Modelling directional spatial processes in ecological data 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Distributions of species, animals or plants, terrestrial or aquatic, are influenced by numerous factors such as physical and biogeographical gradients. Dominant wind and current directions cause the appearance of gradients in physical conditions whereas biogeographical gradients can be the result of historical events (e.g. glaciations). No spatial modelling technique has been developed to this day that considers the direction of an asymmetric process controlling species distributions along a gradient or network. This paper presents a new method that can model species spatial distributions generated by a hypothesized asymmetric, directional physical process. This method is an eigenfunction-based spatial filtering technique that offers as much flexibility as the Moran's eigenvector maps (MEM) framework; it is called asymmetric eigenvector maps (AEM) modelling. Information needed to construct eigenfunctions through the AEM framework are the spatial coordinates of the sampling or experimental sites, a connexion diagram linking the sites to one another, prior information about the direction of the hypothesized asymmetric process influencing the response variable(s), and optionally, weights attached to the edges (links). To illustrate how this new method works, AEM is compared to MEM analysis through simulations and in the analysis of an ecological example where a known asymmetric forcing is present. Ecological factors differently affect male and female animals and thereby importantly influence their life history and reproductive
strategies. Caviomorph rodents are found in a wide range of habitats in South America and different social and mating systems
have evolved in closely related species. This permits to study the impact of ecological factors on social evolution. In this
study, we investigated the social organization and the mating system of the wild cavy (Cavia aperea), the ancestor of the domestic guinea pig, in its natural habitat in Uruguay. Based on our laboratory investigations, we
expected a polygynous system with large males controlling access to females. Results from radiotelemetry and direct observations
showed that females occupied small stable home ranges which were largely overlapped by that of one large male, resulting in
a social organization of small harems. In some cases, small satellite males were associated with harems and intermediate-sized
roaming males were occasionally observed on the study site. However, microsatellite analyses revealed that offspring were
exclusively sired by large males of the same or neighboring harems, with a moderate degree of multiple paternity (13–27%).
Thus, the mating system of C. aperea can be described as polygynous and contrasts with the promiscuous organization described for other species of cavies (Cavia magna, Galea musteloides and Microcavia australis) living under different ecological conditions. Our findings stress the strong impact of environmental factors on social evolution
in Caviomorphs as resource distribution determines female space use and, thereby, the ability of males to monopolize females.

Landscapes exhibit various degrees of spatial heterogeneity according to the differential intensity and interactions among
processes and disturbances that they are subjected to. The management of these spatially dynamical landscapes requires that
we can accurately map them and monitor the evolution of their spatial arrangement through time. Such a mapping requires first
the delineation of various spatial features present in the landscape such as patches and their boundaries. However, there
are several environmental (spatial variability) as well as technical (spatial resolution) factors that impair our ability
to accurately delineate patches and their boundaries as polygons. Here, we investigate how the spatial structure and spatial
resolution of the data affect the accuracy of detecting patches and their boundaries over simulated landscapes and real data.
Simulated landscapes consisted of two patches with parameterized spatial properties (patches’ level of spatial autocorrelation,
mean value and variance) separated by a boundary of known location. Real data allowed the investigation of a more complex
landscape where there is a known transition between two forest domains with unknown spatial properties. Boundary locations
are defined using the lattice-wombling edge detector at various aggregation levels and the degree of patch homogeneity is
determined using Getis-Ord’s G*. Results show that boundary detection using a local edge detector is greatly affected by the spatial conditions of the data,
namely variance, abruptness of the spatial gradient between two patches and patches’ level of spatial autocorrelation. They
also suggest that data aggregation is not a panacea for bringing out the ecological process creating the patches and that
indicators derived from local measures of spatial association can be complementary tools for analysing spatial structures
affecting boundary delineation.

