The Arctic is nutrient limited, particularly by nitrogen, and is impacted by anthropogenic global warming which occurs approximately twice as fast compared to the global average. Arctic warming intensifies thawing of permafrost-affected soils releasing their large organic nitrogen reservoir. This organic nitrogen reaches hydrological systems, is remineralized to reactive inorganic nitrogen, and is transported to the Arctic Ocean via large rivers. We estimate the load of nitrogen supplied from terrestrial sources into the Arctic Ocean by sampling in the Lena River and its Delta. We took water samples along one of the major deltaic channels in winter and summer in 2019 and sampling station in the central delta over a one-year cycle. Additionally, we investigate the potential release of reactive nitrogen, including nitrous oxide from soils in the Delta. We found that the Lena transported nitrogen as dissolved organic nitrogen to the coastal Arctic Ocean and that eroded soils are sources of reactive inorganic nitrogen such as ammonium and nitrate. The Lena and the Deltaic region apparently are considerable sources of nitrogen to nearshore coastal zone. Human activities are changing the Arctic environment at an unprecedented rate resulting in rapid warming, freshening, sea ice retreat and ocean acidification of the Arctic Ocean. Trace gases such as nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) play important roles in both the atmospheric reactivity and radiative budget of the Arctic and thus have a high potential to influence the region’s climate. However, little is known about how these rapid physical and chemical changes will impact the emissions of major climate-relevant trace gases from the Arctic Ocean. The combined consequences of these stressors present a complex combination of environmental changes which might impact on trace gas production and their subsequent release to the Arctic atmosphere. In the Arctic environment, the fluid temperature in the pipeline can drop below the freezing point of water, which causes wax and ice to form on the pipeline surface. Solid formation on the pipeline surface can lead to flow assurance and process safety issues, such as blockage of the pipeline, pipeline component failure, and release of hazardous liquid. Remediating the plugging requires a shutdown of pipeline operation, which incurs tremendous cost and delays the entire production system. In order to prevent blockage, the pigging operation can be used to remove the deposits on the pipeline surface on a regular interval. Ice and wax depositions in the pipeline are a slow process. However, if the deposition grows too thick, pipeline blockage can still occur after pigging operation. So, ice and wax deposition rates are required to be estimated accurately. This paper investigates ice and wax deposition rates in a 90,000 m pipeline. A fundamental model for both ice and wax deposition is proposed using the first principles of heat and mass transfer. 相似文献

In males of socially monogamous birds, plasma testosterone (T) typically declines to low levels during the parental phase.
Studies on multiple-brooded species indicate that high T may be incompatible with high-quality paternal care. The length of
the breeding season may affect the costs and benefits of high T and its effect on paternal care. We studied the effect of
experimentally elevated T on paternal care in a single-brooded species with a short breeding season, the Lapland longspur
(Calcarius lapponicus). We monitored T levels and parental behavior in 16 males with subcutaneous T implants, 14 males with empty implants, and
14 unimplanted males. We videotaped nests when nestlings were 2–3 days old and again at 4–5 days. T males with 2- to 3-day-old
young visited nests and fed young less often than control males, and the mates of the T males compensated with elevated visits
and feedings. However, when nestlings were 4–5 days old, T males visited their nests at normal rates – though feeding movements
remained below normal – and T females visited and fed at normal rates. Nestling mass and nest success were similar in both
groups. Overall, high T suppresses paternal care in Lapland longspur males. The partial improvement of paternal care when
nestlings are older, despite high T, may be related to the short 6-week breeding season of this arctic species, and the consequently
reduced benefits of sexual behavior late in the breeding season.

Neutral polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) were measured in high-volume air samples collected on board the research vessel Snow Dragon during the 4th Chinese National Arctic Expedition from the Japan Sea to the Arctic Ocean in 2010. Four volatile and semi-volatile PFASs (fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs), fluorotelomer acids (FTAs), perfluoroalkyl sulfonamides (FASAs), and sulfonamidoethanols (FASEs)) were analyzed respectively in the gas and particle phases. FTOHs were the dominant PFASs in the gas phase (61-358 pg m−3), followed by FTAs (5.2-47.9 pg m−3), FASEs (1.9-15.0 pg m−3), and FASAs (0.5-2.1 pg m−3). In the particle phase, the dominant PFAS class was FTOHs (1.0-9.9 pg m−3). The particle-associated fraction followed the general trend of FASEs > FASAs > FTOHs. Compared with other atmospheric PFAS measurements, the ranges of concentrations of ∑FTOH in this study were similar to those reported from Toronto, north America (urban), the northeast Atlantic Ocean, and northern Germany. Significant correlations between FASEs in the gas phase and ambient air temperature indicate that cold surfaces such as sea-ice, snowpack, and surface seawater influence atmospheric FASEs. 相似文献

