Time constraints and multiple choice criteria in the sampling behaviour and mate choice of the fiddler crab,Uca annulipes 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
Active female sampling occurs in the fiddler crab Uca annulipes. Females sample the burrows of several males before remaining to mate in the burrow of the chosen partner. Females time larval
release to coincide with the following nocturnal spring tide and must therefore leave sufficient time for embryonic development
after mating. Here we show how this temporal constraint on search time affects female choosiness. We found that, at the start
of the sampling period (when time constraints are minimal), females selectively sample the larger males in the population.
Towards the end of the sampling period (when the temporal constraints increase the costs of sampling), females are less selective.
Furthermore, we suggest that the number of males sampled (and other indices of ‘‘sampling effort’’) may not be reliable indicators
of female choosiness and may not reflect the strength of female mating preferences under certain conditions. Burrow quality
also emerged as an important criterion in final mate choice. Burrow structure potentially influences reproductive success,
and mate acceptance based on burrow structure appears to involve a relatively invariant threshold criterion. Since there is
no relationship between male size and burrow quality, females are using at least two independent criteria when choosing potential
mates. We envisage mate choice as a two-stage process. First, females select which males to sample based on male size. They
then decide whether or not to mate with a male based on burrow features. This sampling process explains how two unrelated
variables can both predict male mating success.

Female bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) prefer dominant males; but what if there is no choice? 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Both intra-sexual competition between males and female mate choice have been found to affect mating behaviour in rodents.
We studied female choice in the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) under circumstances where male-male competition was excluded and the female could interact and mate freely with the males.
Mating behaviour was observed in two situations: (1) the female encountered two males with a clear dominance relationship;
and (2) the two males were equal in their social status. In all tests where a female in postpartum oestrus had a choice between
males of different social rank she mated with the dominant one. When choosing between an even pair of males there was no difference
in the frequency of lordotic responses, mounts or intromissions the female exhibited with either male before mating with one
of them. The mean ejaculation latency was significantly longer in the tests with an even pair of males than in the tests where
male hierarchy was clear. These results show that bank vole females are able to discriminate males according to their social
status and strongly prefer dominant males as mating partners. However, when the females were presented with two equal males,
they seemed to be unable to make a choice. The ability to choose the mating partner when the males are clearly different may
be an important direct benefit for the female in terms of time saved during mating and thus decreased risk of predation and
infanticide.

Previous studies of female choice in sage grouse Centrocercus urophasianus have implicated both the acoustic quality and repetition rate of the stereotyped strut display as putative cues for female
choice. Stages in the choice process at which specific components of male courtship display influence female decisions were
investigated using field observations of female pre-mating behavior. Females visited a subset of territorial males and then
actively chose one of these as a mate. The order in which males were visited suggested that females searched until an acceptable
mate was found, rather than employing a “best-of-n” tactic. Numbers of females visiting a male were related to differences
in an acoustical component of display (inter-pop interval) whereas the probability that a visiting female mated was related
to display rate (Table 3), indicating that initial attraction and active choice are influenced by different components of
display. In addition, inter-pop interval and display rate tended to covary inversely (Fig. 1), suggesting that attraction
and active choice may impose conflicting selection pressures on display performance.

Differential use of stored sperm during oviposition in the damselfly Calopteryx splendens xanthostoma (Charpentier) 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Female Calopteryx splendens xanthostoma (Charpentier) (Odonata), have two discrete sperm storage organs, the bursa copulatrix and the paired spermathecae. We used
the Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA(RAPD) profiling technique to determine from which sperm storage organ spermatozoa were used to fertilise eggs during behaviourally
distinct oviposition bouts. During oviposition bouts following remating sperm from the bursa copulatrix are largely used to
fertilise eggs, but when females avoid remating before an oviposition bout the sperm used to fertilise eggs are derived mainly
from the paired spermathecae. Our observations suggest that female C. s. xanthostoma can avoid male paternity assurance mechanisms by a combination of behavioural and anatomical adaptation: the reason(s) they
do so is unclear.

The Hamilton–Zuk hypothesis proposes that females prefer male secondary sexual traits because they are honest indicators of
parasite resistance. Despite the attention that this hypothesis has received, its role in sexual selection remains equivocal.
This study presents the first field test in guppies of two key predictions of the Hamilton–Zuk hypothesis: (1) that within
populations, the most highly ornamented males have the fewest parasites and (2) that among populations, males in high parasite
populations have the most conspicuous ornaments. Five hundred male guppies from 19 distinct populations in the Northern Range
of Trinidad were inspected for Gyrodactylus parasites and photographed. Eight measures of orange spot ornamentation were used to test the predictions: hue, saturation,
lightness, relative area, number, and area-weighted hue, saturation, and lightness. Parasite load had no significant effect
on any of these measures. There was also no relationship between orange spot ornamentation and parasite abundance among populations.
Guppies from high-predation environments had significantly more parasites, and their orange coloration was lighter and less
saturated than that in guppies from low-predation environments. Despite previous lab results, this study found no relationship
between parasite load and male orange spot ornamentation. 相似文献

