After Hurricane Katrina passed through the US Gulf Coast in August 2005, floodwaters covering New Orleans were pumped into Lake Pontchartrain as part of the rehabilitation process in order to make the city habitable again. The long-term consequences of this environmentally critical decision were difficult to assess at the time and were left to observation. In the aftermath of these natural disasters, and in cases of emergency, the proactive use of screening level models may prove to be an important factor in making appropriate decisions to identify cost effective and environmentally friendly mitigation solutions. In this paper, we propose such a model and demonstrate its use through the application of several hypothetical scenarios to examine the likely response of Lake Pontchartrain to the contaminant loading that were possibly in the New Orleans floodwaters. For this purpose, an unsteady-state fugacity model was developed in order to examine the environmental effects of contaminants with different physicochemical characteristics on Lake Pontchartrain. The three representative contaminants selected for this purpose are benzene, atrazine, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The proposed approach yields continuous fugacity values for contaminants in the water, air, and sediment compartments of the lake system which are analogous to concentrations. Since contaminant data for the floodwaters are limited, an uncertainty analysis was also performed in this study. The effects of uncertainty in the model parameters were investigated through Monte Carlo analysis. Results indicate that the acceptable recovery of Lake Pontchartrain will require a long period of time. The computed time range for the levels of the three contaminants considered in this study to decrease to maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) is about 1 year to 68 years. The model can be implemented to assess the possible extent of damage inflicted by any storm event on the natural water resources of Southern Louisiana or similar environments elsewhere. Furthermore, the model developed can be used as a useful decision-making tool for planning and remediation in similar emergency situations by examining various potential contamination scenarios and their consequences. 相似文献

Eco-health evaluation for the Shanghai metropolitan area during the recent industrial transformation (1990-2003) 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Shanghai is a cosmopolitan city and one of the most important economic centers in China, but is saddled with serious environmental problems resulting from a recent industrial transformation. This paper examines the interactive relationships between economic growth, eco-efficiency of urban metabolism, and environmental performance of the Shanghai metropolitan area since the 1990s using 15 indicators. This study has revealed an enhanced eco-efficiency of water and energy use as well as an improved overall environmental quality in the central urban districts of Shanghai. Both TGDP (total GDP) and GDP per capita increased rapidly at the annual rate of 16.28% and 15.91%, respectively. In contrast, energy consumed per 10000RMB YUAN GDP (ECG), water consumed per 10000RMB YUAN GDP (WCG), wastewater discharged per 10000RMB YUAN GDP (WWDG), and waste gases emitted per 10000RMB YUAN GDP (WGEG) decreased at the annual rate of 9.34%, 10.69%, 14.57%, and 8.52%, respectively. The rapid decline in ECG, WCG, WWDG, and WGEG indicates an enhanced eco-efficiency of urban metabolism. However, uncontrolled emission of wastes from domestic instead of industrial sources adversely affected the overall environmental quality. In addition, suburban areas have undergone rapid economic growth at the cost of human health deterioration, as measured by mortalities and relative mortality ratios of three major diseases (tumor, respiratory disease, and trauma/toxicosis). With Shanghai serving as the "locomotive" driving the economy of the Yangtze River Basin, effective pollution control policies and a network of regional coordination are urgently needed in the globalization and ecological security of the entire area. 相似文献

Abstract: Managers, regulators, and researchers of aquatic ecosystems are increasingly pressed to consider large areas. However, accurate stream maps with geo‐referenced attributes are uncommon over relevant spatial extents. Field inventories provide high‐quality data, particularly for habitat characteristics at fine spatial resolutions (e.g., large wood), but are costly and so cover relatively small areas. Recent availability of regional digital data and Geographic Information Systems software has advanced capabilities to delineate stream networks and estimate coarse‐resolution hydrogeomorphic attributes (e.g., gradient). A spatially comprehensive coverage results, but types of modeled outputs may be limited and their accuracy is typically unknown. Capitalizing on strengths in both field and regional digital data, we modeled a synthetic stream network and a variety of hydrogeomorphic attributes for the Oregon Coastal Province. The synthetic network, encompassing 96,000 km of stream, was derived from digital elevation data. We used high‐resolution but spatially restricted data from field inventories and streamflow gauges to evaluate, calibrate, and interpret hydrogeomorphic attributes modeled from digital elevation and precipitation data. The attributes we chose to model (drainage area, mean annual precipitation, mean annual flow, probability of perennial flow, channel gradient, active‐channel width and depth, valley‐floor width, valley‐width index, and valley constraint) have demonstrated value for stream research and management. For most of these attributes, field‐measured, and modeled values were highly correlated, yielding confidence in the modeled outputs. The modeled stream network and attributes have been used for a variety of purposes, including mapping riparian areas, identifying headwater streams likely to transport debris flows, and characterizing the potential of streams to provide high‐quality habitat for salmonids. Science-policy integration is one of the many complex challenges that scientific and policy-making communities are facing.
It involves knowledge sharing and exchanges among a wide range of disciplines and actors. In many instances, the lack of proper
communication and of a coordination mechanism leads to research outputs not being used or simply known by policy-makers, and
to policy research needs not being communicated to the scientific communities in a timely fashion. This paper discusses the
integration of scientific and technological progress into the policy-making and implementation process, with emphasis on water
policies. It highlights the need and complexity of developing a knowledge-based approach which would enable to lead to an
operational science-policy interface linked to WISE (Water Information System for Europe), including the newly developed WISERTD
webportal ().

