Reliable sources of high-quality water for domestic use are much needed in arid regions. Valley alluvium, coarse sand and gravel deposited by streams and rivers, provides an ideal storage medium for water in many regions of the world. However, river sediments will not accumulate in a valley without a natural or artificial barrier to slow the water. Sediments will deposit upstream of a barrier dam and form an alluvial deposit of relatively well-sorted material. The alluvium then acts as both an underground water-supply reservoir and a water filter, yielding a constant flow of high-quality water. Trap dams that store water in alluvial sediments and slowly release the filtered water represent an appropriate and inexpensive technology for combating desertification and mitigating the effects of drought at the community level. Small trap dams may be built as a community project using local materials and local labor.  相似文献

采用介质阻挡放电等离子体技术,以镍,铁,钼,不锈钢4种材料作为电极,分别在有平行磁场和无平行磁场的条件下,考察了不同电极材料对亚甲基蓝降解率和能量利用率的影响.实验中发现电极材料的不同会影响亚甲基蓝的降解效果,其中镍电极在处理8min后亚甲基蓝降解率可达99%,降解效果最好,电极材料还会影响平行磁场对亚甲基蓝降解的促进效果,铁和镍电极的能量利用率相比无磁场时提高了约20%,而钼和不锈钢只有5%~10%.通过研究介质阻挡放电等离子体的产生机理和二次电子发射原理,发现这些差异是由电极材料的二次电子发射系数和磁导率的不同导致的,4种材料中铁的二次电子发射系数最大,电子雪崩过程中产生的高能电子更多,因此降解效果最好,铁和镍的磁导率最大,放电空间内的磁感应强度更高,因此平行磁场对亚甲基蓝降解率和能量利用率的提升更大.  相似文献

Objective: This article aims to evaluate the safety performance of cable median barriers on freeways in Florida.

Method: The safety performance evaluation was based on the percentages of barrier and median crossovers by vehicle type, crash severity, and cable median barrier type (Trinity Cable Safety System [CASS] and Gibraltar system). Twenty-three locations with cable median barriers totaling about 101 miles were identified. Police reports of 6,524 crashes from years 2005–2010 at these locations were reviewed to verify and obtain detailed crash information. A total of 549 crashes were determined to be barrier related (i.e., crashes involving vehicles hitting the cable median barrier) and were reviewed in further detail to identify crossover crashes and the manner in which the vehicles crossed the barriers; that is, by either overriding, underriding, or penetrating the barriers.

Results: Overall, 2.6% of vehicles that hit the cable median barrier crossed the median and traversed into the opposite travel lane. Overall, 98.1% of cars and 95.5% of light trucks that hit the barrier were prevented from crossing the median. In other words, 1.9% of cars and 4.5% of light trucks that hit the barrier had crossed the median and encroached on the opposite travel lanes. There is no significant difference in the performance of cable median barrier for cars versus light trucks in terms of crossover crashes. In terms of severity, overrides were more severe compared to underrides and penetrations. The statistics showed that the CASS and Gibraltar systems performed similarly in terms of crossover crashes. However, the Gibraltar system experienced a higher proportion of penetrations compared to the CASS system. The CASS system resulted in a slightly higher percentage of moderate and minor injury crashes compared to the Gibraltar system.

Conclusions: Cable median barriers are successful in preventing median crossover crashes; 97.4% of the cable median barrier crashes were prevented from crossing over the median. Of all of the vehicles that hit the barrier, 83.6% were either redirected or contained by the cable barrier system. Barrier crossover crashes were found to be more severe compared to barrier noncrossover crashes. In addition, overrides were found to be more severe compared to underrides and penetrations.  相似文献

Spillover effects are an expansion of conservation benefits beyond protected areas through dispersal of species that reside within. They have been well documented in marine but not terrestrial systems. To understand the effects on wildlife created by conservation fences, we explored the internal and external gradients of activity in mammal, reptile, and bird species at a conservation reserve in arid Australia that is fenced to exclude invasive rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), cats (Felis catus), and foxes (Vulpes vulpes). Two methods were used: counts of animal tracks along transects on sand dunes and captures at pitfall-trapping sites. In both cases, sites were spaced at different distances from the reserve fenceline inside and outside the reserve. We recorded a range of spillover, source-sink, step, and barrier effects that combined to create a zone within and around the reserve with fence-induced species-specific wildlife gradients. Two endemic rodents but none of the 4 mammal species reintroduced to the reserve showed positive spillover effects. Barrier effects, where activity was highest close to the fence, were recorded for the feral cat and native bettong (Bettongia lesueur), species that could not breach the fence. In comparison, some reptiles and native mammal species that could permeate the fence displayed source-sink effects; that is, their activity levels were reduced close to the fence likely due to constant emigration to the side with lower density. Activity of some reptiles was lowest at sites inside the reserve and gradually increased at outside sites with distance from the fence, a gradient likely related to trophic cascades triggered by predator exclusion. Our result shows that fenced reserves can create overlapping layers of species-specific gradients related to each species’ ability to permeate the fence and its varying susceptibility to threats. Managers should be aware that these gradients may extend for several kilometers either side of the fence and that not all contained species will increase in abundance. Creating wider conservation benefits may require increased fence permeability and threat reduction outside the fence.  相似文献

