ABSTRACT: The current dredge and fill practices in locating canals along the periphery of wetlands in south Florida are transforming natural basins that originally had primarily slower subsurface drainage to ones that discharge larger quantities of water faster, via a surface drainage system. The objective of this paper is to develop an analytical technique and a numerical model in quantifying the difference of surface and subsurface runoff before and after the construction of drainage canals, and for delineating the effects of drains on channel level and regional water tables in adjacent areas in south Florida. The surface runoff model is formulated on the climatic water balance technique, and the ground water model is treated as a one dimensional transient phenomenon that forms a nonlinear flow problem. Analytical solutions are derived through problem linearization. These two models are coupled to estimate the impact of drainage canals on the adjacent water table drawdown. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: A surrrogate-prarmeter approach to modeling groundwater basins is presented, which has the following advantages over current simulation-type methods: (i) conducivness to modeling nonhomogeneous and nonisotropic basins; (ii) there is no need to guess boundary conditions if accurate information is not available; (iii) the model is amenable to systematic calibration or identification through the use of optimization techniques; and (iv) compatibility with systematic algorithms for analyzing a wide range of management strategies. Since the parameter identification problem is large-scale and nonconvex, it is decomposed through application of generalized duality theory, into several subproblems of smaller size which are solved independently a number of times in order to achieve an overall solution. ABSTRACT Numerical and analytical solutions are developed for the distribution of a contaminant within an adsorbing porous medium in a unidirectional flow field subject to a step function for input concentration. The medium is considered to be homogeneous, isotropic, and areally finite. As a by-product, solutions are also obtained for the case of a non-absorbing porous medium. Stable isotope (18O–H2O, 2H–H2O 34S–SO4
2-) andhydrochemical data (SO4
2-, Fe-concentrations) have beenused to estimate the annual groundwater inflow and outflow of mining lake ML 111 and to calculate the total amount of dissolvedsulfate and iron that is carried into the lake by groundwater. The hydrological balance suggests an annual groundwater inflow of 23 700 m3 and an annual groundwater outflow of 15 700 m3. The calculation of the sulfur and iron balances yielded an annual sulfate input of 37 800 kg and an annual iron input of 7000 kg with the groundwater inflow. Furthermore it was shown that significant fluxes of these elements go into the lake sediments which results in continuous release of acidity in the lake water. 相似文献

三峡水库蓄水后 ,库水位将在 14 5~ 175m范围内波动 ,动水压力和水的软化作用是滑坡失稳的主要因素。库区滑坡稳定性评价规范要求采用不平衡推力法 ,但在考虑库水位下降产生的渗透力时 ,对渗流浸润线的确定缺乏理论依据 ,更没有实测数据的支持。为此 ,笔者运用一维的布辛内斯克方程 ,研究三峡水库蓄水后库水位下降和暴雨作用下滑坡渗流浸润线的变化规律 ;建立了渗流作用下滑坡稳定性评价模型 ;分析降速、渗透系数、暴雨等对滑坡稳定性的影响。 相似文献

ABSTRACT: High-capacity wells are used as a convenient and economical means of sampling groundwater quality. Although the inherent limitations of using these wells are generally recognized, little has been done to investigate how these wells actually sample groundwater. A semi-analytical particle tracking model is used to illustrate the influence of variable vertical contaminant distributions and aquifer heterogeneity on the composition of water samples from these wells during short pumping periods. The hypothetical pumping well used in the simulations is located in an unconfined, alluvial aquifer with a shallow water table and concentration gradients of nitrate-nitrogen contamination. This is a typical setting for many irrigated areas in the United States. The main conclusions are: (1) high-capacity wells underestimate the average amount of contamination within an aquifer; (2) shapes of concentration-time curves for high-capacity wells appear to be governed by the distribution of the contaminant and travel times to the well; (3) variables such as well construction, pumping rate, and hydrogeologic properties contribute to the magnitude of the concentration-time curves at individual high-capacity wells; and (4) a sampling strategy using concentration-time curves based on the behavioral characteristics of the well rather than individual samples will provide a much better framework for interpreting spatial contaminant distributions. 相似文献

Rapid industrialization and population growth in the north Mexican desert city of Ciudad Juarez are placing a serious strain on the city's municipal water resources. Water deliveries and service area have more than doubled over the past decade, and plans for additional expansion are presently being implemented. This expansion is already contributing to water table declines and salinity increases in the Mexican portion of the Heuco Bolson, the sole source of water for the city. Continued mining of the limited fresh water reserves should produce serious water supply problems in the near future. New estimates of future water consumption incorporated into a digital aquifer simulation model indicate that these problems may show up much sooner than was anticipated in previous investigations. The results of this study point to the need to accelerate the gathering of basic data on alternative water resources. The problems faced by Cd. Juarez are illustrative of the kinds of difficulties likely to confront other rapidly developing cities of the arid zone. 相似文献

Groundwater use is likely to be inefficient in the absence of regulation and hence there is substantial interest in optimal groundwater withdrawals over time. Under an optimal regime withdrawals, pumping lifts, and profits converge to steady-state levels. In this paper we show that optimal steady-state lifts, withdrawals, and marginal user costs can be readily calculated for multi-cell models of confined aquifers. Applications to the design of economically efficient groundwater management policies are discussed, comparisons to previous work and to the safe yield concept are made, and an illustrative example is given. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Similar groundwater problems associated with the Ogallala in western Oklahoma are beginning to affect aquifers much farther east. A rapid decline in the water table has been detected in Caddo County, Oklahoma. Ninety-six percent of the groundwater resources used in Caddo County are used for irrigation.
