Regionalization frameworks cluster geographic data to create contiguous regions of similar climate, geology and hydrology
by delineating land into discrete regions, such as ecoregions or watersheds, often at several spatial scales. Although most
regionalization schemes were not originally designed for aquatic ecosystem classification or management, they are often used
for such purposes, with surprisingly few explicit tests of the relative ability of different regionalization frameworks to
group lakes for water quality monitoring and assessment. We examined which of 11 different lake grouping schemes at two spatial
scales best captures the maximum amount of variation in water quality among regions for total nutrients, water clarity, chlorophyll,
overall trophic state, and alkalinity in 479 lakes in Michigan (USA). We conducted analyses on two data sets: one that included
all lakes and one that included only minimally disturbed lakes. Using hierarchical linear models that partitioned total variance
into within-region and among-region components, we found that ecological drainage units and 8-digit hydrologic units most
consistently captured among-region heterogeneity at their respective spatial scales using all lakes (variation among lake
groups = 3% to 50% and 12% to 52%, respectively). However, regionalization schemes capture less among-region variance for
minimally disturbed lakes. Diagnostics of spatial autocorrelation provided insight into the relative performance of regionalization
frameworks but also demonstrated that region size is only partly responsible for capturing variation among lakes. These results
suggest that regionalization schemes can provide useful frameworks for lake water quality assessment and monitoring but that
we must identify the appropriate spatial scale for the questions being asked, the type of management applied, and the metrics

Structural equation modeling is an advanced multivariate statistical process with which a researcher can construct theoretical concepts, test their measurement reliability, hypothesize and test a theory about their relationships, take into account measurement errors, and consider both direct and indirect effects of variables on one another. Latent variables are theoretical concepts that unite phenomena under a single term, e.g., ecosystem health, environmental condition, and pollution (Bollen, 1989). Latent variables are not measured directly but can be expressed in terms of one or more directly measurable variables called indicators. For some researchers, defining, constructing, and examining the validity of latent variables may be the end task of itself. For others, testing hypothesized relationships of latent variables may be of interest. We analyzed the correlation matrix of eleven environmental variables from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program for Estuaries (EMAP-E) using methods of structural equation modeling. We hypothesized and tested a conceptual model to characterize the interdependencies between four latent variables-sediment contamination, natural variability, biodiversity, and growth potential. In particular, we were interested in measuring the direct, indirect, and total effects of sediment contamination and natural variability on biodiversity and growth potential. The model fit the data well and accounted for 81% of the variability in biodiversity and 69% of the variability in growth potential. It revealed a positive total effect of natural variability on growth potential that otherwise would have been judged negative had we not considered indirect effects. That is, natural variability had a negative direct effect on growth potential of magnitude –0.3251 and a positive indirect effect mediated through biodiversity of magnitude 0.4509, yielding a net positive total effect of 0.1258. Natural variability had a positive direct effect on biodiversity of magnitude 0.5347 and a negative indirect effect mediated through growth potential of magnitude –0.1105 yielding a positive total effects of magnitude 0.4242. Sediment contamination had a negative direct effect on biodiversity of magnitude –0.1956 and a negative indirect effect on growth potential via biodiversity of magnitude –0.067. Biodiversity had a positive effect on growth potential of magnitude 0.8432, and growth potential had a positive effect on biodiversity of magnitude 0.3398. The correlation between biodiversity and growth potential was estimated at 0.7658 and that between sediment contamination and natural variability at –0.3769. 相似文献

Normal theory procedures for calculating upper confidence limits (UCL) on the risk function for continuous responses work well when the data come from a normal distribution. However, if the data come from an alternative distribution, the application of the normal theory procedures may lead serious over- or under-coverage depending upon the alternative distribution. In this paper we conduct simulation studies to investigate the sensitivity of three normal theory UCL procedures to departures from normality. Employee creativity is critical for an organization's innovativeness and survival in today's competitive business environment. As such, scholars have devoted significant attention to the predictors of employee creativity, seeking to understand how to best increase employees' creative output. However, employee creativity may not always translate into organizational innovation and performance. In fact, employee creativity may result in various outcomes for creative individuals, their coworkers, teams, and organizations. While there have been several integrative reviews on the antecedents of creativity, an in-depth review of the outcomes of creativity is still needed to gain a holistic understanding of the benefits and costs of employee creativity and identify fruitful areas for future research. Thus, we aim to provide a comprehensive multilevel examination of the theories, methods, and creativity-related constructs used to examine the outcomes of creativity. We also provide several theoretical and empirical opportunities for future research. ABSTRACTThe important role that climate leaders and leadership play at different levels of the European Union (EU) multilevel governance system is exemplified. Initially, climate leader states set the pace with ambitious policy measures that were adopted largely on an ad hoc basis. Since the mid-1980s, the EU has developed a multilevel climate governance system that has facilitated leadership and lesson-drawing at all governance levels including the local level. The EU has become a global climate policy leader by example although it had been set up as a ‘leaderless Europe’. The resulting ‘leadership without leader’ paradox cannot be sufficiently explained merely by reference to top-level EU climate policies. Local-level climate innovations and lesson-drawing have increasingly been encouraged by the EU’s multilevel climate governance system which has become more polycentric. Decision makers responsible for natural resource management often complain that science delivers fragmented information that
is not useful at the scale of implementation. We offer a way of negotiating complex problems by putting forward a requisite
simplicity. A requisite simplicity attempts to discard some detail, while retaining conceptual clarity and scientific rigor,
and helps us move to a new position where we can benefit from new knowledge. We illustrate the above using three case studies:
elephant densities and vegetation change in a national park, the use of rules of thumb to support decision making in agriculture,
and the management of salt in irrigation. We identify potential requisite simplicities that can allow us to generate new understanding,
