Agricultural expansion and deforestation are spatial processes of land transformation that impact on landscape pattern. In
peninsular Malaysia, the conversion of forested areas into two major cash crops—rubber and oil palm plantations—has been identified
as driving significant environmental change. To date, there has been insufficient literature studying the link between changes
in landscape patterns and land-related development policies. Therefore, this paper examines: (i) the links between development
policies and changes in land use/land cover and landscape pattern and (ii) the significance and implications of these links
for future development policies. The objective is to generate insights on the changing process of land use/land cover and
landscape pattern as a functional response to development policies and their consequences for environmental conditions. Over
the last century, the development of cash crops has changed the country from one dominated by natural landscapes to one dominated
by agricultural landscapes. But the last decade of the century saw urbanization beginning to impact significantly. This process
aligned with the establishment of various development policies, from land development for agriculture between the mid 1950s
and the 1970s to an emphasis on manufacturing from the 1980s onward. Based on a case study in Selangor, peninsular Malaysia,
a model of landscape pattern change is presented. It contains three stages according to the relative importance of rubber
(first stage: 1900–1950s), oil palm (second stage: 1960s–1970s), and urban (third stage: 1980s–1990s) development that influenced
landscape fragmentation and heterogeneity. The environmental consequences of this change have been depicted through loss of
biodiversity, geohazard incidences, and the spread of vector-borne diseases. The spatial ecological information can be useful
to development policy formulation, allowing diagnosis of the country’s “health” and sustainability. The final section outlines
the usefulness of landscape analysis in the policy-making process to prevent further fragmentation of the landscape and forest
loss in Malaysia in the face of rapid economic development.

The high demand for water in oil sands operations in addition to the shortage of fresh water resources mandate continuous search for reliable and cost effective water treatment technologies. Micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) is potentially applicable to produced water treatment. MEUF is, however, susceptible to membrane plugging and back contamination, especially at high surfactant dosages. Recent investigations showed that addition of small amounts of a non-ionic surfactant to an ionic surfactant solution reduces the critical micellar concentration (CMC) of the mixed surfactant solution, and consequently reduces the surfactant dosage required to achieve certain removal of contaminants using MEUF. In the present study a naphthenic acid, octanoic acid, typically existing in produced water is shown to play a similar role as the non-ionic surfactant when added to the cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC). Cross-flow MEUF using three different molecular weight cutoffs (MWCOs) of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) hollow fiber membranes was used to treat synthetic produced water containing p-xylene. The mixed CPC/octanoic acid solution removed comparable percentages of p-xylene contaminant at much lower concentrations of CPC. Decreasing CPC concentration in the feed resulted in less fouling and higher permeate flux and reduced back contamination. This, in turn, enhanced the performance of MEUF. 相似文献

The catalytic decomposition of mixed plastics consisting of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has been
investigated over titania/silica catalysts at 698 K. The yield of oil produced was about 70%, and the large amounts of C18+ hydrocarbons this contained was from the aromatics in PET. Gas was also produced, including C3–C5 hydrocarbons. The carbon-number fractions in the oil was influenced by the PET/(PP + PET) ratios and the catalyst weight.
The titania/silica catalysts could be used repeatedly, and after they had been fouled, could be regenerated. From the Fourier
Transform Infrared (FT–IR) spectroscopic data of adsorbed pyridine on the catalyst surface, most of the acid sites of the
titania/silica catalysts were found to be Lewis sites where the hydride abstracted from PP pyrolysates react with PET pyrolysates
to form oil and gas.

Crude-oil-inundated soils were collected from the Agbada oil field in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria 2 months after the recorded incidence of oil spillage. The soils were taken on the second day of reconnaissance from three replicate quadrats, at surface (0-15 cm) and subsurface (15-30 cm) depths, using the grid sampling technique. The total extractable hydrocarbon content (THC) of the polluted soils ranged from 1.24 × 102 to 3.86 × 104 mg/kg at surface and subsurface depths (no overlap in standard errors at a 95% confidence level). Greenhouse trials for possible reclamation were later carried out using 10-100 g of (NH4)2SO4, KH2PO4 and KCl (NPK) fertilizer as nutrient supplements. Nitrogen as NO3-N and potassium were optimally enhanced at 2% (w/w) and 3% (w/w) of the NPK supplementation, respectively. Phosphorus, which was inherently more enhanced in the soils than the other nutrients, maintained the same level of impact after treatment with 20 g of NPK fertilizer. Total organic carbon (%TOC), total organic matter (%TOM), pH, and percentage moisture content all provided evidence of enhanced mineralization in the fertilizer-treated soils. If reclamation of the crude-oil-inundated soils is construed as the return to normal levels of metabolic activities of the soils, then the application of the inorganic fertilizers at such prescribed levels would duly accelerate the remediation process. However, this would be limited to levels of pollution empirically defined by such THC values obtained in this study. 相似文献