The revegetation of mined areas poses a great challenge to the iron ore mining industry. The initial recovery process in degraded areas might rely on the use of Fe-resistant grasses. Tropical grasses, such as Paspalum densum and Echinochloa crus-galli, show different resistance strategies to iron toxicity; however, these mechanisms are poorly understood. The Fe-resistance mechanisms and direct iron toxicity as a function of root apex removal were investigated. To achieve this purpose, both grass species were grown for up to 480?hr in a nutrient solution containing 0.019 or 7?mmol/L Fe-EDTA after the root apices had been removed or maintained. Cultivation in the presence of excess iron-induced leaf bronzing and the formation of iron plaque on the root surfaces of both grass species, but was more significant on those plants whose root apex had been removed. Iron accumulation was higher in the roots, but reached phytotoxic levels in the aerial parts as well. It did not hinder the biosynthesis of chloroplastidic pigments. No significant changes in gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence occurred in either grass when their roots were kept intact; the contrary was true for plants with excised root apices. In both studied grasses, the root apoplastic barriers had an important function in the restriction of iron translocation from the root to the aerial plant parts, especially in E. crus-galli. Root apex removal negatively influenced the iron toxicity resistance mechanisms (tolerance in P. densum and avoidance in E. crus-galli).  相似文献

DBD协同CuO/MnO2耦合生物滴滤塔降解氯苯的工艺性能分析   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
以氯苯为目标污染物,选择CuO/MnO_2作为耦合系统中的催化剂,采用介质阻挡放电(Dielectric Barrier Discharge,DBD)技术协同催化作为生物系统的预处理技术,开展废气净化的研究.实验结果发现,耦合生物滴滤塔(Biotrickling Filter,BTF)和单一生物滴滤塔系统分别在13 d和15 d内完成挂膜,氯苯的去除率分别达到100%和97%.稳定运行期,停留时间(EBRT)为90 s时,单一BTF在处理低进气浓度氯苯废气时,去除效果与耦合系统相当;进气浓度较大时,耦合系统的处理效果要明显优于单一BTF.EBRT缩短至45 s时,无论氯苯进气浓度高或低,耦合系统的处理效果均优于单一BTF.单一BTF的最大去除负荷(Eliminatory Capacity,ECmax)为41 g·m~(-3)·h~(-1),在同样实验条件下,耦合系统未达到最大去除负荷,而耦合系统和单一BTF对氯苯的矿化率分别为95%和86%.DBD协同催化能有效改善BTF对于高进气负荷氯苯废气的处理,预处理工艺能强化BTF对氯苯废气的彻底净化.通过对各功能单元对氯苯去除的贡献分析,发现DBD协同CuO/MnO_2工艺主要负责转化氯苯,BTF下段填料主要负责预处理工艺产生的中间产物的矿化,BTF上段填料主要负责剩余氯苯的去除及其矿化.  相似文献

根据避难硐室气幕阻隔系统的防护功能,确定该系统由供气装置、散气装置和启闭装置组成;根据射流理论和对比试验确定气幕系统最佳孔径为1.2mm,最佳孔间距为40mm;通过SPSS方法建立模型,确定气幕系统以衰减距离x为变量的气体衰减函数;根据孔径、孔距及幕帘尺寸,计算确定气幕防护系统的最小供风量为1.61×10 -3m3/s;通过模拟密闭空间阻隔性能测试,确定气幕系统的最大阻隔效率可达90%以上,同时阻隔效率随着二氧化碳初始浓度的增加而降低.  相似文献

为优化低温等离子体反应器设计、提高NO分解率,在低放电电压下通过改变介质阻挡放电参数(放电电压、介质材料、放电间隙等)考察其对分解NO的影响.研究结果表明:在低电压范围条件下(≤6.5 kV),放电电压对提高NO分解率的效果是非线性的,其影响随电压的升高而减弱;选择介电常数较大的介质材料更易获得较高的分解率;当反应器其它特征参数确定后,放电间隙并非越小越好,而是存在一个最佳值;实际应用中,应选用二次电子发射系数较大的电极材料;NTP反应器中加入填充材料不仅具有吸附和存储性能,还具有介质阻挡放电的功能,选择适合的填充材料能更大程度地提高能量利用率,提高NO分解率.  相似文献