In socially monogamous birds, females may express mate preferences when they first select a breeding partner, through divorce and subsequent breeding dispersal to a new partner and through extrapair mating. We examined settlement patterns, divorce and breeding dispersal in a sedentary Australian passerine, the brown thornbill (Acanthiza pusilla), in relation to two traits known to influence extrapair paternity (male age and male size). Settlement decisions, divorce and territory switching behaviour were all female strategies that reduced their likelihood of breeding with 1-year-old males. Females preferred to settle in territories with 2+ -year-old males, were more likely to divorce 1-year-old males, and only switched territories if they had an opportunity to form a new pair bond with an old male. In contrast, female settlement and divorce decisions were not influenced by male size. Female thornbills obtain a direct benefit from preferring older males as social mates because breeding success improves with male age in brown thornbills. Nevertheless, divorce rates in this species were low (14% of pair bonds were terminated by divorce), and individuals rarely switched territories following the death of a mate. Both of these mating strategies appeared to be primarily constrained by the distance adults moved to initiate a new pair bond (1–2 territories) and by the limited availability of unpaired older males in the immediate neighbourhood.Communicated by M. Male–male competition has historically been considered the major force driving sexual selection. However, female choice and inter-sexual conflict are increasingly recognized as important influences affecting differential mating and reproductive success. Many females exhibit preferences for particular males; however, male strategies may conflict with females’ ability to obtain their mate preferences. To influence paternity, females must affect both (1) whether or not sexual interactions occur, particularly during the periovulatory period (POP) and (2) the outcome of sexual interactions. This study focuses on the effectiveness of female choice in wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus). Over 2,600 h of data were collected on two habituated chimpanzee communities in the Taï National Park, Côte d’Ivoire. Female mate preferences were measured by quantifying proceptive and resistance behavior toward males in both the periovulatory period and non-POP phases of estrus. The efficacy of female preference was measured both (1) by measuring success rates of female proceptivity and resistance behaviors and (2) by determining how well measures of female mate preference (proceptivity and resistance rates) predict male mating success. Though male chimpanzees are clearly dominant to females, the results indicate that females could effectively resist male solicitations and, in most cases, unwanted copulations were averted. Both female proceptivity and resistance rates correlate (positively and inversely, respectively) with male mating success in POP. Outside POP, female proceptivity rates corresponded with male mating success, but resistance rates did not. Males (irrespective of rank) that were preferred by females obtained higher mating success compared to other males during the POP, suggesting that females were effective in their mate choice and that, despite clear male dominance, female choice influences paternity in wild chimpanzees. 相似文献

Females show mate preferences for males that are genetically dissimilar to themselves in a variety of taxa, but how females
choose these males is not clearly understood. In this study, we examined the effects of olfactory stimuli and genetic relatedness
on female mate choice in a small carnivorous marsupial, the agile antechinus (Antechinus agilis), during two breeding seasons. Captive female antechinus in oestrus were provided with a combination of male urine and body
scent from two novel males, one more genetically similar and one more dissimilar to the females, in a Y-maze olfactometer.
Genetic relatedness between females and pairs of males was determined using highly polymorphic, species-specific, microsatellite
markers. Females consistently chose to visit the scents of males that were genetically dissimilar to themselves first, spent
significantly more time near the source of those scents and showed more sexual and non-exploratory behaviours near those scents.
These data demonstrate that chemosensory cues are important in mate choice in the agile antechinus and that females prefer
males that are genetically dissimilar to themselves. 相似文献

Recent studies of monogamous tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) suggest that females may receive some type of genetic benefit from extra-pair fertilizations. In this study we attempted to determine what type of genetic benefits might be gained by females. We compared numerous morphological and behavioral traits (Table 1) of every male nesting on one grid of nest-boxes (n = 23) to determine what male traits were correlated with male success at gaining extra-pair fertilizations. DNA fingerprinting revealed an increase in the level of extra-pair paternity from the previous year (50% of broods contained extra-pair young in 1990 vs. 87% of broods in 1991), but no significant correlates of paternity. We found six extra-pair fathers at seven nests (20 nests had extra-pair young). The traits of these extra-pair males did not differ from those of the males they cuckolded. We discuss several reasons for this lack of difference, but argue that our results are not inconsistent with females choosing extra-pair males to enhance the genotypic quality of their offspring. Despite a complete search of the nest-box grid for extra-pair fathers, we were able to explain the paternity of just 21% (13/63) of all extra-pair young. This suggests that extra-pair fathers were either residents off our study grid or non-territorial floaters. Tree swallows are quite mobile and spend only part of the day at their nest prior to laying. In addition, we rarely see swallows visiting other grids of nest-boxes. Therefore, we suggest that most extra-pair copulations occur at some unknown location, possibly at a feeding or roosting area where females may be able to choose from many more potential extra-pair fathers than at their nest-site. 相似文献
