Brood guarding animals face many critical trade-offs. Sand goby males (Pomatoschistus minutus) build nests with larger openings during low oxygen conditions, presumably to enhance ventilation. However, this may make
the nest easier for egg predators to detect and harder for guarding males to defend. Manipulating oxygen level and predator
presence (a small crab) for small and large males, we found support for a parental trade-off between fanning and nest defense.
An increased fanning activity resulted in less time for guarding. Small males and males in low oxygen showed a higher fanning
expenditure than large males and males in high oxygen, but surprisingly, filial cannibalism did not differ between these groups.
Males built larger nest openings in low than high oxygen. However, males in both high and low oxygen treatments reduced their
nest opening size in the presence of a predator, again indicating an important trade-off between ventilation and nest defense. 相似文献

For polygynous mammals with no paternal care, the number of offspring sired is often the sole measure of male reproductive
success. The potential for polygyny is highest when resources or other environmental factors such as restricted breeding sites
force females to aggregate. In these circumstances, males compete intensely for females and mating success may vary greatly
among males, further intensifying selection for those traits that confer an advantage in reproduction. Hence, determinants
of male success in competition for females are likely to be under strong sexual selection. Paternity analysis was used in
conjunction with measures of age, site fidelity, and behavior during the breeding season to assess variance in male breeding
success in Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) breeding at Turtle Rock, McMurdo Sound (77.727S, 166.85E) between 1997 and 2000. Paternity could be assigned to 177 pups
at relaxed or 80% confidence level or 111 pups at strict or 95% confidence levels. Weddell seals at Turtle Rock show a modest
degree of polygyny with the greatest number of pups sired by any individual male in a single season equalling 5 or ∼10% of
the pups born. Over four consecutive years, most (89.2%) males sired at least one pup. In a generalized linear model (GLM),
age and the age first seen at the study site as an adult were unrelated to mating success, but adult experience, either site-specific
or elsewhere in McMurdo Sound, over the reproductive life span of males explained nearly 40% of variance in total mating success
with 80% confidence and 24% of variance at 95% confidence. While learning where females are likely to be may enhance male
reproductive success, aquatic mating reduces the ability of males to monopolize females, and thereby increases equity in mating
success. 相似文献

The red bishop (Euplectes orix) is a highly polygynous and colonial weaverbird. Males construct several nests within their territories to which they try
to attract females, and females are solely responsible for incubation and raising offspring. In this paper, we describe the
characteristics of the red bishop’s mating system as a biological market and investigate the role of nests built by males
as a traded commodity in a mating market. As timing of breeding in red bishops in arid and semi-arid zones depends on rainfall
patterns which are often unpredictable, there are temporal changes in demand for and supply of nests within a breeding season,
with breeding activities of males and females being highly synchronised. We found that males increased their nest-building
speed with increased female breeding activity independently of rainfall, indicating that supply follows demand in this mating
market. The supply of nests was always larger than the demand for nests. Construction costs for nests increased with demand
for nests as indicated by shorter nest-building duration and shorter building delays between two consecutively built nests
at times of high breeding activity. Males as a trading class are chosen according to the age of their nests offered, with
young nests having a higher probability of being accepted by females. Furthermore, female choosiness with regard to nest age
decreased when their own market value decreased, as predicted by biological market theory. The temporal changes of breeding
activity together with the female preference for young and fresh nests require that males quickly adjust nest-building activity
to varying female demand for new nests. However, males with a better adjustment of building speed to female breeding activity
did not gain higher mating success. 相似文献

The extent to which male birds in polygynous species with biparental care assist in nestling feeding often varies considerably
between nests of different mating status. Both how much polygynous males assist and how they divide their effort between nests
may have a profound effect on the evolution of mating systems. In this study we investigated how males in the facultatively
polygynous European starling Sturnus vulgaris invested in their different nests. The amount of male assistance affected the quality of the offspring. Polygynous males
invested as much as monogamous males, but divided their effort asymmetrically between nests, predominantly feeding nestlings
of first-mated (primary) females. Although females partly compensated for loss of male assistance, total feeding frequency
was lower at primary females’ nests than at monogamous females nests. Secondary females received even less assistance with
nestling rearing, and the extent to which males assisted decreased with the length of the interval between the hatching of
the primary and secondary clutches. These results are contrasted with those from a Belgian populations of starlings with a
much more protracted breeding season and thus greater opportunities for males to attract additional mates during the nestling
rearing period. The results show that both the “defence of male parental investment model” and the “asynchronous settlement
model” have explanatory power, but that their validity depends on the potential length of the breeding season.

