ABSTRACT: We review published analyses of the effects of climate change on goods and services provided by freshwater ecosystems in the United States. Climate-induced changes must be assessed in the context of massive anthropogenic changes in water quantity and quality resulting from altered patterns of land use, water withdrawal, and species invasions; these may dwarf or exacerbate climate-induced changes. Water to meet instream needs is competing with other uses of water, and that competition is likely to be increased by climate change. We review recent predictions of the impacts of climate change on aquatic ecosystems in eight regions of North America. Impacts include warmer temperatures that alter lake mixing regimes and availability of fish habitat; changed magnitude and seasonality of runoff regimes that alter nutrient loading and limit habitat availability at low flow; and loss of prairie pothole wetlands that reduces waterfowl populations. Many of the predicted changes in aquatic ecosystems are a consequence of climatic effects on terrestrial ecosystems; shifts in riparian vegetation and hydrology are particularly critical. We review models that could be used to explore potential effects of climate change on freshwater ecosystems; these include models of instream flow, bioenergetics models, nutrient spiraling models, and models relating riverine food webs to hydrologic regime. We discuss potential ecological risks, benefits, and costs of climate change and identify information needs and model improvements that are required to improve our ability to predict and identify climate change impacts and to evaluate management options. 相似文献

We focused on groundwater denitrification capacity, water table dynamics, and the presence and pattern of organically enriched deposits. We used the push-pull method (measurement of 15N-enriched denitrification gases derived from an introduced groundwater plume of 15N-enriched nitrate) to evaluate groundwater denitrification capacity on nine forested wetland riparian sites developed in alluvial or outwash parent materials in southern New England. Three replicate sites were located in each of the three watershed types, those with substantial (1) irrigated agriculture, (2) suburban development, and (3) forest. Soil morphology and water table dynamics were assessed at each site. We found significantly lower mean annual water tables at sites within watersheds with substantial irrigated agriculture or suburban development than forested watersheds. Water table dynamics were more variable at sites within suburban watersheds, especially during the summer. Groundwater denitrification capacity was significantly greater at sites within forested watersheds than in watersheds with substantial irrigated agriculture. Because of the high degree of variability observed in riparian sites within suburban watersheds, groundwater denitrification capacity was not significantly different from either forested or agricultural watersheds. The highly variable patterns of organically enriched deposits and water tables at sites within suburban watersheds suggests that depositional events are irregular, limiting the predictability of groundwater N dynamics in these riparian zones. The variability of riparian N removal in watersheds with extensive suburbia or irrigated agriculture argues for N management strategies emphasizing effective N source controls in these settings. 相似文献

自然生态承载力是当前国际可持续发展定量研究的前沿问题之一。提出按照各类土地的实际生产能力和实际生态服务功能计算各类土地的生态承载力,将消纳污染和水资源的供给功能纳入区域自然生态承载力计算模型,并简称该方法为"实际供给法"。依据海南省统计年鉴资料和生态调查资料,应用"实际供给法"计算和分析了海南省1952~2004年自然生态承载力的动态变化特征:①海南省自然生态承载力长期持续增长,由1952年的7.0804hm2/人上升到2004年的8.5984hm2/人,增加了1.5180hm2/人,年均增长0.4%;②可再生资源生态承载力占总生态承载力的绝大部分,1952年和2004年分别占98.6%和92.3%,而不可再生资源生态承载力仅分别占1.4%和7.7%;③水资源生态承载力呈跳跃式下降,从1952年的6.8165hm2/人下降到2004年的0.4473hm2/人;耕地、海域和淡水水域的承载力呈上升趋势,分别从1952年的0.1277、0.0057和0.0001hm2/人上升到2004年的2.6066、3.1192和1.1468hm2/人,其它土地类型生态承载力变化不明显;④在生态承载力组成中,水资源比例由大到小变化显著,从96.3%下降到5.2%,耕地、海域的比例由小到大变化显著,分别从1.8%、0.1%上升到30.3%、36.3%,其它土地都由小到大,但所占比例较小;海域、耕地和水资源是海南生态承载力的主要贡献因素,三者之和占到总量的71.8%~98.2%。并分析了海南省自然生态承载力动态变化的原因。 相似文献

