season-long (May–October) grazing by yearling heifers at heavy (60–75% utilization) and light (20–35% utilization) stocking rates, and nongrazed exclosures. The heavy stocking rate resulted in a plant community that was dominated (75% of biomass production) by the C4 grass blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis), whereas excluding livestock grazing increased the production of C3 grasses and prickly pear cactus (Opuntia polycantha). Soil organic C (SOC) and organic N were not significantly different between the light grazing and nongrazed treatments, whereas the heavy grazing treatment was 7.5 Mg ha–1 higher in SOC than the nongrazed treatment. Lower ratios of net mineralized N to total organic N in both grazed compared to nongrazed treatments suggest that long-term grazing decreased the readily mineralizable fraction of soil organic matter. Heavy grazing affected soil inorganic C (SIC) more than the SOC. The heavy grazing treatment was 23.8 Mg ha–1 higher in total soil C (0–90 cm) than the nongrazed treatment, with 68% (16.3 Mg ha–1) attributable to higher SIC, and 32% (7.5 Mg ha–1) to higher SOC. These results emphasize the importance in semiarid and arid ecosystems of including inorganic C in assessments of the mass and distribution of plant–soil C and in evaluations of the impacts of grazing management on C sequestration. 相似文献

Without any incentive to clean up a contaminated site, remediation is often delayed until the site owner is compelled to act by regulatory agencies. In such a context, the selected technology is typically the one that will reach the remediation goals as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, this criterion is often met by overly expensive technologies, resulting in high and sometimes unaffordable total remediation costs, leading to a remediation with a negative net benefit. This study examines the effects of time constraint and benefit value on the optimal remediation strategy for a diesel-contaminated site. This strategy is developed using the technico-economic model METEORS, which takes into account the technology’s effectiveness, the uncertainty of the level of contamination, and the possibility of reducing this uncertainty through either an additional characterization (before selecting and applying a technology) or the monitoring of the remediation technology (during its use). Understanding the magnitude and location of soil phosphorus (P) accumulation in watersheds is a critical step toward managing runoff of this pollutant to aquatic ecosystems. Here, I examine the usefulness of urban–rural gradients, an emerging experimental design in urban ecology, for predicting extractable soil P concentrations across a rapidly urbanizing agricultural watershed in southern Wisconsin. I compare several measures of an urban–rural gradient to predictors of soil P such as soil type, slope, topography, land use, land cover, and fertilizer and manure use. Most of the factors that were expected to drive differences in soil P concentrations were found to be poor predictors of Bray-1 (extractable) soil P, which ranged from 4 to 660 ppm; while there were several significant relationships, most explained only a small proportion of the variation. A multiple linear regression model captured approximately 37% of the variation in the data using the urban–rural gradient, topography, land use, land cover, manure use, and soil type as predictors. There was a significant relationship between Bray-1 P concentration and each of the urban–rural gradients, but these relationships explained only between 2.6% and 3.3% of the variation in P concentrations. Three mathematical models, the runoff curve number equation, the universal soil loss equation, and the mass response functions,
were evaluated for predicting nonpoint source nutrient loading from agricultural watersheds of the Mediterranean region. These
methodologies were applied to a catchment, the gulf of Gera Basin, that is a typical terrestrial ecosystem of the islands
of the Aegean archipelago. The calibration of the model parameters was based on data from experimental plots from which edge-of-field
losses of sediment, water runoff, and nutrients were measured. Special emphasis was given to the transport of dissolved and
solid-phase nutrients from their sources in the farmers' fields to the outlet of the watershed in order to estimate respective
attenuation rates. It was found that nonpoint nutrient loading due to surface losses was high during winter, the contribution
being between 50% and 80% of the total annual nutrient losses from the terrestrial ecosystem. The good fit between simulated
and experimental data supports the view that these modeling procedures should be considered as reliable and effective methodological
tools in Mediterranean areas for evaluating potential control measures, such as management practices for soil and water conservation
and changes in land uses, aimed at diminishing soil loss and nutrient delivery to surface waters. Furthermore, the modifications
of the general mathematical formulations and the experimental values of the model parameters provided by the study can be
used in further application of these methodologies in watersheds with similar characteristics. 相似文献

