BENEFITS FROM MANAGING FARM PRODUCED NUTRIENTS1

Manures and fertilizers are applied to agricultural lands in excess of recommended amounts, resulting in widespread pollution of surface and ground water and contributing a substantial source of greenhouse gases associated with global warming. By developing policies that exploit the value of farm produced nutrients, input costs can be minimized. Better accounting for or crediting of farm produced nutrients is leading to economically beneficial conservation of fertilizer. In addition, hog producers who own enough land may benefit from properly managing manure nutrients. Poultry litter is valuable as fertilizer and can be marketed by independent dealers to farmers in nutrient deficit areas, with very modest assistance from the government. Dairy producers may modify their past income support programs to finance central compost facilities. Although nutrient problems were neglected in the past, recent Federal initiatives and joint initiatives with states exploit many of these and other opportunities to avoid excessive application of nutrients to the land.

Measurements of selected PCBs in open urban ambient air of Madrid (Spain)

The focus of this study was to characterize the concentration levels of selected PCBs and compare them to compiled data in order to contribute to the international database. The sampling site is located in the outskirts of Madrid and can be considered an open urban area. 32 samples of air were taken from February 1998 to June 1998 by using a high volume air sampler. Glass fiber filters and polyurethane foam (PUF) were used to collect the paniculate and gas phase material, respectively. PUF plugs were Soxhlet extracted and filters were ultrasonically extracted by using pesticide-grade hexane and dichloromethane, respectively. The cleanup procedure was carried out on a florisil column with hexane and hexane/dichloromethane as elution solvents. GC/MS in a selected ion monitoring mode was used for quantification and 29 selected PCBs congeners were analyzed.     

我国目前的环境监测站标准化建设

阐述了我国环境监测站的建设与发展过程,以及环境监测站标准化建设的意义和作用,介绍了江苏省在环境监测站标准化建设方面采取的措施和取得的成效。指出目前在环境监测站标准化建设中存在认识不到位、措施不力,投入、不足、缺乏保障,发展不平衡等问题。提出应加强领导,科学规划,拓展融资渠道,加快环境监测站标准化建设步伐。     

处理乙硫醇废气生物滤池中微生物的初步鉴定

生物滤池是废气生物处理的主要技术之一 ,其生物相包括细菌和真菌 .对于疏水性有机物质 ,真菌具有更高的处理效率 ,而且真菌对环境的适应性也比细菌强 .本研究采用生物滤池处理含乙硫醇废气 ,通过对生物滤池填料上附着的微生物进行分离鉴定表明 ,初步判定分离出的菌株分别为常现青霉、宛氏拟青霉、文氏曲霉和顶孢头孢霉 .
