Commercial forestry plantations as a postmining land use in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia are restricted
by both the poor nutrient availability of mining substrates and low regional rainfall. An experiment was conducted to investigate
whether municipal waste products and saline groundwater from coal mining operations could improve early tree growth without
impacting on the environment through salt accumulation and/or nutrient enrichment and changes in groundwater quality. Potential
impacts were investigated by quantifying the nutrient cycling dynamics within the plantation using an input–output mass balance
approach for exchangeable calcium (Ca2+), exchangeable magnesium (Mg2+), exchangeable potassium (K+), exchangeable sodium (Na+), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P). Measured inputs to and outputs from the available nutrient pool in the 0–30 cm of the
overburden subsystem were used to estimate the net effect of unmeasured inputs and outputs (termed “residuals”). Residual
values in the mass balance of the irrigated treatments demonstrated large leaching losses of exchangeable Ca, Mg, K, and Na.
Between 96% and 103% of Na applied in saline mine-water irrigation was leached below the 0–30-cm soil profile zone. The fate
of these salts beyond 30 cm is unknown, but results suggest that irrigation with saline mine water had minimal impact on the
substrate to 30 cm over the first 2 years since plantation establishment. Accumulations of N and P were detected for the substrate
amendments, suggesting that organic amendments (particularly compost) retained the applied nutrients with very little associated

The external phosphorus (P) loading has been halved, but the P content in the water column and the area of anoxic bottoms in Baltic proper has increased during the last 30 years. This can be explained by a temporary internal source of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) that is turned on when the water above the bottom sediment becomes anoxic. A load-response model, explaining the evolution from 1980 to 2005, suggests that the average specific DIP flux from anoxic bottoms in the Baltic proper is about 2.3 g P m−2 year−1. This is commensurable with fluxes estimated in situ from anoxic bottoms in the open Baltic proper and from hydrographic data in the deep part of Bornholm Basin. Oxygenation of anoxic bottoms, natural or manmade, may quickly turn off the internal P source from anoxic bottoms. This new P-paradigm should have far-reaching implications for abatement of eutrophication in the Baltic proper.

Phosphorus (P) loading from non-point or point sources increases the eutrophication risk of natural waters. The functioning of constructed wetlands (CWs) used as natural water treatment systems can be improved by means of additional materials adsorbing soluble P. In this study, light expanded clay aggregates (LECA) and LECA coated with aluminum (Al) oxide (Al-LECA) or iron (Fe) oxide (Fe-LECA) were tested for their efficiency as P sorbents in the pH range 3–8. The oxide coatings duplicated the actual sorption capacity calculated from the sorption isotherms at the P concentration in the equilibrium solution of 20 μg L−1, assumed to be the allowable P level in purified water. In the oxide-coated LECAs the sorption was fast and followed both the first- and second-order Lagergren kinetic models, suggesting that the formation of a binuclear surface complex was feasible. In LECA, sorption was markedly slower and followed the first-order kinetic model, indicating that retention occurred through a monodentate attachment. These findings were in harmony with the degree of P saturation (DPS) of the sorbent surfaces at the highest P addition level (200 μg L−1), DPS being decisively higher for LECA than for the oxide-coated sorbents. Accordingly, at higher pH values the competition by hydroxyl ions diminished the sorption in LECA relatively more than that in the coated sorbents. In agreement with the acidity of Al3+ being 100 times lower than that of Fe3+, at elevated pH the sorption by Al-LECA proved to be less reversible than that by Fe-LECA. The results provide evidence that in CWs Al-coated sorbents are superior to Fe-coated ones that are also redox-sensitive and may lose their sorption properties in anoxic conditions. 相似文献

于2012年12月—2013年11月对滆湖水体进行了调查,分析了水体氮、磷及大型底栖动物的时空分布,初步探讨大型底栖动物群落结构与氮、磷环境因子的关系。结果表明,滆湖水体的ρ(TN)在冬春季较高,ρ(TP)四季的差异不大,在空间分布上,北部湖区的ρ(TN)、ρ(TP)均高于南部湖区;大型底栖动物出现频率最高的为霍甫水丝蚓和中国长足摇蚊,其丰度在时间上均表现为秋季夏季冬季春季,在空间上的规律性不明显;CCA分析表明滆湖大型底栖动物群落结构随季节变化规律显著,且氮含量是滆湖底栖动物群落结构的重要影响因子;对优势种的丰度与氮磷的相关性分析结果显示,滆湖底栖动物优势种与TN和NO_3~--N有显著的负相关关系。 相似文献

Abstract Composts improve organic carbon content and nutrients of calcareous soils but the accumulation and distribution of phosphorus and heavy metals among various fractions in soil may vary under the south Florida conditions. The accumulation of P, Cd, Ni, and Pb with depth and the distribution of water soluble, exchangeable, carbonate, Fe–Mn oxides, organic and residual forms of each element were investigated in soils amended with municipal solid waste (MSW) compost, co-compost and biosolids compost and inorganic fertilizer (as control). Total concentrations of P, Cd, Ni, and Pb were higher in the 0–22 cm soil layers and decreased considerably in the rock layers. These elements were in the decreasing order of P ? Pb > Ni > Cd. Amounts of water soluble and exchangeable forms of P, Cd, Ni and Pb were negligible at 0–22 cm soil depths except for Cd in the 10–22 cm depth. Amending calcareous soil with either organic or inorganic amendments rendered phosphorus, nickle and lead in the residual form followed by Fe–Mn oxides form in the 0–10 and 10–22 cm soil layers. Cadmium was predominantly in the Fe–Mn oxides fraction followed by the residual and carbonate forms in both soil layers. A significant positive correlation was found between various organic carbon fractions and organic forms of P, Cd and Pb in the surface soil layer. Soil amended with MSW compost had higher concentration of Cd in the organic fraction whereas, co-compost and MSW compost amended soil had higher concentrations of organic Ni fraction in the 0–10 cm soil layer. 相似文献