Many small holder farmers in developing countries face problems of declining soil fertility and crop yields and insufficient
money to buy expensive inorganic fertilizers. The Sesbania fallow system, an agroforestry technology, seems to hold a key to these problems. Based on field studies in eastern Zambia,
this paper reports that fallow system has the potential to improve and sustain soil productivity in the small holder farms.
However, the paper also reports that the ability for subsistence farmers to adopt the Sesbania fallow system is affected by gender differences in resource allocation to productive resources and institutional, cultural,

Evaluation of groundwater and soil pollution in a landfill area using electrical resistivity imaging survey 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Landfills are sources of groundwater and soil pollution due to the production of leachate and its migration through refuse.
This study was conducted in order to determine the extent of groundwater and soil pollution within and around the landfill
of Seri Petaling located in the State of Selangor, Malaysia. The condition of nearby surface water was also determined. An
electrical resistivity imaging survey was used to investigate the leachate production within the landfill. Groundwater geochemistry
was carried out and chemical analysis of water samples was conducted upstream and downstream of the landfill. Surface water
was also analyzed in order to determine its quality.
Soil chemical analysis was performed on soil samples taken from different locations within and around the landfill in the
vadose zone (unsaturated zone) and below the water table (in the soil saturated zone). The resistivity image along line L–L1 indicated the presence of large zones of decomposed waste bodies saturated with highly conducting leachate. Analysis of trace
elements indicated their presence in very low concentrations and did not reflect any sign of heavy metal pollution of ground
and surface water or of soil.
Major ions represented by Na, K, and Cl were found in anomalous concentrations in the groundwater of the downstream bore hole,
where they are 99.1%, 99.2%, and 99.4%, respectively, higher compared to the upstream bore hole. Electrical conductivity (EC)
was also found in anomalous concentration downstream. Ca and Mg ions represent the water hardness (which is comparatively
high downstream). There is a general trend of pollution towards the downstream area. Sulfates (SO4) and nitrates (NO3) are found in the area in low concentrations, even below the WHO standards for drinking water, but are significantly higher
in the surface water compared to the groundwater. Phosphate (PO4) and nitrite (NO2), although present in low levels, are significantly higher at the downstream. There is no significant difference in the amount
of fluoride (F) in the different locations. In the soil vadose zone, heavy metals were found to be in their typical normal
ranges and within the background concentrations. Soil exchangeable bases were significantly higher in the soil saturated zone
compared to the vadose zone, and no significant difference was obtained in the levels of inorganic pollutants. With the exception
of Cd, the concentration ranges of all trace elements (Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb, and Ni) of Seri Petaling landfill soils were below
the upper limits of baseline concentrations published from different sources. 相似文献

Phleum pratense and Poa pratensis were significantly lower (P ≤ 0.001) on plots with more than 250 ppm copper. Above-ground biomass of Phleum pratense was also significantly lower on plots with copper levels above 250 ppm. Decreased mean grass density was found on plots with
pH < 6.4, but the only statistically significant difference was for Juncus balticus, which had increased density on plots with pH < 6.4. In contrast to the clear impacts of trace metals and pH on vegetation,

/ Environmental regulatory agencies are responsible for protecting human health and the environment in their constituencies. Their responsibilities include the identification, evaluation, and cleanup of contaminated sites. Leaking underground storage tanks (USTs) constitute a major source of subsurface and groundwater contamination. A significant portion of a regulatory body's efforts may be directed toward the management of UST-contaminated sites. In order to manage remedial sites effectively, vast quantities of information must be maintained, including analytical dataon chemical contaminants, remedial design features, and performance details. Currently, most regulatory agencies maintain such information manually. This makes it difficult to manage the data effectively. Some agencies have introduced automated record-keeping systems. However, the ad hoc approach in these endeavors makes it difficult to efficiently analyze, disseminate, and utilize the data. This paper identifies the information requirements for UST-contaminated site management at the Waste Cleanup Section of the Department of Environmental Resources Management in Dade County, Florida. It presents a viable design for an information management system to meet these requirements. The proposed solution is based on a back-end relational database management system with relevant tools for sophisticated data analysis and data mining. The database is designed with all tables in the third normal form to ensure data integrity, flexible access, and efficient query processing. In addition to all standard reports required by the agency, the system provides answers to ad hoc queries that are typically difficult to answer under the existing system. The database also serves as a repository of information for a decision support system to aid engineering design and risk analysis.