POST‐HARVEST RIPARIAN BUFFER RESPONSE: IMPLICATIONS FOR WOOD RECRUITMENT MODELING AND BUFFER DESIGN1

Despite the importance of riparian buffers in providing aquatic functions to forested streams, few studies have sought to capture key differences in ecological and geomorphic processes between buffered sites and forested conditions. This study examines post‐harvest buffer conditions from 20 randomly selected harvest sites within a managed tree farm in the Cascade Mountains of western Washington. Post‐harvest wind derived treefall rates in buffers up to three years post‐harvest averaged 268 trees/km/year, 26 times greater than competition‐induced mortality rate estimates. Treefall rates and stem breakage were strongly tied to tree species and relatively unaffected by stream direction. Observed treefall direction is strongly biased toward the channel, irrespective of channel or buffer orientation. Fall direction bias can deliver significantly more wood recruitment relative to randomly directed treefall, suggesting that models that utilize the random fall assumption will significantly underpredict recruitment. A simple estimate of post‐harvest wood recruitment from buffers can be obtained from species specific treefall and breakage rates, combined with bias corrected recruitment probability as a function of source distance from the channel. Post‐harvest wind effects may reduce the standing density of trees enough to significantly reduce or eliminate competition mortality and thus indirectly alter bank erosion rates, resulting in substantially different wood recruitment dynamics from buffers as compared to unmanaged forests. 相似文献

为了建立物理意义明确、科学合理、计算简单和普适通用的环境质量评价模型,借鉴自然界普遍存在的万有引力现象和物理学中的规范对称性(不变性)原理,提出环境样本之间也存在类似万有引力的聚类相互作用引力,并在适当设定指标参照值和指标值的规范变换式及"参照级"样本基础上,定义了环境样本的"规范质量"和"规范坐标"的概念,进而分别建立了基于指标规范值的水环境质量和空气环境质量的引力普适指数公式.通过若干实例对公式的实用性进行了效果检验,结果表明,基于指标规范值的环境质量的引力普适指数公式具有形式简洁、规范统一、计算简便和普适通用的特点. 相似文献

构筑根孔湿地中金属元素的来源、分布及其累积效应 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
石臼漾湿地是我国最大的饮用水源处理湿地,成为微污染水源水质改善的典范案例,已运行超过4年,主要运用人工湿地生态根孔技术、多级塘/植物床-沟壕系统协同净化技术来净化微污染水源.为了探明多级塘/植物床-沟壕系统对源水中常规金属K、Na、Ca、Mg、Al、Fe与重金属Cd、Cr、Cu、Ni、Zn、Pb的累积效应,研究了嘉兴石臼漾湿地岸边带与植物床-沟壕系统中沉积物/土壤的金属分布与累积量.结果表明,沉积物中的金属(Mg除外)均发生了富集和累积(富集系数EF∈(1.5,10.5)1.5).湿地内重金属潜在生态风险指数(RI∈(24.7,128.9)150)基本处于轻微风险水平,其最高值出现在湿地前端约1/8处的预处理塘(RI=174.94150).总体而言,重金属风险指数随水力流程而逐步降低.在湿地前端的预处理河道、预处理塘内,重金属沉积通量(23.97~157.72 mg·m-2·d-1)较高,而植物床-沟壕系统的沉积通量((38.80±16.17)mg·m-2·d-1)相对较低.占湿地面积11.35%的预处理河道、预处理塘中沉积的重金属高达9941.65 kg,占全湿地沉积量的37.90%,是重金属沉积的关键区域.而占湿地面积57.23%的植物床-沟壕系统中截留的重金属高达10601.89 kg,占全湿地沉积量的40.41%,是重金属去除的重点区域.湿地对重金属的主要持留机制是沉积作用,在湿地中单位平均沉积通量高达32.19 mg·m-2·d-1.据估算石臼漾湿地可沉积重金属6558.40 kg·a-1,植物吸收重金属约13.16 kg·a-1.本研究证明,多级塘/植物床-沟壕系统协同净化机制能够有效持留微污染水源中的金属特别是重金属,从而有效降低石臼漾湿地净化后源水的潜在生态风险. 相似文献
