ABSTRACT: Successful stream rehabilitation requires a shift from narrow analysis and management to integrated understanding of the links between human actions and changing river health. At study sites in the Puget Sound lowlands of western Washington State, landscape, hydrological, and biological conditions were evaluated for streams flowing through watersheds with varying levels of urban development. At all spatial scales, stream biological condition measured by the benthic index of biological integrity (B‐IBI) declined as impervious area increased. Impervious area alone, however, is a flawed surrogate of river health. Hydrologic metrics that reflect chronic altered streamflows, for example, provide a direct mechanistic link between the changes associated with urban development and declines in stream biological condition. These measures provide a more sensitive understanding of stream basin response to urban development than do treatment of each increment of impervious area equally. Land use in residential backyards adjacent to streams also heavily influences stream condition. Successful stream rehabilitation thus requires coordinated diagnosis of the causes of degradation and integrative management to treat the range of ecological stressors within each urban area, and it depends on remedies appropriate at scales from backyards to regional storm water systems. 相似文献

Removal of metal ions from the complexed solutions in fixed bed using a strong-acid ion exchange resin 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Fixed bed removal of equimolar metal ions (Co2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Sr2+) from aqueous solutions using a strong-acid resin was examined. The solution contained a water-soluble complexing agent including ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, nitrilotriacetic acid, and citric acid. Experiments were performed under different solution pH and molar concentration ratios of complexing agent to the total metals. It was shown from batch studies that the equilibrium exchange of metals and the resin mainly depended on solution pH, and partly on the type of complexing agent used. A mass transfer model was proposed to describe the breakthrough curves of the resin bed, which contained two parameters (τ and k) estimated from the observed breakthrough data. The calculated breakthrough curves agreed well with the measured ones (standard deviation <6%). In fixed bed tests at low pH (=2), the type of complexing agent had little effect on the breakthrough data. For a given complexing agent, the metal with a larger overall formation constant (Kf) showed a smaller exchange capacity. For a given metal ion, the complexing agent with a larger Kf also revealed a smaller exchange capacity. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: A flood-control dam was completed during 1979 on Bear Creek, a small tributary stream to the South Platte River in the Denver, Colorado, area. Before and after dam closure, repetitive surveys between 1977 and 1992 at five cross sections downstream of the dam documented changes in channel morphology. During this 15-year period, channel width increased slightly, but channel depth increased by more than 40 percent. Within the study reach, stream gradient decreased and median bed material sizes coarsened from sand in the pools and fine gravel on the rime to a median coarse gravel throughout the reach. The most striking visual change was from a sparse growth of streamside grasses to a dense growth of riparian woody vegetation. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Stream channel stability is affected by peak flows rather than average annual water yield. Timber harvesting and other land management activities that contribute to soil compaction, vegetation removal, or increased drainage density can increase peak discharges and decrease the recurrence interval of bankfull discharges. Increased peak discharges can cause more frequent movement of large streambed materials, leading to more rapid stream channel change or instability. This study proposes a relationship between increased discharge and channel stability, and presents a methodology that can be used to evaluate stream channel stability thresholds on a stream reach basis. Detailed surveys of the channel cross section, water surface slope, streambed particle size distribution, and field identification of bankfull stage are used to estimate existing bankfull flow conditions. These site specific stream channel characteristics are used in bed load movement formulae to predict critical flow conditions for entrainment of coarse bed material (D84 size fraction). The “relative bed stability” index, defined as the ratio of critical flow condition to the existing condition at bankfull discharge, can predict whether increased peak discharges will exceed stream channel thresholds. 相似文献
