With the aim of using Mytilus galloprovincialis acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and glutathione S-transferases (GST) activities as biomarkers of environmental contamination in risk assessment studies along the northwest Portuguese coast, the objective of this study was to provide background information related to: (1) baseline values of these enzymatic activities both in reference and contaminated areas and their responsiveness as indicators of exposure to environmental contaminants; (2) the importance of seasonal variations of such biomarkers in M. galloprovincialis along this area. For this, the activity of these enzymes was seasonally determined in mussels collected from four sites, including a reference and three stations with different contamination sources along the referred area. Statistically significant differences on both enzymatic activities were found among the four sampling stations, at the four sampling periods. In comparison to the reference station, lower AChE and higher GST activity values were found in mussels collected in stations potentially contaminated by pesticides and domestic/industrial effluents and in mussels collected in the vicinity of an oil refinery and an industrial/mercantile harbour, respectively. The results obtained in this work highlighted the potential suitability of these biomarkers to be used as components of environmental monitoring programs in risk assessment studies along the northwest Portuguese coast. Since a seasonal variation in both enzymatic activities was found, the possible implications of such variability in the use of these enzymes as environmental biomarkers are also discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Bitumen and bitumen impacted soil and water samples were investigated for their relative chemical composition using comprehensive gas chromatography GcxGc – time of flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-TOFMS). The results reveal the presence of key compounds which could serve as environmental biomarkers for bitumen impacted soils and aquifers. Prominent alkanes such as 3-methylpentane; 2,2,4-trimethylpentane; 1,3,5-trimethyladamantane; 2,6,10-trimethyldodecane; 3-ethyl-2,2-dimethyl pentane were tentatively identified and are likely potent biomarkers in environmental forensic assessment of bitumen contamination while the presence of some aromatic compounds: 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, 1,2-dimethyl-3-propylbenzene; 3,4-bis(methoxycarbonyl)benzoic acid; 1,3-bezenedicarboxylic acid, 1,2-benzenediol; 1,3-dimethylbenzene; 1,2-2-(2-ethylhexoxycarbonyl)benzoic acid; (4-methylpentan-2-yl)benzene; 2,4-dimethyl benzo(H)quinolone will further confirm the bitumen contamination in an area under investigation. A host of additional compounds were tentatively identified, mainly in the bitumen samples. The results obtained in this study provides baseline data for effective monitoring, and source apportionment of oil/oil products spills.  相似文献

Biomonitoring has become a useful tool in environmental risk assessment of anthropogenic activities releasing disturbing pollutants. Permethrin, used worldwide to control a wide range of pest insects, can threaten aquatic biota, potentially useful as precocious bioindicators in ecotoxicology. This study seeks to assess the acute toxicity permethrin to the freshwater beetle, its availability in water, as well as, its uptake. The acute toxicity of permethrin to non-target species was studied under laboratory conditions to assess its effect, after the exposure 48 h, on the freshwater beetle Laccophilus minitus considering changes in some enzymatic activities; a specific biomarker of neurotoxicity (acetylcholinesterase) and a non-specific biomarker of oxidative stress (superoxide dismutase and catalase). The rates of permethrin in water and insects were determined using gas chromatography. The low measured concentration of the pesticide 0.0013 μg/L didńt modify the SOD and CAT activities in comparison with controls, only the high concentrations (0.023 and 0.18 μg/L) induced a significant increase in the enzyme activity. A similar profile was recorded for the H2O2 level. The permethrin treatment induced a drastic depletion of AChE activity. As outcomes, uptake at a low level (<6.8 ± 0.43 ng/g dry weight) showed to be the factor underlying the alterations in the beetles exposed to permethrin. Such findings provide information on the behaviour of permethrin within the environment and its biological target through its neurotoxicity and induction of oxidative stress in a freshwater beetle.  相似文献

In the present study different doses (0.05, 2.0 and 5.0?mg per 30?ml nutrient medium) of nano-powder (Azadirachta indica leaves) were applied in Cd contaminated (6?ppm) hydroponic system to regulate the metal uptake in Triticum aestivum (wheat) seedlings. Other physiological attributes including oxidative biomarkers, antioxidants and photosynthetic responses were also assessed. The level of Cd was maximally reduced at the dose of 2.0?mg nano powder per 30?ml nutrient medium by 45 and 49% in the shoot and root, respectively. With the maximum reduction in the Cd uptake at this dose, the generation of oxidative stress markers such as H2O2 (12%), MDA (26%) and SOR (20%) content showed maximum reduction in treated seedlings. At different doses of nano-powder, the activities of antioxidative enzymes were also showed significant variation. Further, the photosynthetic O2 evolution rate was improved with the treatment of nano-powder and the best response was noted at 2.0?mg per 30?ml nutrient medium with the maximum value of fresh shoot biomass (38%). The overall results suggest that, this technique could be easily applied for reducing the metal content and increasing the quality of agricultural crops.  相似文献