The Arctic marine ecosystem contains multiple elements that present alternative states. The most obvious of which is an Arctic Ocean largely covered by an ice sheet in summer versus one largely devoid of such cover. Ecosystems under pressure typically shift between such alternative states in an abrupt, rather than smooth manner, with the level of forcing required for shifting this status termed threshold or tipping point. Loss of Arctic ice due to anthropogenic climate change is accelerating, with the extent of Arctic sea ice displaying increased variance at present, a leading indicator of the proximity of a possible tipping point. Reduced ice extent is expected, in turn, to trigger a number of additional tipping elements, physical, chemical, and biological, in motion, with potentially large impacts on the Arctic marine ecosystem. 相似文献

We examined relationships between hepatic concentrations of halogenated organic contaminants and ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity and retinoid (vitamin A) concentrations in livers, as well as retinol and thyroid hormone (TT3, TT4) levels in blood plasma, of northern fulmars at two breeding colonies in the Canadian High Arctic. Biomarker levels or responses did not differ significantly between males and females at either colony, nor was there any significant difference between colonies. No significant relationships were found between thyroid hormone or hepatic retinoid concentrations and any of the dioxin-like compounds or their Toxic Equivalents (TEQs) although significant positive correlations were found with plasma retinol (p < 0.03). EROD activity was significantly correlated with hepatic dioxin-like compounds and their TEQs (p < 0.001) as well as total PCBs (p < 0.01), which suggests that EROD induction occurs in northern fulmars at environmentally-relevant concentrations. 相似文献

We report on a revisit in 2009 to sites where vegetation was recorded in 1967 and 1970 on Disko Island, West Greenland. Re-sampling
of the same clones of the grass Phleum alpinum after 39 years showed complete stability in biometrics but dramatic earlier onset of various phenological stages that were
not related to changes in population density. In a fell-field community, there was a net species loss, but in a herb-slope
community, species losses balanced those that were gained. The type of species establishing and increasing in frequency and/or
cover abundance at the fell-field site, particularly prostrate dwarf shrubs, indicates a possible start of a shift towards
a heath, rather than a fell-field community. At the herb-slope site, those species that established or increased markedly
in frequency and/or cover abundance indicate a change to drier conditions. This is confirmed both by the decrease in abundance
of Alchemilla glomerulans and Epilobium hornemanii, and the drying of a nearby pond. The causes of these changes are unknown, although mean annual temperature has risen since

Canopy-forming shrubs are reported to be increasing at sites around the circumpolar Arctic. Our results indicate expansion
in canopy cover and height of willows on Herschel Island located at 70° north on the western Arctic coast of the Yukon Territory.
We examined historic photographs, repeated vegetation surveys, and conducted monitoring of long-term plots and found evidence
of increases of each of the dominant canopy-forming willow species (Salix richardsonii, Salix glauca and Salix pulchra), during the twentieth century. A simple model of patch initiation indicates that the majority of willow patches for each
of these species became established between 1910 and 1960, with stem ages and maximum growth rates indicating that some patches
could have established as late as the 1980s. Collectively, these results suggest that willow species are increasing in canopy
cover and height on Herschel Island. We did not find evidence that expansion of willow patches is currently limited by herbivory,

For more than a decade, anthropogenic sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) deposition has been identified as a key pollutant in the
Arctic. In this study new critical loads of acidity (S and N) were estimated for terrestrial ecosystems north of 60° latitude
by applying the Simple Mass Balance (SMB) model using two critical chemical criteria (Al/Bc = 1 and ANCle = 0). Critical loads were exceeded in large areas of northern Europe and the Norilsk region in western Siberia during the
1990s, with the more stringent criterion (ANCle = 0) showing the larger area of exceedance. However, modeled deposition estimates indicate that mean concentrations of sulfur
oxides and total S deposition within the Arctic almost halved between 1990 and 2000. The modeled exceeded area is much reduced
when currently agreed emission reductions are applied, and almost disappears under the implementation of maximum technically
feasible reductions by 2020. In northern North America there was no exceedance under any of the deposition scenarios applied.
Modeled N deposition was less than 5 kg ha−1 y−1 almost across the entire study area for all scenarios; and therefore empirical critical loads for the eutrophying impact
of nitrogen are unlikely to be exceeded. The reduction in critical load exceedances is supported by observed improvements
in surface water quality, whereas the observed extensive damage of terrestrial vegetation around the mining and smelter complexes
in the area is mainly caused by direct impacts of air pollution and metals. 相似文献