off northeast Sakhalin Island, Russia. DalMorNefteGeofizika (DMNG) on behalf of the Sakhalin-1 consortium conducted a 3-D
seismic survey of the Odoptu license area during 17 August–9 September 2001. A portion of the primary feeding area of the
endangered western gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) is located in the vicinity of the seismic survey. This paper presents data to assess whether western gray whale bottom feeding
activity, as indicated by visible mud plumes, was affected by seismic operations. The mitigation and monitoring program associated
with the seismic survey included aerial surveys during 19 July–19 November 2001. These aerial surveys documented the local
and regional distribution, abundance, and bottom feeding activity of western gray whales. Data on gray whale feeding activity
before, during and after the seismic survey were collected, with the whales assumed to be feeding on the benthos if mud plumes
were observed on the surface. The data were used to assess the influence of seismic survey and other factors (including environmental)
on feeding activity of western gray whales. A stepwise multiple regression analysis failed to find a statistically significant
effect (α = 0.05) of the seismic survey on frequency of occurrence of mud plumes of western gray whales used as a proxy to evaluate
bottom feeding activity in Piltun feeding area. The regression indicated that transect number (a proxy for water depth, related
to distance from shore) and swell height (a proxy for sea state) were the only variables that had a significant effect on
frequency of whale mud plumes. It is concluded that the 2001 seismic survey had no measurable effect (α = 0.05) on bottom feeding activity of western gray whales off Sakhalin Island.

if there was any measurable effect of the seismic survey on the distribution and abundance of western gray whales. Mitigation
and monitoring program included aerial surveys conducted between 19 July and 19 November using the methodology outlined by
the Southern California High Energy Seismic Survey team (HESS). These surveys provided documentation of the distribution,
abundance and bottom feeding activity of western gray whales in relation to seismic survey sounds. From an operations perspective,
the aerial surveys provided near real-time data on the location of whales in and outside the feeding area, and documented
whether whales were displaced out of an area normally used as feeding habitat. The objectives of this study were to assess
(a) temporal changes in the distribution and abundance of gray whales in relation to seismic survey, and (b) the influence
of seismic survey, environmental factors, and other variables on the distribution and abundance of gray whales within their
preferred feeding area adjacent to Piltun Bay. Multiple regression analysis revealed a limited redistribution of gray whales
southward within the Piltun feeding area when the seismic survey was fully operational. A total of five environmental and
other variables unrelated to seismic survey (date and proxies of depth, sea state and visibility) and one seismic survey-related
variable (seg3d, i.e., received sound energy accumulated over 3 days) had statistically significant effects on the distribution and abundance
of gray whales. The distribution of two to four gray whales observed on the surface (i.e., about five to ten whales in total)
has likely been affected by the seismic survey. However, the total number of gray whales observed within the Piltun feeding
area remained stable during the seismic survey.

This study examines energy use patterns and the relationship between energy inputs and yield for canola production in Golestan province of Iran. Data used in this study were obtained from 130 randomly selected canola farms using a face to face survey. The results revealed that total energy of 17,786.36 MJ ha−1 was required for canola production and fertilizer, diesel fuel and electricity were the main energy consuming inputs. Energy use efficiency and energy productivity were 3.02 and 0.12 kg MJ−1, respectively. Moreover, in specifying a functional relationship the Cobb-Douglas production function was applied and the results showed that machinery, fertilizer, diesel fuel and water for irrigation energies significantly contributed to yield. Also, the marginal physical productivity (MPP) technique was applied to analyze the sensitivity of energy inputs. It was found that, canola production had more sensitivity on machinery, fertilizer and water for irrigation energies; so that an additional use of 1 MJ from each of the machinery, total fertilizer and water for irrigation would lead to an increase in production by 0.93, 0.61 and 0.24 kg, respectively. However, electricity and seed energies were contributed negatively to yield, which may result in inverse effect on yield and impose risks to the environment. 相似文献
