ABSTRACT: The shape of a river channel is linked to surrounding land use through interacting hydrologic and geologic processes. This study analyzes the relationship between the change in near‐stream land use and the shape of the adjacent river channel over time. Three watersheds in the foothills of the Venezuelan Andes that have experienced differing degrees of development were studied to determine river channel width, sinuosity, and position relative to surrounding land use. Change in land use over time was obtained from multiple‐date aerial photographs (1946 and 1980) referenced to 1996 Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) satellite imagery, and verified by field inspection. Measurements of land‐use type and amount and river channel morphology from the two dates were made using geographic information system (GIS) methods. The three watersheds differed in the extent of deforestation, the location of remaining forested land, and how much land‐use change had already occurred by 1946. Change in river channel morphology was greatest at the most deforested sites. Valley shape and channel constraint also had a discernible effect on change in channel morphology. This study introduces a method for analyzing change in coupled terrestrial‐aquatic systems based on multiple‐date, remotely sensed data and GIS analysis of spatial properties. The results document human impacts on river channels through a comparison of multiple watersheds over a 35‐year time interval.  相似文献

The natural flow regimes of rivers worldwide have been heavily altered through anthropogenic activities, and dams in particular have a pervasive effect on riverine ecosystems. Flow-regulation effects of dams negatively affect species diversity and abundance of a variety of aquatic animals, including invertebrates and fishes. However, the effects on semiaquatic animals are relatively unknown. We conducted anuran calling surveys at 42 study locations along the Broad and Pacolet Rivers in South Carolina to address the potential effects of flow regulation by damming on anuran occupancy and abundance. We estimated occupancy and abundance with Program PRESENCE. Models incorporated distance upstream and downstream from the nearest dam as covariates and urbanization pressure as an alternative stressor. Distance from dam was associated with occupancy of 2 of the 9 anuran species in our analyses and with abundance of 6 species. In all cases, distance downstream from nearest dam was a better predictor of occupancy and abundance than distance upstream from nearest dam. For all but one species, distance downstream from nearest dam was positively correlated with both occupancy and abundance. Reduced occupancy and abundance of anurans likely resulted from downstream alterations in flow regime associated with damming, which can lead to reduced area of riparian wetlands that serve as anuran breeding habitat. Our results showed that damming has a strong negative effect on multiple anuran species across large spatial extents and suggest that flow regulation can affect semiaquatic animals occupying riparian zones.  相似文献

针对我国入海河口生态环境问题突出、江河入海污染物总量不明的问题,梳理了我国江河入海水通量监测的历史,分析了我国江河入海水通量评估工作的现状以及"十四五"生态环境监测和海洋环境保护等规划的要求,提出污染物排海总量不明的主要原因是江河入海水通量监测未取得突破,具体表现在江河污染物入海通量未得到有效掌握、江河入海水通量监管体系未得以构建运行、江河入海水通量监测技术未得到建立和规范。结合在辽河口海洋环境在线监测试验基地开展的江河入海流量在线监测系统设计研究、江河入海水通量监测技术研发、江河入海水通量监测技术标准化研究、辽河入海水通量监测试验等工作,建议总结分析我国已开展的江河入海水通量监测试验工作,深入开展江河入海水通量监测顶层设计,加强江河入海水通量监测关键技术方法研究。  相似文献

ABSTRACT: In the Saskatchewan River Basin (365,000 km2), which drains the Canadian prairie from the Rocky Mountains east to Manitoba, concentrations of total solutes are usually within the range of 100 to 1000 mg/L. Total solutes levels in tributaries increase markedly from west to east across the basin, as mountain snowmelt and dilute surface runoff are replaced by ion-rich ground water and concentrated prairie runoff as the major influences on solute concentrations. In contrast, total solutes concentrations in main-stem rivers are nearly constant, ranging 200–300 mg/L, with only a small increase across the basin. Dilute mountain runoff dominates solute concentrations in main-stem rivers, despite the influx of increasingly ion-rich water from tributaries. The principal long-term trends in total solute concentrations across the basin, as revealed by linear and sine-curve regressions, were due to the construction of reservoirs, which depress the natural winter maximum in solute concentrations and disrupt the sinusoidal annual pattern, while sharply reducing seasonal variation. These regression methods did not show anticipated anthropogenic increases in salt load in the Red Deer or South Saskatchewan Rivers, but a trend of slowly increasing solutes concentrations (2 mg/L/yr) was detected for autumn flows in the lower Bow River. Municipal wastes from the City of Calgary or irrigation return flows are probably responsible for this increase.  相似文献