采用不同浓度(体积比0%~40%,经天然海水稀释而成)的市政污水处理厂(MSTP)尾水对文蛤(Meretrix meretrix)连续培养9d,通过测定9种生化因子水平评价污染暴露对双壳类的生物学效应包括:内脏中的超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)、过氧化氢酶(CAT)、谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶(GPx)、谷胱甘肽还原酶(GR)、谷胱甘肽(GSH)、乙酰胆碱酯酶(AChE)、金属硫蛋白(MTs)、硫代巴比妥酸反应物(TBARs)以及血细胞的溶酶体膜稳定性(LMS).SOD、CAT除外的所有生化因子均能对尾水污染产生敏感响应,其中,GPx、MTs、AChE和LMS的响应与尾水浓度呈显著相关(P<0.05或P<0.01),适于作为尾水污染的生物标志物;依据这些生物标志物计算的综合生物标志物响应指数值(IBRv2=0.61~2.65)随尾水浓度上升而增大,且两者间存在显著相关性(P<0.01).研究结果表明,基于生物标志物响应值计算IBR指数的方法适于MSTPs尾水-海水混合体系的综合污染评价.  相似文献

太湖复合污染胁迫下生物体抗氧化标志物的响应   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
采用清洁地饲养鲫鱼(Carassius auratus)为监测对象,采取主动生物监测法(ABM)对太湖北部湾复合污染区梅梁湖与贡湖进行为期3周的生物监测.结果表明,在有机、重金属复合污染条件下鲫鱼肌肉组织中抗氧化酶谷胱甘肽(GSH)、谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶(GP_X)与谷胱甘肽硫转移酶(GST)对污染物胁迫反应敏感,实验初期GSH出现显著抑制,而GP_X与GST出现显著诱导(P<0.05),实验后期均出现一定程度恢复,各监测点之间抗氧化酶没有表现出显著的差异.IBR综合分析表明,重金属离子对生物体抗氧化综合生物效应贡献最大,同时,浅水湖泊中风场的扰动影响不可忽略.  相似文献

The pressure for more energy demand is a strong driver for the construction of offshore oil and gas platforms. This also applies to the Adriatic Sea where, since 1960, several gas fields have been commissioned. The continuous expansion of the gas industry may potentially have detrimental effects on marine communities. This may become particularly clear in such a peculiar semi-enclosed basin as the Adriatic Sea, which contains ecosystems that are subject to intensive anthropic pressures, such as unsustainable fishing and inputs of environmental pollutants. To date, still scant information is available on the environmental effects of gas platforms. Thus, to comply with the national Italian legislation and to support the development of protocols for the monitoring of offshore activities, multidisciplinary studies have been conducted and performed by CNR-ISMAR in cooperation with some private and public research institutes. A multidisciplinary approach based on chemical, biological and ecological investigations was performed to evaluate both the water column and the sediment quality near a gas platform. The overall results indicate moderate effects of platform-related environmental stress.  相似文献

The study investigated the spatial variation in the main sources of organic matter (OM) and trophic pathways for zooplanktivorous Hilsa kelee and phytodetritivorous Valamugil buchanani in fresh-water-influenced zone versus sea-water-dominated zone of Pangani estuary. The findings indicated significant inter-specific variations in δ13C and δ15N values (ANOVA, F?≥?84.3, p?F?≥?9.4, p?=?0.001) in both estuarine zones. Results also showed significant zonal-intraspecific variations in stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N), FA profile and marginal differences in diet for the V. buchanani while no considerable differences were observed for H. kelee from two estuarine zones. The isotope mixing models and FA biomarkers revealed that the most important carbon sources to the nutrition of H. kelee were derived from microphytobenthos, macro-algae and sea grasses transferred through phytoplankton and detrital trophic pathways. In contrast, C3 terrestrial plants and microphytobenthos were the main carbon source to the diet of V. buchanani; and were transferred via the benthic and detrital trophic pathways. Therefore, both terrestrial and in-situ OM sources were the main trophic resources base fuelling the planktonic and benthic food webs in Pangani estuary.  相似文献
