Prenatal diagnosis of partial trisomy 12q: clinical presentations and outcome

We present a pregnant woman with a fetus prenatally diagnosed as 46, XY,der(4) t(4;12) (q35.1; q21.2). This defect resulted from the unbalanced segregation of a paternal balanced translocation, t(4;12) (q35.1; q21.2). Prenatal ultrasound revealed borderline ventriculomegaly, a thick nuchal fold, pericardial effusion, arthrogryposis, a single umbilical artery, and micropenis. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with whole chromosome painting probe and microarray-based comparative genomic hybridization analysis further confirmed chromosomal gain of terminal 12q. The woman had her pregnancy terminated at 20 weeks of gestational age. When compared with previously reported cases, the proband had characteristics common to the phenotypes of partial trisomy 12q, including an abnormal facial appearance and multiple anomalies. Additionally, this case had previously unreported phenotypes, such as arthrogryposis, a single umbilical artery, and a micropenis. Regarding the outcome of partial trisomy 12q, the fetuses carrying trisomies distal to 12q24 have a good chance of extended postnatal survival. In contrast, the cases with trisomies involving a larger amount of 12q likely die prenatally or within a few days after birth. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Derivative mine valuation: strategic investment decisions in competitive markets

Successful management in competitive markets requires evaluation methods that respond to global market dynamics and provide investors with relevant information to make strategic investment decisions. These strategic decisions include decisions on investment timing, feasibility study and risk management and mine operating options. Conventional methods do not have the built-in capabilities to help investors handle these strategic issues. Advances in modern finance have had profound impacts on financial markets for options, futures and collaterized securities and offer appropriate tools in solving these problems. In this paper, the authors have extended the Brennan and Schwartz mineral resource model to develop the derivative mine valuation method based on the dynamic arbitrage theory. A copper mining venture has been evaluated using the derivative mine valuation and conventional methods. The results show that the derivative mine valuation method allows investors to maximize the venture's market value by exercising these strategic options.

Trace analysis of airborne toluene diisocyanate as a pentafluorobenzyl derivative by gas chromatography with electron capture detection

Trace analysis of airborne toluene diisocyanate (TDI) vapor was accomplished by measuring the derivative using gas chromatography with electron‐capture detector after collecting gas samples with a microimpinger containing 2 ml toluene, 1 μl pentafluorobenzyl alcohol, and 1 μl triethylamine. The sampling efficiency was determined to be 99.4% for short‐term exposure level of TDI and the 2,4‐ and 2,6‐isomers of TDI were well separated. The derivative was identified to be a new compound with a molecular weight of 570 by mass spectrometry in fast atomic bombardment mode and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. This method is convenient and can be applied in the field where airborne TDI is in vapor form.
