Measurements have been made of the radionuclide activities, particularly for plutonium isotopes, of the particulate and dissolved fractions of the tidal waters of the Esk Estuary. A wide range of Kd values indicates the lack of equilibrium conditions in this dynamically changing environment. The particulate activity contributes a major part of the activity of the suspension, with reworked estuarine sediment providing an important component of this. The estuarine circulation system results in the dispersion of particulate radionuclides into the low salinity upper reaches of the estuary, where plutonium isotopes are apparently mobilised, enriching the dissolved fraction activity. 相似文献

This study evaluated yield production and changes in the patterns of functional growth analysis parameters of greenhouse-grown soybeans exposed to low concentrations of ozone (O3). Plants were exposed over a 113-day interval for 341 h to four concentrations of O3 (2.0, 4.6, 7.0 and 9.7 pphm O3) on an intermittent basis. Destructive harvests were periodically taken from all treatments to monitor plant response and to provide the basis for growth analysis techniques. Relative to the ambient greenhouse air control treatment (2.0 pphm O3), 7.0 and 9.7 pphm O3 typically reduced plant biomass accumulation, leaf area and expansion, relative growth rate, unit leaf rate, seeds per plant (35% reduction), and other yield components; however, the growth and yield parameters of the 4.6 pphm O3 treatment were often stimulated. With this one exception, O3 reduced soybean vegetative growth and altered the pattern of biomass partitioning. As a consequence, the soybean yields were also reduced. 相似文献

A sampling and analysis method for PAH from two-stroke engines is described. The method, which uses a standard glass fiber filter with a back-up section of Amberlite XAD-2 for sampling and GC or GC-MS for analysis, is suitable for both emission studies and occupational studies during logging. Filters and XAD-2 are desorbed with cyclohexane in an ultrasonic bath. After separation on a silica-gel micro column, the samples are submitted to analyses by capillary GC. The method is simple and covers both gaseous and particulate PAH. Naphthalene and alkyl substituted naphthalenes are also quantified. 相似文献

The distribution of Nickel-63, Iron-59, Manganese-54 and Tin-113 in plasma was studied in rats which received single intravenous (i.v.) injection of aqueous solutions of their salts alone, and in rats which also received single intramuscular (im) injection of triethylene tetramine (TETA). In evaluating current environmental protection policy, economists often note that current regulations are more costly than necessary to meet environmental quality standards. While the a priori case is strong that current regulatory approaches are resulting in higher-than-necessary costs to attain environmental standards, there is relatively little empirical evidence to support this claim. The purpose of this paper is to supply some of the missing evidence by presenting the results of one study that assesses some of the potential savings associated with implementing economic, rather than command-and-control, regulatory approaches to abate one type of air pollution in one region of the country. Specifically, the paper examines the costs of meeting a prospective short-term standard for nitrogen dioxide under a range of alternative emissions control strategies for stationary sources of nitrogen oxide emissions in the Chicago Air Quality Control Region. The alternative strategies that are considered range from those that might result under current regulatory policy to those that economic policy approaches (such as emissions charges or marketable permits) are designed to implement. The analysis shows that the most efficient program of emissions controls may be more than an order of magnitude less costly than current regulatory strategies, and that economic approaches have additional advantages over more conventional regulatory approaches. 相似文献

Further studies on the influence of zeolite type A on metal transfer in the activated sludge process
Investigations were carried out to determine the effect of zeolite type A on metal removal by activated sludge using laboratory activated sludge simulations. They were operated at constant aerator sludge age and settler surface loading. Different concentrations of raw zeolite and zeolite extracted from washing powder (0, 15, 30, 60, 120 mgl?1) were introduced into the simulations. The zeolite was added at two degrees of calcium exchanged for sodium, 25 and 75% of the maximum exchange capacity. Metals were added at concentrations typical of mixed domestic-industrial waste waters. The results show that there was no adverse effect on metal removal by the laboratory activated sludge simulations in the presence of zeolite type A. 相似文献

Total mercury concentrations in organisms typical of those found in the Cilician Basin of the northeastern Mediterranean have been measured from 1977 to the present. These concentrations show seasonal variations. Shrimp shows an approximately constant concentration of mercury which might testify to the regulation capacity of shrimp for mercury. Crab, and particular fish, show a seasonal variation which may be correlated with the local application of mercury fungicide, rainfall, and the physiology of the organisms.
