This paper presents results of the assessment of the design parameters leading to the definition of the crest level of a coastal
dike along the German North Sea. Procedures to estimate the design water level have been proposed, distinguishing between
comparative and single value procedures. The transformation of the wave characteristics from deep water towards the shallow
foreshore was achieved through the application of a spectral wave model. To improve the wave parameter estimations, the existing
model was nested to a grid with a higher resolution closer to the coast. The estimation of the wave run-up followed the Dutch
procedure with some adjustments to the local wave characteristics and dike geometry. The computed maximum crest level of 8.4 m
is below the crest height of the existing dike, which is 8.8 m. However a proposal for a more economical design should be
carefully evaluated, paying attention to the uncertainties encountered in this research. The general recommendation is to
enhance the reliability of the hindcasted wave parameters through calibration and validation of the wave model and to include
in the design process an investigation of the effect of the medium term morphological developments. 相似文献

This study may be the first investigation to be performed into the potential benefits of recycling industrial waste in controlling
contaminants in leachate. Batch reactors were used to evaluate the efficacy of waste steel scrap and converter slag to treat
mixed contaminants using mimic leachate solution. The waste steel scrap was prepared through pre-treatment by an acid-washed
step, which retained both zero-valent iron site and iron oxide site. Extensive trichloroethene (TCE) removal (95%) occurred
by acid-washed steel scrap within 48 h. In addition, dehalogenation (Cl− production) was observed to be above 7.5% of the added TCE on a molar basis for 48 h. The waste steel scrap also removed
tetrachloroethylene (PCE) through the dehalogenation process although to a lesser extent than TCE. Heavy metals (Cr, Mn, Cu,
Zn, As, Cd, and Pb) were extensively removed by both acid-washed steel scrap and converter slag through the adsorption process.
Among salt ions (NH4+, NO3−, and PO43−), PO43− was removed by both waste steel scrap (100% within 8 h) and converter slag (100% within 20 min), whereas NO3- and NH4+ were removed by waste steel scrap (100% within 7 days) and converter slag (up to 50% within 4 days) respectively. This work
suggests that permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) with waste steel scrap and converter slag might be an effective approach

Rail has an important role to play in the development toward a sustainable transportation system. In this perspective, the European Brite Euram Project RAVEL (Rail Vehicle Eco-Efficient Design) has developed a rail sectorwide Design for Environment system to be used and standardized throughout the full supply chain. At the core of the system, quantitative environmental performance indicators for rail vehicles and components are used to incorporate environmental performance target levels in the product requirements and to measure and communicate achieved environmental performance. The concept of eco-efficiency is used to integrate both environmental and economical considerations. The methodology further builds on a standardized material list, standardized data formats, and proactive design guidance. To date, first steps are already taken to integrate the RAVEL project results into sector initiatives toward industrywide acceptance and standardization.Published online