Precise knowledge about factors influencing the habitat suitability of a certain species forms the basis for the implementation
of effective programs to conserve biological diversity. Such knowledge is frequently gathered from studies relating abundance
data to a set of influential variables in a regression setup. In particular, generalised linear models are used to analyse
binary presence/absence data or counts of a certain species at locations within an observation area. However, one of the key
assumptions of generalised linear models, the independence of observations is often violated in practice since the points
at which the observations are collected are spatially aligned. In this paper, we describe a general framework for semiparametric
spatial generalised linear models that allows for the routine analysis of non-normal spatially aligned regression data. The
approach is utilised for the analysis of a data set of synthetic bird species in beech forests, revealing that ignorance of
spatial dependence actually may lead to false conclusions in a number of situations.

This paper describes the importance of modelling various forms of maritime traffic as an intrinsic element of this process.
Effective use of GIS in this context implies extensive data acquisition and cleaning, vessel path simulation, traffic density
maps, and incident (spills or accidents) distribution when applicable. Risks can be determined by evaluating detrimental occurrences
relative to exposure levels. Effective visualization and quantitative analyses can then be fruitfully applied to various coastal

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are critical to the well-being of threatened ecosystems and thus can be highly beneficial to humans, especially to those residing nearby. We explore the qualities of 117 MPAs in the Mediterranean basin and develop a taxonomy of their characteristics. We relate the spatial distribution of the MPAs to the various characteristics of the taxonomy (size, distance from shore, protection levels, management regimes, etc.) and to areas of high human impact and influence levels. To do this we use information on biogeographic regions and information from two different human influence models; one model developed for the marine environment and one covering the littoral terrestrial environment. Our analysis provides insights to planners and managers working in a regional capacity and trying to build MPA networks. Generally, current MPAs have not been established in high impact areas despite their being close to shores containing intense human activity. Decision-makers wishing to design and establish new MPAs may seek out areas of high cumulative human impacts (near the marine-terrestrial interface) or avoid them depending on marine conservation objectives, including the desire to vary types of MPAs within a network. Limitations of our analysis and methodology indicate areas for further research. 相似文献

Abstract The fumigant 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) is considered to be a potential replacement for methyl bromide when methyl bromide is phased out in 2005. This study on surface emissions and subsurface diffusion of 1,3-D in a Florida sandy soil was conducted in field beds with or without plastic covers. After injection of the commercial fumigant Telone II by conventional chisels to field beds at 30 cm depth which were covered with polyethylene film (PE), virtually impermeable film, or no cover (bare), (Z)- and (E)-1,3-D rapidly diffused upward. Twenty hours after injection, majority of (Z)- and (E)-1,3-D had moved upward from 30 cm depth to the layer of 5–20 cm depth. Downward movement of the two isomers in the beds with or without a plastic cover was not significant. (Z)-1,3-D diffused more rapidly than (E)-1,3-D. Virtually impermeable films (VIF) had a good capacity to retain (Z)- and (E)-1,3-D in soil pore air space. Vapor concentrations of the two isomers in the shallow subsurface of the field bed covered with VIF were greater than that in the two beds covered with polyethylene film (PE) or no cover (bare). In addition, VIF cover provided more uniform distribution of (Z)- and (E)-1,3-D in shallow subsurface than PE cover or no cover. Virtually impermeable film also had a better capability to retard surface emissions of the two isomers from soil in field beds than PE cover or no cover. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyse the variability of four different benthic biotic indices (AMBI, BENTIX, H′, M-AMBI) in two marine coastal areas of the North-Western Mediterranean Sea. In each coastal area, 36 replicates were randomly selected according to a hierarchical sampling design, which allowed estimating the variance components of the indices associated with four different spatial scales (ranging from metres to kilometres). All the analyses were performed at two different sampling periods in order to evaluate if the observed trends were consistent over the time. The variance components of the four indices revealed complex trends and different patterns in the two sampling periods. These results highlighted that independently from the employed index, a rigorous and appropriate sampling design taking into account different scales should always be used in order to avoid erroneous classifications and to develop effective monitoring programs. 相似文献