Procedures have been developed (a) to inject a tracer at a constant rate below the water surface at selected points across a stream and (b) to deal with suspended sediment. Mixing remained far from complete in relatively long channels, owing to channel and flow divergence with uncertainty where to sample downstream and which marginal sample values to include for flow calculation. These problems are encountered when mixing is largely dependent on transverse diffusion. Accurate and replicable results were obtained where dye was injected upstream and detected downstream from riffles that induced thorough turbulent mixing. Dye gaging should be practical in gorges or wherever flow is turbulent across the whole width of a channel.  相似文献

Abstract: In blackwater river estuaries, a large portion of external carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus load are combined in complex organic molecules of varying recalcitrance. Determining their lability is essential to establishing the relationship between anthropogenic loads and eutrophication. A method is proposed in which organic C, N, and P are partitioned into labile and refractory forms, based upon first‐order decay estimated by biochemical oxygen demand relative to total organic carbon, and C:N and C:P ratios as a function of organic carbon lability. The technique was applied in developing total maximum daily loads for the lower St. Johns, a blackwater Atlantic coastal plain river estuary in Northeast Florida. Point source organic nutrients were determined to be largely labile. Urban runoff was found to have the highest relative labile organic N and P content, followed by agricultural runoff. Natural forest and silviculture runoff were high in refractory organic N and P. Upstream labile C, N, and P loads were controlled by autochthonous production, with 34‐50% of summer total labile carbon imported as algal biomass. Differentiation of labile and refractory organic forms suggests that while anthropogenic nutrient enrichment has tripled the total nitrogen load, it has resulted in a 6.7‐fold increase in total labile nitrogen load.  相似文献

The National Weather Service is nearing the conclusion of a five year period of transition from index type catchment modelling to the use of conceptual hydrologic models. The decision to make this technological change was based on an extensive research project in which various catchment models were tested in a wide variety of basins and their strong and weak points ascertained. This project is described. Some of the problems involved in the changeover, which are discussed, are practical parameter optimization methods, computer requirements for the more complex technology, data requirements, fitting of the catchment model to major river systems, training of personnel and staffing problems.  相似文献

对青藏高原咸水湖蓬错、昂仁金错、打加错,淡水湖打加芒错、达格架温泉及各湖入湖支流阴、阳离子组成进行了分析.咸水湖阴离子以HCO-3、SO2-4为主,阳离子以Na+为主,属HCO3-SO4-Na和HCO3-Na型水;各湖支流及淡水湖阴离子以HCO-3或SO2-4为主,阳离子以Ca2+或Mg2+为主,属HCO3-Ca、HCO3-Ca-Mg、HCO3-Mg-Ca、HCO3-SO4-Ca、SO4-HCO3-Ca型水;达格架温泉阴离子以HCO-3为主,阳离子以Na+为主,属HCO3-Na型水.咸水湖主要受蒸发-结晶作用控制,各湖支流及淡水湖主要受碳酸盐岩风化控制,达格架温泉主要受热水-花岗岩作用控制.碳酸盐矿物沉淀时Ca2+优先Mg2+被移除,导致咸水湖具有较高的Mg2+/Ca2+比值.在阳离子组成端元贡献中,碳酸盐岩贡献最大(54%~79%),硅酸盐岩(13%~29%)和蒸发盐岩(4%~23%)次之,大气输入(3%~7%)最小.  相似文献

采用模糊数学法对扬州市内城河"十一五"期间的水质监测数据进行了综合评价。评价结果表明:扬州内城河水质较差,2005年-2010年内城河对Ⅴ类水质隶属度最大。总磷、氨氮和五日生化需氧量为主要污染因子。可见内城河水质较差的主要原因是有机类污染导致富营养化。整个"十一五"期间,内城河对Ⅴ类水质隶属度逐年减小,说明水质总体趋于好转。  相似文献
