The lack of knowledge regarding social diversity in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) or an in-depth understanding of the
ways people living there interact to address common problems is concerning, perhaps even dangerous, given that community action
is necessary for successful wildland fire preparedness and natural resource management activities. In this article, we lay
out the knowledge and preliminary case study evidence needed to begin systematically documenting the differing levels and
types of adaptive capacity WUI communities have for addressing collective problems such as wildland fire hazard. In order
to achieve this end, we draw from two theoretical perspectives encompassing humans' interactions with their environment, including
(1) Kenneth Wilkinson's interactional approach to community, (2) and certain elements of place literature. We also present
case study research on wildfire protection planning in two drastically different California communities to illustrate how
social diversity influences adaptive capacity to deal with hazards such as wildland fire. These perspectives promote an image
of the WUI not as a monolithic entity but a complex mosaic of communities with different needs and existing capacities for

Zn-air batteries (ZABs), especially the secondary batteries, have engrossed a great interest because of its high specific energy, economical and high safety. However, due to the insufficient activity and stability of bifunctional electrocatalysts for air-cathode oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) processes, the practical application of rechargeable ZABs is seriously hindered. In the effort of developing high active, stable and cost-effective electrocatalysts, transition metal nitrides (TMNs) have been regarded as the candidates due to their high conductivity, strong corrosion-resistance, and bifunctional catalytic performance. In this paper, the research progress in TMNs-based material as ORR and OER electrocatalysts for ZABs is discussed with respect to their synthesis, chemical/physical characterization, and performance validation/optimization. The surface/interface nanoengineering strategies such as defect engineering, support binding, heteroatom introduction, crystal plane orientation, interface construction and small size effect, the physical and chemical properties of TMNs-based electrocatalysts are emphasized with respect to their structures/morphologies, composition, electrical conductivity, specific surface area, chemical stability and corrosion resistance. The challenges of TMNs-based materials as bifunctional air-cathode electrocatalysts in practical application are evaluated, and numerous research guidelines to solve these problems are put forward for facilitating further research and development. 相似文献

INTRODUCTION: Alertness of individuals operating vehicles, aircrafts, and machinery is a pre-requisite for safety of the individual and for avoiding economic losses. In this paper, we present a new technique for determining the alertness level of the operator and elaborate the methodology for the specific case of highway driving METHOD: Our hypothesis is that the time derivative of force exerted by the driver at the vehicle-human interfaces can be used to construct a signature of individual driving styles and to discern different levels of alertness RESULTS: In this study, we present experimental results corroborating this hypothesis and introduce a parameter, 'spikiness index,' for the time series data of the force derivative to quantify driver alertness IMPACT ON INDUSTRY: The low cost, ruggedness, and low-volume data processing requirements of the proposed technique give it a competitive edge over existing predominantly image processing based vigilance monitoring systems. 相似文献

一种新型高铺展性水成膜泡沫的性质以及灭火性能研究 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
介绍了一种自制的多组分水成膜泡沫溶液,并对该泡沫溶液的各种性能(表面张力,铺展性,灭火性能等)进行了表征,同时与传统的水成膜泡沫进行了对比.试验结果表明,该泡沫溶液的表面张力和界面张力很低.极低的表面和界面张力导致该泡沫在液体燃料表面具有很强的铺展性,能在极短的时间内在燃料表面铺展成一层液膜,使燃料表面迅速隔氧降温,从而达到迅速灭火的作用.在通过压缩空气泡沫系统进行灭火的试验中,不论泡沫浓度处于3%或6%,在液体流量较大的情况下,该泡沫对标准柴油火的熄灭时间都在3秒之内.另外,泡沫溶液的铺展性和所形成的泡沫的灭火性能的试验结果表明水成膜泡沫的灭火速率主要是由其在燃料表面形成水膜的速率决定,而形成水膜的速率主要是由泡沫溶液的铺展速率、即铺展性决定的. 相似文献

Drawing on the “evidence‐based” (Sutherland et al. 2013) versus “evidence‐informed” debate (Adams & Sandbrook 2013), which has become prominent in conservation science, I argue that science can be influential if it holds a dual reference (Lentsch & Weingart 2011) that contributes to the needs of policy makers whilst maintaining technical rigor. In line with such a strategy, conservation scientists are increasingly recognizing the usefulness of constructing narratives through which to enhance the influence of their evidence (Leslie et al. 2013; Lawton & Rudd 2014). Yet telling stories alone is rarely enough to influence policy; instead, these narratives must be policy relevant. To ensure that evidence is persuasive alongside other factors in a complex policy‐making process, conservation scientists could follow 2 steps: reframe within salient political contexts and engage more productively in boundary work, which is defined as the ways in which scientists “construct, negotiate, and defend the boundary between science and policy” (Owens et al. 2006:640). This paper responds to an original research article by Gemma Dunn and Matthew Laing in volume 76 of this journal. Their article describes an empirical study on the demand-side of the science-policy interface, and proposes a new framework by which to evaluate and/or design effective knowledge systems for influencing policymaking. In doing so, they also critique the commonly used CRELE framework, and propose that their alternative ACTA framework better summarises the most important aspects of scientific research for influencing decision-making. In response, this paper highlights some ambiguities commonly arising from the use of CRELE, to which Dunn and Laing have also succumbed, alongside ambiguities within CRELE itself, which they have failed to address. These difficulties highlight how empirical evidence of the sort collected by Dunn and Laing should not alone determine the worth of any knowledge-systems framework. This paper then discusses the dangers arising from a framework such as ACTA, were it to be used instead, and concludes that although CRELE is flawed, it does at least point to appropriate priorities for the use of evidence in public decision-making. 相似文献

以乌梁素海和岱海为研究对象,采用柱状芯样模拟法,开展了2个湖泊水-沉积物界DIC和DOC交换通量及耦合关系研究.结果表明,在夏季90 d的时间内,乌梁素海明水区沉积物表现为上覆水中DIC和DOC的碳源,DIC和DOC的平均释放速率分别为71.07 mmol·(m2·d)-1和185.09 mmol·(m2·d)-1;岱海浅、深水区沉积物整体上表现为上覆水中DIC和DOC的碳汇,浅水区DIC和DOC的平均释放速率分别为155.75 mmol·(m2·d)-1和-1 478.08 mmol·(m2·d)-1,深水区DIC和DOC的平均释放速率分别为-486.53 mmol·(m2·d)-1和-1 274.02 mmol·(m2·d)-1;岱海浅水区和乌梁素海水-沉积物界面DIC与DOC耦合作用(含量、释放速率、总量变化量的同步变化)主要受微生物摄取、微生物或非生物降解及水生植物的影响;岱海深水区水-沉积物界面DIC与DOC耦合作用则主要与Ca CO3共沉淀作用及沉积物中无机碳形态分布特征等有关.总体上,不同类型湖泊或同一湖泊不同湖区的DIC或DOC源/汇功能差异是湖泊类型、离岸距离、湖泊水文地球化学及无机碳形态分布等多种因素综合作用的结果. 相似文献