Summary Social behavior of a species in the little-known insect order Zoraptera is described for the first time. Zorotypus gurneyi Choe (Insecta: Zoraptera) is a wing-dimorphic species that lives colonially under the bark of rotting logs in central Panama. Males are larger than females in total body size and fight each other to gain access to females. Highly linear and stable dominance hierarchies exist among males. Higher-ranking males show such agonistic behavior as jerking, chasing, head-butting, hindleg-kicking, and grappling, whereas subordinates often try to avoid contacts. Higher-ranking males, the dominant males in particular, are well recognized by others and relatively free of injuries. Although the dominant males are often the largest, the correlation between body size and dominance rank is not always significant. The mating system of Z. gurneyi is an example of female defense polygyny in which the dominant males obtain the majority of matings (75% on average). Mating success among Z. gurneyi males is much more variable than that of some lekking species. 相似文献

Despite common stereotypes, males are not always indiscriminate and eager when it comes to mating. In the parasitoid wasp Spalangia endius, the initial response of males to females was almost always one of apparent excitement; however, this was followed by a clear preference for virgin females over mated females in both no-choice and choice situations. The no-choice data were collected from videotapes of male-female pairs of all possible combinations of mated and virgin individuals. Neither female nor male mating status had a significant effect on likelihood of, or time until, contact or male courtship fanning. However, a males first retreat was sooner when the female was mated than when she was virgin; mated males exhibited their first retreat sooner than did virgin males; and mated females were less likely to be mounted than were virgin females. In addition to the videotapes, male-choice experiments were performed. When given a choice of a virgin and a mated female, both virgin and mated males were more likely to mount and copulate with the virgin. The difference in response to virgin versus mated females seemed to be less in virgin males than in mated males, perhaps due to virgin males greater eagerness to mate: when a virgin male and a mated male were presented with a dead virgin female, the virgin male was usually the first to respond to the female. That males preferentially retreated from and avoided mounting mated females appears to be adaptive given that mated females rarely copulated.Communicated by N. Wedell 相似文献

The dynamics of male-male competition for mates and patterns of female choice depend critically on the social environment. We released newly molted sexually receptive females of the rock shrimp Rhynchocinetes typus in the field and recorded their interactions with males. In the dense aggregations in which these shrimp live, most females were encountered and seized by males within 2 min. Usually, females were first seized by subordinate males, and subsequently taken over by the dominant males. Many females (17 out of 23) had multiple mates during the 10-min observation period, and most of them received spermatophores from multiple males. Males used different mating tactics in accordance with their dominance status: subordinate males often used the sneaking tactic, seizing the female and immediately transferring spermatophores. In contrast, all dominant males used the primary mating tactic; they seized and stimulated the female before transferring spermatophores. Results from previous studies had indicated that females may reduce the fertilization chances of subordinate males by delaying spawning and removing spermatophores. We suggest that this capability in combination with the observed rapid mate succession may enable females to exploit male contest behaviors.Communicated by P. Backwell 相似文献

The effects of three re-designed models of sewing scissors on hand performance measures, discomfort and usability were investigated, and the results were compared with those of conventional scissors. Adjustments were made to the scissors handle with emphasis on more neutral wrist postures (bent handle - model A), correction of the thumb's position and movements (model B) and reducing hand/finger discomfort (model C) while working with the tool. The results showed some improvements in hand performance, muscular effort, usability and discomfort with model B compared to the conventional model. Better hand performance and usability and lower discomfort were recorded with model C compared to the conventional model. The results suggest that the correction of the thumb's position and movement (model B) or even reduced hand/finger discomfort (model C) are perhaps more important considerations in scissors design than improved wrist posture (model A) for improving users' performance and usability of the tool. 相似文献

Abstract: Without robust and unbiased systems for monitoring, changes in natural systems will remain enigmatic for policy makers, leaving them without a clear idea of the consequences of any environmental policies they might adopt. Generally, biodiversity-monitoring activities are not integrated or evaluated across any large geographic region. The EuMon project conducted the first large-scale evaluation of monitoring practices in Europe through an on-line questionnaire and is reporting on the results of this survey. In September 2007 the EuMon project had documented 395 monitoring schemes for species, which represents a total annual cost of about €4 million, involving more than 46,000 persons devoting over 148,000 person-days/year to biodiversity-monitoring activities. Here we focused on the analysis of variations of monitoring practices across a set of taxonomic groups (birds, amphibians and reptiles, mammals, butterflies, plants, and other insects) and across 5 European countries (France, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, and Poland). Our results suggest that the overall sampling effort of a scheme is linked with the proportion of volunteers involved in that scheme. Because precision is a function of the number of monitored sites and the number of sites is maximized by volunteer involvement, our results do not support the common belief that volunteer-based schemes are too noisy to be informative. Just the opposite, we believe volunteer-based schemes provide relatively reliable data, with state-of-the-art survey designs or data-analysis methods, and consequently can yield unbiased results. Quality of data collected by volunteers is more likely determined by survey design, analytical methodology, and communication skills within the schemes rather than by volunteer involvement per se. 相似文献

In the FAIR project “Pheromaize”, CT96-1302, the main objective is to provide European growers with a reliable, cost effective
and environmentally friendly technology based on pest mating disruption. The project is mainly focused on Mediterranean Corn
Borer (MCB), Sesamia nonagroides, the key pest of maize grown under Mediterranean conditions. TNO has developed a sprayable formulation consisting of a biodegradable
matrix in which␣the pheromone is dissolved, together with a UV––stabilizer, an antioxidant, a surfactant and a sticker material.
During outdoor exposure experiments release of pheromone was found to be high enough for more than 30 days. This formulation
has been tested in large scale field experiments by helicopter spraying on 5 ha maize by field partners in Spain, Greece and
France. 相似文献
