This paper explores,explains and discusses issues around the dilemma between local conservation of natural resources(often,endangered species and habitats)and tourism needs in Africa.Often and in constitutional terms,local people have a right to exploit and use resources endowed in their local area.However,tourists often are interested in viewing the vegetation and animal resources undisturbed.Inevitably,there is an undeclared animosity of values and interests between local communities and tourists and state agencies.As a result,the dilemma is thus of governance.The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the governance dilemma of resource utilization and tourism in Africa in a bid to create an informed stewardship framework for sustainability.This is achieved by way of case studies and narratives from Africa.As such,this paper will be a review literature on how different communities perceive tourism and derive livelihoods from their immediate environment.It also explains how the external factors influence local needs and interests.A more sustainable and operational framework that reduces friction among stakeholders is suggested. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine how the sensitivity of BMPs performance vary due to changes in precipitation, temperature, and CO2 using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool. Sediment, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus loads on an annual and monthly basis were estimated before and after implementation of eight agricultural BMPs for different climate scenarios. Downscaled climate change data were obtained from the National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Climate System Model for the Tuttle Creek Lake watershed in Kansas and Nebraska. Using a relative sensitivity index, native grass, grazing management, and filter strips were determined to be the most sensitive for all climate change scenarios, whereas porous gully plugs, no‐tillage, and conservation tillage were the least sensitive on an annual basis. The monthly sensitivity analysis revealed that BMP sensitivity varies largely on a seasonal basis for all climate change scenarios. The results of this research suggest that the majority of agricultural BMPs tested in this study are significantly sensitive to climate change. Abstract: The constrained ordination method from quantitative ecology was utilized to assess the relationship between landscape patterns and nonpoint‐source (NPS) pollution for the purpose of identifying effective water‐quality improvement practices in Danjiangkou Reservoir (DJKR) basin, China. The soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) was applied to simulate NPS pollution and the Fragstats model was applied to calculate the landscape metrics. The study concluded that organic nutrients formed the main NPS pollutant in the DJKR basin and that most of the NPS pollution occurred along with soil loss. Based on partial redundancy analysis, the conclusion that landscape metrics were significantly correlated to NPS pollution indices was obtained. Specifically, the composition of LULC (land use/land cover) was the most effective factor to estimate NPS pollution. Dry cultivated land was identified as the main source of NPS pollution, and paddy fields were characterized with the most intensive soluble nutrients loss. In addition, the reason that fragmented and complex landscape patterns exacerbate NPS pollution was that natural landscape composed most of this area. Moreover, the fragmented natural landscape indicated intensive agricultural activities that were the crucial trigger for NPS pollution. Combined with the economic condition in China, Conversion of Cropland to Forests Program (CCFP) should be conducted selectively and gradually in the DJKR basin. 相似文献

Abstract: Bioretention as sustainable urban stormwater management has gathered much recent attention, and implementation is expanding in mesic locations that receive more than 1,000 mm of annual precipitation. The arid southwestern United States is the fastest growing and most urbanized region in the country. Consequently, there is a need to establish design recommendations for bioretention to control stormwater from expanding urban development in this ecologically sensitive region. Therefore, we review the ecological limits and opportunities for designing bioretention in arid and semiarid regions. We incorporated USEPA Stormwater Management Model (SWMM) simulations to synthesize ecologically based design recommendations for bioretention in arid climates. From our review, an ideal bioretention garden area should be 6 to 8% of the contributing impervious drainage area (depending on region) with two layers of media, a 0.5‐m low‐nutrient topsoil layer above a 0.6‐m porous media layer that acts as temporary storage during a storm event. When planted with the suggested vegetation, this design maximizes stormwater treatment by promoting ecological treatment in the topsoil while promoting infiltration and evapotranspiration of stormwater by deep‐rooted shrubs that require no irrigation after establishment. This synthesis improves water resources management in arid and semiarid regions by introducing a sustainable bioretention design that protects local surface waters while reducing regional water demands for irrigation. 相似文献

A systematic approach for the comparative assessment of stormwater pollutant removal potentials 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper describes the development of a methodology to theoretically assess the stormwater pollutant removal performances of structural best management practices (BMPs). The method combines the categorisation of the relative importance of the primary removal processes within 15 different BMPs with an evaluation of the ability of each process to remove a pollutant in order to generate a value representing the pollutant removal potential for each BMP. The methodology is demonstrated by applying it separately to a set of general water quality indicators (total suspended solids, biochemical and chemical oxygen demand, nitrates, phosphates and faecal coliforms) to produce a ranked list of BMP pollutant removal efficiencies. Given the limited amount of available monitoring data relating to the differential pollutant removal capabilities of BMPs, the resulting prioritization will support stakeholders in making urban drainage decisions from the perspective of pollutant removal. It can also provide inputs to existing urban hydrology models, which aim to predict the treatment performances of BMPs. The level of resilience of the proposed approach is tested using a sensitivity analysis and the limitations in terms of BMP design and application are discussed. 相似文献

There are relatively few Federal environmental regulations that influence agricultural production in the US. However, many local and state environmental rules may influence the management practices on US farms as might interactions between urban population centers and agricultural producers. Detailed analysis of corn farms gives insight into these relationships and suggests that stringent environmental regulations could increase the likelihood of adoption of certain conservation practices, all else being constant, but that the interaction between urban populations has less of an effect on the adoption decisions. 相似文献

Australian reporting requirements for native vegetation require improved spatial and temporal information on the anthropogenic
effects on vegetation. This includes better linkage of information on vegetation type (e.g., native vegetation association),
extent and change, vegetation condition, or modification. The Vegetation Assets, States and Transitions (VAST) framework is
presented as a means for ordering vegetation by degree of anthropogenic modification as a series of condition states, from
a residual or base-line condition through to total removal. The VAST framework facilitates mapping and accounting for change
and trends in the status and condition of vegetation. The framework makes clear the links between land management and vegetation
condition states, provides a mechanism for describing the consequences of land management practices on vegetation condition,
and contributes to an understanding of resilience. VAST is a simple communication and reporting tool designed to assist in
describing and accounting for anthropogenic modification of vegetation. A benchmark is identified for each vegetation association.
Benchmarks are based on structure, composition, and current regenerative capacity. This article describes the application
of the VAST framework as a consistent national framework to translate and compile existing mapped information on the modification
of native vegetation. We discuss the correspondence between these compiled VAST datasets at national and regional scales and

States, territories, and tribes identify nonpoint source pollution as responsible for more than half of the Nation’s existing
and threatened water quality impairments, making it the principal remaining cause of water quality problems across the United
States. Combinations of education, technical and financial assistance, and regulatory measures are used to inform landowners
about nonpoint source pollution issues, and to stimulate the use of best management practices. A mail survey of non-commercial
riparian landowners investigated how they learn about best management practices, the efficacy of different educational techniques,
and what motivates them to implement land management activities. Landowners experience a variety of educational techniques,
and rank those that include direct personal contact as more effective than brochures, advertisements, radio, internet, or
television. The most important motivations for implementing best management practices were linked with elements of a personal
stewardship ethic, accountability, personal commitment, and feasibility. Nonpoint source education and social marketing campaigns
should include direct interpersonal contacts, and appeal to landowner motivations of caring, responsibility, and personal
