Food is a basic human need and therefore a basic human right. While food output has increased to a level where there is enough food produced to feed the world, still millions starve. Using the concept of capitalist world economy as a framework, this paper provides a structural analysis of the food production and distribution system within monopoly capitalism and its implications for countries of the underdeveloped world. Focusing on the impact of a dominant world food supply system on indigenous systems (particularly through the rise of science, technology, and monopoly capital), considerations relating to environmental use and food production and distribution are raised. The land evaluation and site assessment (LESA) method has been used extensively in the United States to assess agricultural
land suitability for different localities. Despite widespread use, LESA models rarely have been evaluated in a systematic,
comprehensive manner. This article discusses development of a LESA system for Hawaii, the first statewide application of the
LESA methodology. The empirical model was implemented with a computerized geographic information system (GIS). The system's
efficiency, ability to discriminate among land parcels, and robustness to subjective model parameter values are evaluated
with statistical analyses and map overlays of GIS data. Results show great potential to simplify the original model specification,
primarily through deletion of marginal site assessment factors. System output was generally insensitive to the numeric values
selected for model parameters, with exception of the ratio used to combine the land evaluation (LE) and site assessment (SA)
component scores. Relative supplies of the differing land attributes measured by the two components must be considered in
determining an appropriate LE:SA ratio for a given area. 相似文献

The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) constructed a wetland south of Lake Okeechobee to begin the process of
removing nutrients (especially phosphorus) from agricultural stormwater runoff entering the Everglades. The project, called
the Everglades Nutrient Removal (ENR) project, is a prototype for larger, similarly constructed wetlands that the SFWMD will
build as part of the Everglades restoration program. This innovative project is believed to be one of the largest agricultural
stormwater cleanup projects in the United States, if not in the world. This publication describes the ENR project's design,

/ Implementing the concept of sustainability through integrated approaches to natural resource management poses enormous challenges for both the rural communities and government agencies concerned. This paper reviews the underlying rhetoric of sustainable agricultural systems and the integrated resource management paradigm and identifies some of the challenges being experienced in translating this rhetoric into practice. A relatively recently implemented community-based integrated catchment management (ICM) process in a rural community in northeast Australia is examined in terms of some of the lessons learned that may be relevant to other similar integrated resource management (IRM) processes. It reveals a pragmatic, opportunistic, and evolving implementation process based on adaptive learning rather than a more traditional "rational" planning approach. Some essential characteristics of a community-based IRM process are identified, including fostering communication; providing a structure that fosters cooperation and facilities coordination among community, industry, and government agencies; the integration of IRM principles into local government planning schemes; and an emergent strategic approach to IRM program implementation. We conclude by identifying some essential characteristics of an IRM process that can assist a community to adapt to, and manage change for, sustainable resource use. 相似文献

Run-off containing increased concentrations of sediment, nutrients, and pesticides from land-based anthropogenic activities
is a significant influence on water quality and the ecologic conditions of nearshore areas of the Great Barrier Reef World
Heritage Area, Australia. The potential and actual impacts of increased pollutant concentrations range from bioaccumulation
of contaminants and decreased photosynthetic capacity to major shifts in community structure and health of mangrove, coral
reef, and seagrass ecosystems. A detailed conceptual model underpins and illustrates the links between the main anthropogenic
pressures or threats (dry-land cattle grazing and intensive sugar cane cropping) and the production of key contaminants or
stressors of Great Barrier Reef water quality. The conceptual model also includes longer-term threats to Great Barrier Reef
water quality and ecosystem health, such as global climate change, that will potentially confound direct model interrelationships.
The model recognises that system-specific attributes, such as monsoonal wind direction, rainfall intensity, and flood plume
residence times, will act as system filters to modify the effects of any water-quality system stressor. The model also summarises
key ecosystem responses in ecosystem health that can be monitored through indicators at catchment, riverine, and marine scales.
Selected indicators include riverine and marine water quality, inshore coral reef and seagrass status, and biota pollutant
burdens. These indicators have been adopted as components of a long-term monitoring program to enable assessment of the effectiveness
of change in catchment-management practices in improving Great Barrier Reef (and adjacent catchment) water quality under the

Land application of contaminated waste products has been defended as beneficial use by some scientists and regulators, based on the premise that the behavior of any toxins accumulated in soils from this practice is reasonably well understood and will not have detrimental agronomic or environmental impacts into the foreseeable future. In this review, I use the case of toxic metals in sewage sludges applied to agricultural land to illustrate that metal behavior in soils and plant uptake is difficult to generalize because it is strongly dependent on the nature of the metal, sludge, soil properties and crop. Nevertheless, permitted agricultural loadings of toxic metals from sewage sludges are typically regulated using the sole criterion of total metal loading or concentrations in soils. Several critical generalizing assumptions about the behavior of sludge-borne metals in soil-crop systems, built into the US EPA risk assessment for metals, have tended to underestimate risks and are shown not to be well justified by published research. It is argued that, in the absence of a basic understanding of metal behavior in each specific situation, a more precautionary approach to toxic metal additions to soils is warranted. 相似文献

/ Land use/land cover classifications for 1973 and 1991, derived from the interpretation of satellite imagery, are quantified on the basis of biophysical land units in a study area in southeastern Australia. Nutrient export potentials are estimated for each land unit based on their composition of land use/land cover classes. Spatial and temporal comparisons are made of the land units based on the calculated pollution hazard indicators to provide an insight into changes in the state of the environment and the regional significance of land use changes. For example, one ecosystem, unique to the study, showed a large increase in pollution hazard over the study period as a manifestation of an 11-fold rise in cleared area and an expansion of cropping activities. Three mathematical models, the runoff curve number equation, the universal soil loss equation, and the mass response functions,
were evaluated for predicting nonpoint source nutrient loading from agricultural watersheds of the Mediterranean region. These
methodologies were applied to a catchment, the gulf of Gera Basin, that is a typical terrestrial ecosystem of the islands
of the Aegean archipelago. The calibration of the model parameters was based on data from experimental plots from which edge-of-field
losses of sediment, water runoff, and nutrients were measured. Special emphasis was given to the transport of dissolved and
solid-phase nutrients from their sources in the farmers' fields to the outlet of the watershed in order to estimate respective
attenuation rates. It was found that nonpoint nutrient loading due to surface losses was high during winter, the contribution
being between 50% and 80% of the total annual nutrient losses from the terrestrial ecosystem. The good fit between simulated
and experimental data supports the view that these modeling procedures should be considered as reliable and effective methodological
tools in Mediterranean areas for evaluating potential control measures, such as management practices for soil and water conservation
and changes in land uses, aimed at diminishing soil loss and nutrient delivery to surface waters. Furthermore, the modifications
of the general mathematical formulations and the experimental values of the model parameters provided by the study can be
used in further application of these methodologies in watersheds with similar characteristics. 相似文献
