Regression models of mean and mean annual maximum (MAM) cover were derived for two categories of periphyton cover (filaments and mats) using 22 years of monthly monitoring data from 78 river sites across New Zealand. Explanatory variables were derived from observations of water quality variables, hydrology, shade, bed sediment grain size, temperature, and solar radiation. The root mean square errors of these models were large (75‐95% of the mean of the estimated values). The at‐site frequency distributions of periphyton cover were approximated by the exponential distribution, which has the mean cover as its single parameter. Independent predictions of cover distributions at all sites were calculated using the mean predicted by the regression model and the theoretical exponential distribution. The probability that cover exceeds specified thresholds and estimates of MAM cover, based on the predicted distributions, had large uncertainties (~80‐100%) at the site scale. However, predictions aggregated by classes of an environmental classification accurately predicted the proportion of sites for which cover exceeded nominated criteria in the classes. The models are useful for assessing broad‐scale patterns in periphyton cover and for estimating changes in cover with changes in nutrients, hydrological regime, and light. 相似文献

After many years of research and debate, in August of 1997 the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) and Emission Guidelines (EG) for medical/infectious waste incinerators in the United States. These new emissions and operational standards establish considerably more restrictive limitations on air emissions for medical/infectious waste incinerators and will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the over 2300 hospitals presently operating an incinerator on-site. This paper will explore the options available to these facilities, and those facilities which may be considering installation of an incinerator, relative to achieving compliance with the NSPS and EG for medical/infectious waste incinerators. 相似文献

Abstract In this work, low temperature geothermal district heating systems with heat pumps have been studied and compared with fuel-oil boiler heating systems for intermittent and continuous regimes according to the optimum indoor air temperature and operational cost. Izmir Institute of Technology (IZTECH) Campus is taken as a case study. Various heat pump and boiler configurations are studied to meet required duty. Operational cost analysis for each alternative is conducted. We conducted a natural resource assessment at two national parks, New River Gorge National River and Shenandoah National Park,
to help meet the goals of the Natural Resource Challenge—a program to help strengthen natural resource management at national
parks. We met this challenge by synthesizing and interpreting natural resource information for planning purposes and we identified
information gaps and natural significance of resources. We identified a variety of natural resources at both parks as being
globally and/or nationally significant, including large expanses of unfragmented, mixed-mesophytic forests that qualify for
wilderness protection, rare plant communities, diverse assemblages of neotropical migratory birds and salamanders, and outstanding
aquatic recreational resources. In addition, these parks function, in part, as ecological reserves for plants in and wildlife.
With these significant natural resources in mind, we also developed a suite of natural resource management recommendations
in light of increasing threats from within and outside park boundaries. We hope that our approach can provide a blueprint

Abstract This article presents a case study of a projected solar assisted biomass district heating system in the north of Sweden. It is generally known that a biomass district heating system combined with solar heat brings many important benefits. The most common system solution is to install a heat store and a large solar collector field near the heating central. No plant of this type is however in operation in the northern part of Sweden. The main reason for this is that the solar irradiation at these latitudes is very low when the demand for heat is high. Solar heat could however be useful during summer in order to generate hot tap water. One problem is that the heat losses, calculated as percentage of the delivered heat, become very large during these months. This article presents the idea of allowing the connected households to generate their own hot tap water using solar collectors and heat stores installed in each house. The district heating network can therefore be closed in summer, which eliminates the heat losses outside the heating period. A case study of a projected plant has been carried out and it is shown that it is possible to reduce the heat losses by 20% compared to a conventional system. This idea also provides many other important technical and economic benefits. 相似文献

The role of the central government in New Zealand is generally limited to research and policy development, and regional councils
are responsible for most monitoring and management of the problem. The role of the federal government in the United States
includes research and monitoring, policy development, and regulation. States also have a significant management role. Both
countries rely on voluntary approaches for NPS pollution management. Very few national water quality standards exist in New
Zealand, whereas standards are widely used in the United States. Loading estimates and modeling are often used in the United
States, but not in New Zealand. A wide range of best management practices (BMPs) are used in the United States, including
buffer strips and constructed/engineered wetlands. Buffer strips and riparian management have been emphasized and used widely
in New Zealand.
Many approaches are common to both countries, but management of the problem has only been partly successful. The primary barriers
are the inadequacy of the voluntary approach and the lack of scientific tools that are useful to decision-makers. More work
needs to be performed on the evaluation of approaches developed in both countries that could be applied in the other countries.
In addition, more cooperation and information/technology transfer between the two countries should be encouraged in the future. 相似文献
